It really did feel rewarding to figure stuff like this and this (always have to stress the god-tier route design in that image) out. Even Kalos had a few decent ones, this one in particular. And on the subject of ice puzzles, I liked how Frost Cavern implemented diagonal movement into its puzzles.
Probably been said before but dungeon design
I am generally not a nostalgic person, but playing through Sword a couple of times now, I do feel starved for good dungeons, and I really don't understand why they went away after Gen 6. I know peoples' go-to answer will be "they want to make the...
He never "brags about how many he caught."
When you leave to go to the professor's house, he says: "All right! I’m gonna catch loads of Pokémon. The professor will be shocked when she sees!"
When you actually get to Magnolia's house, you have another battle with him, and he's added Rookidee to...
Sword & Shield pretty much split the difference on rival personalities, no? Bede's a prat, Hop is very friendly, and Marnie is more straightforwardly competitive. Furthermore, they all manage to have their own personal arcs and narratives in a way that, say, the Kalos rivals did not.
That's fair. But at the same time, how often do you run into forks in the road in Sinnoh where you're forced to go a certain way due to some artificial roadblock? The north and west exits of Jubilife are cut off until you get the relevant HMs. The north exit of Oreburgh is waiting until you come...
"A fair bit" is really underselling BW in that regard. They have tons of optional/side areas.
- The entirety of Routes 17 and 18 are optional
- The majority of Wellspring Cave is completely optional
- Route 3 has a hidden spot you can reach via Surf
- There's, as you mentioned, the Desert...
I miss when they put actual effort into the in-game television programs. That was one of my favorite little sources of worldbuilding, and now it’s just boring malasada ads.
In particular, I really liked that B2W2 had the spatial awareness to feature Nancy and Christoph on the TV.
I agree, and I would say that there is a tangible difference between the earlier examples compared to the people like Anabel/Zinnia/Ryuki. I think the people in Gens 2-4 were just everyday people, going about their earthly business and moving forward on their own journeys. You could imagine them...
I don’t know about that... in Gen 6, the only Legendaries were the box mascots, and they got a bit of mythology, albeit a very simple one. And then in Gen 7, the tapu got tons of mythology and focus, and Silvally got a nice Mewtwo/Genesect-esque kind of backstory.
But if you’re referring to...
This gets at something that I... well, I don’t exactly “miss” it; what there is of it can be all there is and I can be totally fine with that if need be. What I’m talking about is the mysticism of the early games, that waned somewhat in Gen 3 and then pretty much dissipated completely in Gen 4...
