I typically try to avoid the whole starter-is-a-huge-deal trope in general, but I was guilty of using the same few pokemon as signatures when i did write pokemon fanfiction. (Shellos and Porygon deserve a break, bless them) In general, I feel like the idea of a starter is kind of awkward outside...
I guess I can see why people do it, But I personally try to avoid making canon characters central to the plot of my Pokemon fics. I just find it easier that way.
I get this feeling, and honestly I think six Pokemon teams just aren't a good idea in fics in general. There's a rather lengthy fic I'm writing/planning (That also happens to be my main writing project for at least the next year and a half) where the main character, Michael, only has four...
Jeez, another one I can answer. I've got a fic in planning that has a porygon as a super important role. I'll probably post the first chapter tomorrow actually.
I mean, I'm a little late to reply to this, but I've got a story in planning with a dark type user who isn't edgy. He's sellsword type of trainer, and the whole dark type theme is used to represent mystery and moral ambiguity rather than emo vibes
Well, for a PMD fic it'd obviously be different seeing as the main characters are the Pokemon themselves, and it's more of a fight than a sport in that case
I mean, in some situations, it fits. Like, hell, I write horror fiction and my story that I recently started, Real Fear, is pretty dark and gritty. But the way I see it, most Pokemon battling is like a sport, and sports don't tend to be a struggle for survival.
Let's see if I can contribute
Pokemon battles are dark and gritty and and a struggle for survival
Main character has at least one shiny Pokemon
Main character is absurdly powerful without any definitive reason why
OC rival is literally Silver with a different name
That's all I can come up...
