Writers' Workshop General Chat Thread

I've honestly never even written real romance before. I'm planning on doing some in the future, but I have no idea how far I'll go. Sorry Flaze, I think you might be alone xP

Hate to throw you guys off of your "interesting" topic haha, but I have a quick question.

How do you guys go about writing an outline for your story, if you do. I am going to have about 7 hours of uninterrupted writing tomorrow(besides about 45mins for lunch) and I want to get some serious writing done.

I have an idea for a fic in my head and wanna start writing, but without a decent outline, my writing is just smudges on paper. Any suggestions?

I just scribble ideas down and start going from there. I usually plan my stories months in advance before I write them so I can flesh them out, I don't really get an idea and write it the next day - I would never be able to operate that way.

And for future reference, that question is better served in the General Writing Questions thread ;)

And yes @Flaze, that generally is just porn - probably a bit of people Mary Sue-ing to live out their fantasies :p

Ive had the idea for awhile its just im gonna have a long time to write tomorrow and want to pump out a rough draft. By no means is it the finished product :p

And i found the rigt thread after posting this, but couldnt figure out how to delete the post in this thread. (Im on tapatalk)

For outlines, I usually do what I did for essays in high school. I come up with an intro, figure out a few major events that'd be interesting, and come up with about half a dozen alternate endings, then brainstorm further middle ideas based on the endings I've thought of. Then after that, it's polishing the details as I try to decide which ending to go with.

Smut writing? I've never done it before, as it doesn't really interest me, but having seen the number of views on that... Though I think as I progress through Let the World Fear Us, I'll eventually have to have some sort of smut in there, though I hope I'll be able to only imply it happening "off camera".

Edit: Oh, since I posted a new chapter for a story that's in the awards, is that new chapter eligible for judging? I'm thinking no, as it'd probably upset whoever may have judged it already, but I'm curious.

No, new chapters posted after the self nomination period closed are counted in the Awards, so anything posted after the 9th NZ Time is not meant to be read.

Well, if we're talking the difference between porn and ... what would be the phrase? Sex with plot? I don't know. Anyway. Porn doesn't look too difficult to write - I bet I could rack up a few thousand views to a story of a few thousand words if I wanted to. Outside of that, I would not dare try and write a sex scene though.

As to drafting and planning (Using The Long Walk as an example), I have two stages. The general outline of where the story will go is already written and hangs out in a master plot document. I've given major events names like episode titles as handy shorthand. The outline gets fiddled with constantly. The second stage is outlining each chapter before I write. I do this on paper (I find it easier to get ideas down that way), and that involves a more detailed outline of the structure of the chapter. It also tends to be where I do my "thinking aloud" when it comes to figuring out themes and character arcs

Very well, I wasn't expecting it to be counted but I was still curious. Better luck next year, eh?

Aren't you guys almost halfway through it?
We're almost halfway through the first "series", yes, but perhaps series is a bad way to describe how we're segmenting the story. When we originally came up with the concepts behind Storm Island, we wanted it to be like the anime, in that Andrea's time on Storm Island was to be divided up into four "seasons". By breaking it up in this fashion, it seems like it'd be easier as a reader to digest, rather than stare at a list of 100+ chapters. That, and it allows us to focus on subplots with more depth, giving us ample time to develop and execute them without stretching them too thin.

Getting all the way to the final chapter of "season 4" is going to take years, and I'm thinking we might not even make it. But if we do, I'll feel accomplished on a personal level, even if we never receive any sort of professional recognition for it.

I know how you guys feel. Working on fics as a series can be a quite troublesome sometimes because of everything you want to do but well...life kind of gets in the way. I have the same problem with my own Academy series of sorts and it's taken me two years just on the second instalment.

Your updates have become more frequent as of late at least, but I can understand what you're going through since managing a fic and real life can be tough to handle.

I would say to continue trying. I have been writing Galactic since 2010, I am probably not even halfway through now (its Sinnoh and we are currently at the Valor Lakefront, which leaves Pastoria, Canalave, Iron Island, Snowpoint and a lot of other stuff to wade through), but I am going to keep writing it even if it means I don't post the final chapter until 2020 (though I would obvs. much prefer to have it done before then...) I think it is worth trying to get through it, and if you feel like you don't want to keep writing then don't, but if you want to see the story finished I think it is worth trying. Hey, if you finish it you could always rework it as non-Pokemon and submit it to a publisher?

On sort of similar note. Speaking of fics idea you might want to work on, I actually kind of have felt inclined to revisit my old Gemini idea, which died almost a year ago sadly xD the idea is still sticking to me and honestly I never wanted it to die, it's just life got really in the way and I couldn't afford to keep writing it as often. Unfortunately it doesn't help that I have a lot of idea on my mind that I want to write down -w- it's frustrating.

I remember reading the first chapter I think, I thought it was an interesting concept, it may very well be worth relooking at. However, I would warn that I find trying to balance multiple fics at once a horror, and would not recommend anyone try and handle more than two at once.

By the way all, Scholar's 'Tower Academy' is still the fic in the Review Game (the previous person only posted a sentence response), so if people would like to read it and post a review then please do so, and remember you get one in return! It has been nearly a month now so I am sure Scholar would appreciate it, and I am sure lots of people are looking for that little bit extra feedback.

And I've had plenty of recent reviews for The Long Walk. Though, with any luck I'll have Chapter Eight ready for publishing by the end of the week!

You are literally the only author I've ever seen claim to have "plenty of reviews"
