Writers' Workshop General Chat Thread

I am writing something I did consider setting at Christmas-tide, but given that there was no way I could finish it before the 25th I decided against it. If I wanted any certainty of finishing a special in time I think I'd probably need to start in October

If I recall, I started last year's Christmas chapter that I wrote in late November, hoping to have it out by December 22nd. Even working on it several hours a day on my free days, I couldn't get it done in time, and even then I wasn't particularly proud of the finished product. So yes, definitely start a special project very early if you have a strict deadline you want to meet if you can.

I've never considered holiday specials for my fics outside of, like, birthdays... but now, having been thinking of Love and Other Nightmares today and yesterday, I kind of want to write a one-shot of Annie and her family celebrating together. My writing speed and stamina's better, but not quite there yet to get it done and polished by the holiday itself, heh. But! There is New Year's... Hmm...

I had planned a Christmas chapter for Orre: The Desert but due to me falling behind on chapters and just getting busy due to schoolwork, other things like holidays and sheer laziness on my part I don't really think I will do it.

I had sorta planned it to introduce the Pokemon HQ Lab properly with a Christmas party for the lab workers and friends instead of through mentions with Tomoko(my main character Cecilia's roommate from Johto who works there) and slightly tease what's upcoming with those characters and the lab's current projects. The idea would of also brought out more of Cecilia's and Tomoko's family backgrounds since I haven't mention much of them and could use it to give reason why Tomoko, a Johtonese woman, is in Orre of all places when there are other places she could of gone that's way better.

Well, gotta go back to the drawing board for that then.

I got a Maractus in a random battle on Pokémon Showdown, so I felt inspired to write a oneshot about one. Problem is, I can't think of a plot. How can I make a desert interesting? Should I make it part of A New Place, A New Attitude, or should I just have it only be about Pokémon so I have an excuse to post something on FictionPad?

Then again, my whim oneshots never go very far. I remember when I wanted to write a story about a Gible, but couldn't think of anything that wasn't connected to the Newverse.

Why don’t you try a Far West approach? Thatbis a style that is rarely approached through a Pokémon POV. Maybe you could have a Maractus with Bullet Seed / Pin Missile as a bandit who is fleeing from the sheriff or as a sheriff who is challenging some bandit.

I probably wouldn't write that, but as I read your comment, the Hidden Village music from Twilight Princess came into my head.

EDIT: After giving it some thought, I could finally start writing that 'verse where Pokémon have recently started talking.

EDIT: I need some ideas, though. I really like the idea of seemingly-unscrupulous bandits with a heart of gold, but I don't know whose side Maractus should be on. Also, my sources of inspiration for a desert setting include Eldin Province from Twilight Princess, the Scorpion Den from Wings of Fire (seriously, I love it when they show us settlements in that series), and Ever Oasis.

Nice cosy morning with Partner and then we had a grand lunch and some socialisation & drinks at my parents' place with a bunch of guests. Aaaaand we're both ill now! Oof! Merry everything, all!

Merry (belated) Christmas! Hope it was a good one for you guys! Got to spend mine at my new house... Since we don't have a proper kitchen table or anything yet, we improvised successfully with a plastic fold-up table we were using as a computer desk until we got proper desks, lol. We had a mini-Christmas tree up, played cards, shared presents, had a good ham we got for free from work with enough leftovers to last weeks, holy shit. As for cool presents... Tsubasa manga volumes 5-8, an Ace Attorney mug, Dunkin' Donuts gift card, and a new car adapter to play my music from my car (which I'm addicted to doing, forget the radio).

@unrepentantAuthor Feel better ahhhh. 'Tis that season, I guess...

@swiftfox Hopefully you got to have some time to celebrate! :c The only time I ever worked Christmas, it was an overnight shift, so I had the rest of the day to visit family. They had to beg me to do it and I would've said no if it wasn't for it being overnight.

I burned myself out on writing after I stayed up until 11PM on Christmas Eve finishing off a oneshot. I want to write other stuff, like a oneshot in the world where Pokémon can talk to humans, but equality hasn't quite been reached yet, or another oneshot for A New Place, A New Attitude, but I've lost that spark of inspiration.

I'd probably be getting pumped about writing right this second if I weren't still unwell. Two weeks of illness tomorrow! As it is, I'm not really the sort who can be creative while ill. It saps my energy and motivation, you know? Still, having the best time I can manage. :3
