Not to disagree with your other points, but doesn't the Battle Tree fit this just fine? It's a battle facility with returning characters and various challenges.

Necrozma's plot in SuMo was just...nothing. They had to have had some idea for what they wanted to do with it-there's no way it was made with no purpose in mind.
