Writers' Workshop General Chat Thread

i used to be into fim but i kind of got bored if it around season 7. now season 8 is going (or ended already, not sure) and i haven't caught up to probably the last 10 episodes? don't know if i will. it's just that the corniness (more like UNIcorniness hahaha!!!) of varying degrees kind of got to be too much and i wasn't involved in the community anymore, so i didn't feel obligated/motivated to keep up.

i know a reboot is in the making and this gen is ending after season 9, though, so i'll likely check that out. what i always liked about fim were the designs and fantastical concepts.

There was one episode that I mostly liked, but the way they explained the moral at the end sounded way more babyish than anything else that season. I've always been a casual fan, mainly because I got into it through reviews, so I find it hard to form my own opinions. (Also, Fimfiction is the best-looking fanfiction website.)

Back in the early days, I was one of those people who hated seeing it everywhere, but I didn't like people who attacked fans either.

I didn't fancy getting into FIM in the first place because I'm so very much not the target audience. These days I'm very wary of the adult fanbase. I don't think I'll be going anywhere near the franchise tbh.

Things are okay here. Work has picked up in intensity in the last few weeks, and I'm burning out. I'm looking for jobs, but it's not simple or fun.

In better news, our new bearded dragon is arriving tomorrow! Very excited.

Very nice, Beth. I've got a week off in March to have @TheLlama visit.

So, the news about this here cat is twofold.

The first bit of news is that I've injured myself and have a tiny glass fragment stuck inside a deep cut on my thumb. The sizeable dressing for the wound is a huge inconvenience.

However, we do now have the bearded dragon, Mango, and he's a sweetheart! The cat did his business on the chopping board in protest. The complaint was noted. We will not be removing the dragon. :p

Oh jeez! That can't be good! I hope your thumb feels better! Can you get the glass fragment out somehow?

Nice to know you got a bearded dragon! I have to admit, I LOL'ed at your cat's reaction. I can totally see a cat doing that.

Thanks, @Juliko. Some fragments were removed with a syringe of water and a needle poking around in the wound, but a subsequent xray revealed a sliver that's too deep. The dressing supposedly will draw it out over time, but this involves going without stitches and going on a course of clarithromycin. With luck this will be over by March.

The cat will get over it. I'll bribe him with food to accept his new family member!

My previous three cats were all different personalities, and two of them were chill enough never to mess with humans in this way. The third was a vicious little tortoiseshell girl who protested this way whether she had been wronged or not. I'm used to this by now!

This one is named Spencer, and he's a 7yo grey tabby. His chief personality traits are gluttony and stupidity. He is terrified of everything unfamiliar (and vacuum cleaners, plastic bags, etc) unless motivated by food, like some sort of feline Scooby Doo. He is, however, extremely affectionate and trusting. He is content to lay in whatever position you put him in for hours at a time, rumbling away, and will give little kisses and headbutts to demonstrate his love. He is also the reason for my recent injury, albeit indirectly and in joint responsibility with my own insensible lack of precautions when dealing with the broken bulb he caused. I love the little terror.

Holy heck'n darn, ouch! Get better soon, we need more cat protest stories! And bearded dragons are super cool!

runs to fridge, stops to think

HOW ARE YOU TYPING?

Oh, and on the subject of cat stories; the little kitty on my lap in my avatar is Damian. She was the best cat, ever. Never grew out of being a frisky cuddly kitten that doesn't poop on cutting boards or even beg for food, though she did learn how to open the bathroom door (HEY YOU JUST TAKE A SHOWER, WHAT'S THAT SWINGING THING BETWEEN YOUR LEGS, IS IT STRING? NO COME BACK). She's still alive, but family had to give her to a shelter when we moved to an apartment. Shelter sent us a notice that she was adopted within a week. She always loved everybody.

Fun fact: when we first got her, we were told she was a boy. "His" name was Duke. No, we did not choose the name. And then, there were complications.

@Snuggle Tier List - I only need my fingers to type! In fact, I don't touch type, not that I'm aware of touch typing requiring much use of the thumb. I tend to type mostly with my index fingers and occasionally my other fingers for specific keys (such as left ring for "a"). I manage about 65wpm or so.

