It's in Ash's character to try to win rematches with the Pokémon he used in the original battles. Like how in the Sinnoh League, he used the same team against Paul as he had used in their earlier Full Battle, despite having the option to use any of his reserve Pokémon as well.

An Electric-type Gym Leader isn't really the best choice to fight a bunch of Ground Pokémon.

I just finished watching the episode with subtitles. I now understand a whole lot more about it. What made Ash so gloomy was his class drop. He realized that he was trying to use a battle strategy he hadn't properly trained at. And in the end, he even calls out his own stupidity.

We did see a couple of SOS Battles in Sun & Moon, but those were both Totem battles.

The Flygon battle and Ash showing how he was affected by his loss to Bea, at least.

Doesn't seem all that likely in my honest opinion.

Ash was already dejected at the end on the Bea battle, and here, that dejection escalated into a losing streak.

I thought it was still cool to see Goh coming up with it on his own.

It was in Mauville City. And it was done by Flygon.

I too want Goh to use better Poké Balls, but I personally don't see it as a glaring problem for most of the time.
