Well, this thread is about the canon story that is independent of the actions of every player out there. We wouldn't be able to get very far if we accounted for so many possibilities.
I don't know where this assumption that Mewtwo belonged to several trainers is coming from as far as the canon story is concerned. We can only hazard a guess that Red caught it if we go by Origins.
I really don't think that the multiverse should be used to break gameplay and story segregation. I was implying that Red, the canon player character, may have caught and subsequently released Mewtwo.
Never underestimate the power of time travel. The 2011 site wasn't anything to write home about, though, as it was written from a meta (real-life) perspective. Anyway, we can't begin to speculate what Mewtwo might have been doing in Unova. Fighting Genesect like in the anime? Unfortunately...
It can also be released by the player.
Why do we need multiple timelines to explain that? Mewtwo can teleport and even fly. If anything, the report implies that Mewtwo was sighted in Kanto and Kalos in the very same universe.
Mewtwo could have gone back and forth between the two caves in any timeline. So I am not really bothered about the apparent discrepancy, which I'd wager is just an oversight.

I don't think those examples would work, as there are too few in-game references to go on for an interesting report. Kazuki just summarizes facts (obscure or otherwise) from the games.
He does reference the mascot legendaries and even the bird trio when describing each region.
The Japanese 20th anniversary website recently added a very interesting section just about the Mew/Mewtwo mystery. While it basically just covers what we already know from the games, the way it is presented is still interesting, at least to theorists such as myself. So I asked クリスタル to translate...
