So you have a Normal type right? Since it's immune to ghost moves it'll be perfect-- Personally I think the ideal moveset is something like Tackle, Quick Attack, Headbutt, and Scratch.

You're holding the wrong part of the Leaf Stone, probably. You have to hold it by the end with stem pattern, otherwise you block the flow of the evolution energy.
