There is no "Hoenn hype." The anime is featuring Pokemon in the Kalos Dex (especially the coastal variant), regardless of which generation/region they originated.

The wreath was also carried by a Starly.

Ash and the others were reeling in many non-Hoenn Pokemon: Alomomola, Staryu, Tentacool, and Magikarp.
