EVERYONE: Yearly Session Log for The Jeweled Champions (and Friends)

Session 37: The Tower of Undine (part 2)

"This central chamber is bare of furnishings, though the floor bears many cracks and bits of broken mud." Midori reads over dungeon ambiance. "The corbelled arch of the ceiling rises to a height of 20 feet, and a 5-foot wide opening pierces the apex just south of its center. In addition to the rubble, the floor is scattered with other bits of debris ranging from shards of wood and glass to strange bits of metal and pools of foul-smelling substances."

She adds two iron golems to the scene. "There are two iron golems here...and they do not look happy to see you!"

Brock grimaces at the possibility of a long battle. "Is there a way I could somehow use the Swanna Song more than once?"

"If you defeat the golems, you may yet find a way to unleash the Swanna's song more than once." Midori replies. "Christine strikes first for this battle."

"Christine uses Rolling Thunder." Serena reports before finding her dice.

"Machines and golems don't like thunder, so the thunderbolts from your blade manage to strike both golems." Midori reports. "They are paralyzed, and can't move."

This gives Ash an idea. "Just to be sure they're not going anywhere for a while...Aldaron uses Lightning Arrow!"

Cheers and applause fill the theater as an electric explosion fills the screen, revealing the two golems down for the count. "Well, that's one way to get rid of golems very fast..." Misty muses.

Midori just checks the drop list. "Each golem dropped a Rune of the Swanna. This is a rune a minstrel can use--each rune grants one extra use of the Swanna Song per adventure. Be sure and save them for when you really need them!"

Brock nods as he adds the two runes to his inventory. "I promise I will use these in an hour of great need, as only a rare few fiends carry these." he tells Midori in character.

Midori smiles in agreement. "At any rate, your final challenge in this aeon tower is just ahead!"

---------

Awed gasps and chatter fills the theater as Midori's screen displays the final room, and the odd machine inside. "This room near the tower’s pinnacle is pyramidal in shape. Its corbelled walls rise at a steep angle to an apex 50 feet overhead, where a cylindrical shaft rises another 10 feet before opening to the sky at the tower’s point." she explains. "The stuttering light of the tower’s aeon orb swings around the top of the shaft, casting dizzying shadows and occasionally shining its light straight down into the shaft. The 30-foot-square chamber has four alcoves, one in the center of each wall, and the entire room is cluttered with crates bearing a sprawling contraption of glass-and-metal boxes, mirrors, liquid-filled tubes, and copper wiring. The south alcove has a simple hoist with a winch and pulley for hauling items up through a square-cut shaft that descends through the floor. The northern alcove holds a giant piece of rough-cut crystal three feet in diameter. This crystal rests on the floor and glows with an inner fire. Tubes and wiring from the assorted paraphernalia in this room converge on this giant mineral. A low humming pervades the room, originating from the connected apparatuses. Every so often, the swinging light of the orbiting aeon orb shines down through the shaft from above, striking the device, which sparks wildly as it absorbs the light. The crystal’s inner light then perceptibly brightens. Whenever the orb’s light is momentarily absorbed, the orb takes on a dull, grayish cast for a few moments before gradually regaining its former blue sheen."

She addresses the group. "Your challenge is to find a way to break the crystal. If you guys are really stuck, the Swanna Song can also shatter the crystal, and shut down the odd machine, healing the aeon orb of water."

She next tells Ash and the girls "Each of you will get one try to shut down the machine before Brock steps in. In order to shut down the machine, you need to make three successful Disarm checks in a row. Fail even once, and your attempt is over. If all three of you fail your attempt, Brock can step in and use the Swanna Song to break the crystal and shut the machine down."

"That's fair." Brock agrees. "Good luck, everyone!"

"I'll make my attempt first." Misty volunteers.

"Okay--you need at least a 12 for a success." Midori explains. "If even one of your three rolls is below that, your attempt fails, and you can't try again."

"I understand...here goes!" Misty smiles before reaching for her blue d20.

The crowd watches as Misty makes her first roll. When a 19 in a green O appears on the screen, they cheer. The cheers intensify as a 14 in a green O appears for Misty's second roll, and the entire theater and the online chat explodes in cheers as an 18 in a green O appears, followed by a victorious fanfare!

Even Brock is impressed by Misty's stroke of luck. "Well! You didn't even need my song this time!"

"Aw, it was just the dice being nice." Misty smiles, pleased at her poetic license.

Midori giggles at Misty's quip. "At any rate, the odd machine is destroyed, and washed away in ethereal water, granting you all the light of Undine, the water goddess."

She asks the group. "So, where to now? The Tower of Vesta, or the Tower of Zephyr?"

"Vesta!" the group choruses.

"We have the power of water now, so a fire tower should be cake!" Misty vows.

Midori laughs along with the audience. "Very well...we will tackle your next few plays and the Tower of Vesta after intermission!"

As the lights in the theater come up for intermission, the group decides to make their way backstage. "Considering we don't have any potential actors to pick up around the Tower of Vesta, what play should we do for our next show?" Brock asks the others as the stage's curtains close for intermission.

"Your play notes are backstage, so let's take a look!" Serena suggests as she leads the way backstage...
