I think it's just because the XY/XYZ director had been hailed as based for the longest time for his decisions on the series, and I guess a lot of hopes were riding on him actually averting the status quo...

On a side note, someone I was talking to on Discord believed that the Harambe Pokemon was real up until we pointed out. Wow.
 
The XY anime was about 1000 times better than BW, but it still suffered from a few very distracting issues (at least for me). The biggest being Ash Greninja. There was so much screentime devoted to hammering into the audience's skulls that it and Ash share some weird psychic bond (without ever actually giving a reason why or how) and so many battles were won practically singlehandedly by that abomination that it made me begging for the previous King Camera Hog Infernape. Also Ash's team was handled really well at the beginning of the series, but then after catching Goomy it just went downhill fast with Goomy evolving twice in almost record time just to be released and replaced by another Dragon (who also evolved much faster than most baby Pokémon have been shown to do) ... and then to come back again later. Just what was even the point? Why did Ash only have 5 Pokémon through most of the region? And all of his Pokémon stopped learning any new moves after a point too. It's like they just gave up developing his other Pokémon because Greninja was suddenly the protagonist of the show.
