I think Hugh is a pretty good model for rivals to emulate, yeah. I think he took the best parts of Barry, while the other friendly rivals have mostly taken the worst parts. Cheren and Bianca are fine though.

A missed opportunity in Gen V was not having a Gym Leader fight you in a Triple or Rotation Battle.
