I just wanted to add that in xy&z it looked like Ash was gonna catch an eevee but it ended up going to Serena. It evolved too, into sylveon. So that's two cases they let the female side characters evolve an eevee.

I just thought of something that (though unlikely) would actually be pretty cool? Maybe? A choice between two rivals. Since you can pick the gender of your trainer, imagine being able to pick your rival's too? A girl and a guy. And whichever you don't choose as your rival ends up being a friend...

That's true. The trials were pretty boring for sure, so maybe that's one of the reasons I didn't really like them all that much, but you're also right it'd be a little weird if they did skip gyms two generations in a row. Maybe they can start alternating or something between gyms and no gyms...