Partner had a similar story to yours! Her previous bearded dragon was supposedly a male, and then produced a bunch of eggs quite unexpectedly! The dragon got renamed on everything but vet records.

As some of you might know, I've been going through some pretty miserable headaches for the past couple months, and I've tried multiple things to try and resolve them. My back and shoulders have also been feeling tense, so I had my dad and brother check it out. They found some pretty big knots there, and I think they may ultimately be the source of my trouble. They loosened them up some, but they aren't entirely gone yet. Still, after that one session my sinuses cleared up a little, and my headaches were somewhat relieved. I can't say for sure if it is the only cause of the headaches, but I hope it is so I can get back on my feet.

Good luck, @lucarioknight56. Lasting health conditions are an absolute drain on a person's wellbeing. I hope it clears up for you, sharpish.

It seems quite a few people are under the weather at the moment. While everyone has different things that work best for them when they feel like garbage, I usually like a shower, a snack, and some good music if all I can manage is an ounce of self care. Look after yourselves, everyone.

All I have to do is wait out my healing period and try not to flex my right hand all that much. Ack!

Hope you feel better soon, @lucarioknight56!

Reminds me that I'd like to go again for a massage soon. I treated one to myself for my birthday a couple years back, and that's coming up soon-ish. Don't you all agree those reoccur way too often? Geez, go away already! I guess it was just kind of awkward that they found big knots on my back, too, and they couldn't apply much pressure without it hurting me. But I did feel much better afterward.

Not much to report here personally, I guess. I went to a casino the other week and played Blackjack for the first time, somehow won money not knowing what I was doing. Discovered a new found love for Super Smash Bros thanks to Ultimate. Middle-of-the-night existential crises. Lots of chocolate. The usual.

@diamondpearl876 Blackjack variants are the fairest games at casinos for competitors. I still don't recommend developing a habit, though!

I would love to play some Smash Ultimate with ya but I don't have the console, ha.

Take care, mate. Try and look after that back of yours.

Heh, I'm pretty terrible at Smash, anyway. xD I don't really have a "main" yet or anything because I'm not particularly good with anybody, but I do like playing Meta Knight, Ike, and Pikachu the most.

I don't main anybody as such because I like variety, but I'll default to Lucario. I'm also fond of Snake, Mewtwo, Meta Knight, Cpt Falcon, Greninja, and others.

Since I'm not likely to own a Switch any time soon I've not paid any mind to new fighters available in Ultimate or anything like that, though.

Cat update: the bearded dragon is named Mango and has settled in nicely. He seems calcium deficient though, so we're looking into treatment for that. Spencer is still jealous, but he's behaving.

My thumb still looks nasty and has a tiny glass sliver inside it but it could be worse. The medics reckon it'll heal fine given time. The dressing is causing my hand to ache over time though.

The weather is gorgeous this week, which I'm especially glad of as work is tough and the boiler broke again the other night. Imagine washing yourself with one hand in a freezing shower cubicle out of a plastic bucket filled with hit water from the kettle. Oof. Not a good morning.

Today is off to a better start! Slept better last night and didn't miss my normal bus. Plus Partner and I did a little bit of reading before I left. Hope everyone else has a decent day too~

Ohhh, Captain Falcon’s another good one. I tend to forget about characters that don’t belong to fandoms I like lol. The exceptions are Ike and Pit because I read SSB fanfiction shipping them and I’ve been sold ever since. Somehow. :V

Hope the calcium issue turns out well. It’s better to notice sooner rather than later. Bearded dragons might be different, but my leopard gecko’s own deficiency kept him at a super low weight for a while, and he needed weekly checkups and, at his worst, forcefeeding. Now he’s super chunky. :3

For tomorrow I just hope to write fanfic for the first time in a few days. I’ve been good at doing it consistently and it’d be a shame to stop now, even though a school paper obviously had to take priority last week. I finished an organizing project that took over a month, finally, so that frees up some space to fill in, at least. ’ll have to manage upkeep but sifting through all previously read material was really the most time consuming thing. Essentially I started my own research database/filing system to store specific information from all the books and journal articles I read so things can be retrieved later easily when I’m doing literature reviews or whatever other publications. Should save time down the road and it’s probably the most organized I’ve ever been before writing-wise.
