Well XY(Z) was essentially three years of Ash being treated as a snow flake, so I guess it was fitting that his Greninja got a one-of-a-kind super special upgrade.

And then the writers had Ash release Greninja when he was no longer relevant. Much bond. Such wow.

Given how popular Greninja was overall and how much relevance he had in Gen 6, it was reasonable that he'd get the new form over Ash's other Pokemon IMO. Pikachu didn't need that gimmick since he's at the pinnacle of popularity no matter which saga he's in.
