Writers' Workshop General Chat Thread

Welcome back, @Lord Kyuubi!

I have a question for all you people! What's your favorite pokedex-related project? I've seen a lot of them where people like to write a drabble for each pokedex entry, or expanded pokedex entries. And just yesterday I saw a project where someone's trying to explain the anatomy of each pokemon in the most realistic way possible.

Mm, I have the first chapter or two of one of those sitting on my Google Drive right now, actually. Should get around to posting it. The concept certainly holds some strange allure, but it can be really boring if done lazily (which is an easy trap to fall into). Mine is based around a Steve Irwin-type character who's trying to film a series of nature documentaries but keeps accidentally putting himself in mortal danger.

I did have that blog-based pokémon taxonomy series at one point. It was kind of fun - albeit hyper-specialised and of interest to almost no one - especially to poke holes in some of the more ridiculous fanon. Sorry guys, there's next to nothing of the vampire squid in Malamar

Mine was just "here's a Pokémon, here's some details and a couple of bits of sarcastic commentary".

I love to write wikipedia styled articles if the narrative calls for it, but I usually just drop a sentence or two when it comes to entries. I strive to come up with original descriptions though, rather than copy one from the pokedex section of a particular species' article on Bulbapedia. I've seen that a little too much.

Wow, The Wordsmith actually reviewed things and seemed to care about this place. What happened to make him fly off the handle? A shame to lose someone who actually reviews :/

EDIT: Ah, nevermind. Seems like the Wordsmith who spoke broken English and legitimately cared and the Wordsmith who seemed to worship Blackjack and call this place shit were like two personalities. Bizarre.

Like I said, I've had someone I know hijack an account and say stupid stuff before. That why I suggested investigating to the best of our abilities. Still, what's done is done, I'm not going to dispute it.

The Anime canon made the Hydreigon species into a less-dangerous less-aggressive less-terrifying more-cutey more-caring more-obedient pokemon. But I portray and describe it being the most dangerous species one may find in the wild. Though luckily there isn't a lot in number and they live in limited locations, so there isn't much hazards unless one dare to enter their habitats.

Well in fact, I think the Anime canon turn a LOT of pokemon species into their 180 degree opposite of their in-game Pokedex entries. I doubt their portrayal is anymore "correct" than what the fans interpret. Especially not when all the anime staff are hardcore Pokemon fans.

I've been coming round the idea that perhaps the entries should be more in the style of a field guide than an encyclopedia entry, at least in terms of what information is immediately available. Any good article needs to be carefully edited to be useful, something that's doubly true of anything that's intended to be used on the spur of the moment.

Or perhaps - another idea I've been toying with - users can change the information settings to reflect what they're usually interested in. I quite like the idea of a setting that automatically recites Linnaen names rather than common names, like:

Venusaur, Phytodorsum gloriosus, etc

Actually, this could be an amusing little plot in my case. The characters are getting a detailed rundown of a dangerous Pokemon through the R-Kit, only for them to be attacked with some dangerous ability that the article hasn't gotten to yet because it's so wordy and thorough, thus resulting in a sternly worded complaint to the manufacturer.

Just a thought.

If the Anime or Game pokedex becomes so technically detailed like Wikipedia or any encyclopedia, the number of pokemon trainers in the world shall then dropped severely, also Trainer Schools will than have drop rate of 99%. Because only the brightest kids with Einstein equivalent IQ can memorize all of them.
