The Kahunas seem to be heavily tied to Alola's lore, which is more than you can say for any gym leader. We need to see the island challenges in action before we can judge them, let alone their potential to lead to different themes in later generations. You're being hasty. Then what would be the point of changing it if the dynamic (visit cities and towns, battle with the respective element specialist, collect some token of mastery), is the same? It would be "Showcases are glorified Contest appeals" all over again, albeit with Gyms.
You may call them "glorified gyms", but they still aren't gyms.
The anime writers have nothing to do with the decision to drop gyms from Sun and Moon, so your point is moot. Deal with it.I mean, it isn't like the show hasn't deviated away from the traditional Gym route. That was one of the reasons why we had the Orange League and Battle Frontier, a part from filling up time until the next generation debut. But they were never permanent and I don't expect Alola's variation to be either.
