...Am I in denial for expecting Ash to not win this one, only to prepare for an amazing, satisfactory arc with all rounds shown and an awesome closure for the next League?

I had no problem with Ash losing in the past so I don't see the big deal. If he wins then that is okay but if not then it is no big loss in my opinion.

I really hope Ash wins the league. It's been hell for me and us for 19 years. Who's to say I won't live to make it for another 3 years till the next conference.?
Who even knows if there's gonna BE a next conference. Alola might not even have a regional conference.

True, but the region(s) after are bound to. The Kalos League will not be the last Pokemon League.
That really depends on if the Gymless style of Gameplay proves to be popular or not in S\M.

But the Gymless style of gameplay seems to be highly native to Alola. I wouldn't imagine other regions, especially designed after other real world counterparts, having Hawaiin themed Kahunas and island challenges.

And secondly, GF/writers disregard popular game play elements all the time. Otherwise, every game play mechanic introduced in a region would appear in subsequent games (seasons, walking Pokemon, etc) and relatively popular side quests like contests would continue to appear in every anime saga.

The anticipation is so very real. With SM most likely not having gyms in the traditional sense, the least they can do is throw Ash a bone before we get the Hawaiian repaint.

I mean that each region might have it's own equivalent to the gym system but not a traditional one in the sense that error familiar with. Also I think they learned their lesson with CC after the backslash that they got.

No, but they could easily have a similar challenge quest that doesn't involve merely going from gym to gym.

Then what would be the point of changing it if the dynamic (visit cities and towns, battle with the respective element specialist, collect some token of mastery), is the same? It would be "Showcases are glorified Contest appeals" all over again, albeit with Gyms.

I mean, it isn't like the show hasn't deviated away from the traditional Gym route. That was one of the reasons why we had the Orange League and Battle Frontier, a part from filling up time until the next generation debut. But they were never permanent and I don't expect Alola's variation to be either.

In the old days of the anime, Pokémon Gyms were not as dedicated back then. It was merely a backdrop to the real reason why people see the show: The Pokémon themselves. Who could forget the abnormally large gap between Koga and Blaine? Really, when one thinks about it, the only reason why it felt like the anime was sticking close the traditional Gym route was because the games were doing the same. The games were the ones that had the standardized battles and the Pokémon the anime has to showcase. It was the reason why anime was stuck in this status quo loop for a long time. When the anime was fresh and doing something different, it was doing something outside of the games like the Orange Islands. And considering that Sun and Moon has you walking around the island doing various quests that aren't simply battling, the anime will have to follow suit if they want to advertise the unique features of Alola.

And Showcases, whether you like them or not, did establish that the writers are capable of making competition that does not involve battling. If they can do that and the Orange Islands, why not Alola's unique route?

Remember, the status quo has been broken many times before.

I think the main reason is that he's so close, and it would be considered 'troll' to make him lose now. It's not really about the fact that he loses I don't think.
And I still don't think either of them will win unfortunately. The last episode with Lysandre foreshadowed and undecided battle and an interuption, but I really do hope that Ash wins.

I don't have a problem with the anime emulating Alola's apparent spin on Gyms (or any other game content for that matter). I just don't think the concept of Gyms in the anime is going to be completely replaced and phased out, like it seems people are implying.

Yes they may not be here for the Alola saga, but I'm sure they'll return in the region(s) after. I doubt Kalos is the last entry of the one franchises' staple elements.
