Okay, it's that time again. Time for another brainstorming blog. This time for my eventual Pokemon fic: Battle From the Heart. Those who have been on these forums for a while might remember this little idea from wayback when (as in Gen 6 wayback) that was ultimately shelved because I wasn't skilled enough to get it going. Now, after having written a lot more stuff and become a (semi)competent writer, along with the fact that I've always been tempted by this idea even after shelving it it's time to give it another whirl. Especially since it's safe to say this idea will be more popular here than some of my previous ones like Chaos Rising, Dawn of Courage, and Shooting Star Rider.

So, to start things off, it's Poke-team planner showcase. Because this'll be a multi-region fic the cast (mostly Geo, Vivi/Victor/Weavile, and later Courtney) will get various teams. Now these teams are still a work in progress, and not all the moves the Mons will have used will be included (ie: Lora the Gardevoir will have used Confusion and Disarming Voice early on but forgotten them in favor of Psychic and Moonblast), rather the moves selected will be the "final" moveset for that saga. But everything is subject to change, especially with any feedback, which would be appreciated. This first post will only showcase the Sinnoh saga, since that's where everything starts. And, for the record, TMs and Move Tutors will be a thing in this series, along with Held Items, along with taking a page from Adventures that a Mon can have as many moves as they want but can only use 4 in official battles like Gyms (though rando trainer battles are fair game). So, with that out of the way, let's get the show on the road.

Blast Off Line(s)

All: Looks like Team Galactic is launching into orbit again!

That should do for a start. Again, things are subject to change, especially since this idea is in its baby stages, and any feedback is welcome. But this is what I've got thus far, at least for the Sinnoh saga. Let me know what you all think. Until next time.

I've been meaning to update this for a bit now. I've since changed things around a bit for the Sinnoh Saga. Mostly in the form of giving certain characters more teams, improving on them, and creating recurring characters that the cast will run into from time to time. Since it's a bit much to update the original post I'll just post all the updates here.

This is one of the recurring characters (at least for Sinnoh). She develops a crush on Geo early one and starts mimicking his creative battling style in hopes of impressing him.

This character is the Conway of the series (or at least Sinnoh). He's smart (to the point of being a bit smug), strategic (as evident by moves like Stealth Rock), tends to perform Stealth Hi/Byes, and has a crush on Jodi. While he sometimes creeps Jodi out (especially with his Stealth Hi/Byes), he does offer good advice that the gang often uses to further aid them along the road.

Another recurring character that the gang will encounter from time to time. Like Cato he tends to offer the gang some good ideas/advice (ie: he recommended that Geo teach his then-Grottle Energy Ball, which Geo would take a step further later on thanks to an accidental discovery) while also sparing with the gang every so often to test his strength. Not sure if he'll be a Gym Badge challenger or a Coordinator (or even both like how Nando was in the anime).

And last, but not least, Barry, who is a friendly rival to Geo. Not much to say here except his team is basically his BDSP team with some adjustments and more of a high-risk/high-reward battling style. He won't be taken as seriously as Geo's "main" rival, Orion, but he's a rival nonetheless.

That's about all for now, at least for Sinnoh. Feedback is appreciated. Until next time.

Been meaning to update this for a while now. Anyway, I wanted to show the first chapter of Battle From the Heart, fresh from the editing table. This'll give you an idea of how the series will look (at least at the start). Feedback is appreciated. Enjoy.

A New Beginning

It was mid-afternoon in a small town nestled in the Sinnoh Region. A large mansion with an even larger backyard lay within the sleepy town of Twinleaf Town. Inside one of the rooms in the mansion a young man was hard at work.

In the room, which had a bunch of fitness equipment, a young man peddled on an exercise bike. He was in his early 20s and about average height for his age, with fair skin, grey eyes, messy blackish hair with a blue tint, and a rather frail and thin frame. He was wearing what looked like sports clothing, with the exception of a bandana wrapped on his head, which was colored grey with what looked like golden eye patterns on the front and red triangles that resembled the inside of bat-like ears. Standing nearby was a small creature.

It is a humanoid creature with a white body, thin arms and legs that widen toward the feet along with a wispy extension trailing off the back of its feet, creating the overall impression of a nightgown or oversized dress. Most of its head is covered by green hair that resembles a bowl cut, but a pair of pinkish-red eyes could partly been seen underneath. Two flat, red horns protruded on top of its head: a large one toward the front and a smaller one at the back.

It looked up at the young man, who was peddling at a steady pace, but it was clear he was tired. After a few more minutes he stopped to take a rest, sweat drenching his frame, panting. The small creature looked up at him, concerned.

He managed to say, “I’ll… be okay… Lora… I’m just tired. Could you be a good Pokémon and fetch me a bottle of Fresh Water from the mini-fridge behind you? You can use Confusion to get it if you want, I don’t mind.”

The Pokémon nodded, smiling. She then turned around to face the mini-fridge that was in the room, her eyes started glowing, and a bluish outline formed around the mini-fridge. It then opened up with psychic powers, revealing several drinks, before a bottle of water levitated out of it and handed to the young man, closing the fridge door afterward.

The man smiled, “Thanks, Lora, this’ll help. Especially since I still have some more exercise I need to do. You’re a good little Ralts, you know that? I’m glad you’re my partner, especially since the day will soon be upon us.”

The Ralts smiled, blushing a bit, saying something in her native language, making the man smile again.

“I appreciate what you’re saying, Lora. And I’m looking forward to it, too. I’m long overdue for this, and the doctors said it would be a big help to me. I admit I’m a tad worried, given my physical condition is still a work in progress. But I know that having you around will help keep me safe. Now, I need to drink.”

He opened up the bottle of Fresh Water and began guzzling the contents down eagerly, his thirst on full display. After draining a good two-thirds of the bottle he stopped, taking a moment to pant. Lora then said something, looking up at the bottle of Fresh Water.

“You want some, Lora?” he asked. He held it out, “Go right ahead. I’ve got to finish the last of my exercises so you’re free to finish it off.”

Lora smiled before using her psychic powers to levitate the bottle out of her owner’s hands and down to her level. She began drinking what was left in the bottle while the young man resumed his exercises. After about half an hour he stopped, slumping over the bike’s handles, panting and exhausted, making Lora look up with concerned eyes.

Just then another man entered the room. He looked like a fitness trainer. He could see the young man slumped over the bike’s handles and the small Ralts looking up at him with concern.

“You’ve been working very hard, Geo,” the fitness trainer said. “It’s been a long battle for you, but you never gave up and worked tirelessly to overcome the obstacles you faced. To think you’re the first survivor of HBD. To anyone else it was a death sentence, especially before that breakthrough surgery was discovered a little more than a year ago. But you were willing to fight HBD for 12 years, utterly determined to beat it despite there being no cure at the time of your diagnosis. Your fighting spirit is amazing: able to hold out all those years, fighting tooth and nail against such a terrible heart condition, only for your efforts to be rewarded when a cure was found. And then you spent the next year undergoing physical therapy to regain your strength, as that battle did a number to your body. As your physical therapist and trainer I watched you go from being barely able to do five minutes on that exercise bike to being able to do nearly 90 minutes on it daily. It makes me proud to have watched you grow and recover from that 12-year battle you had with HBD. And to think that, soon, you will be able to start your journey and become a Pokémon Trainer. The doctors and myself know it’ll help strengthen you further, more than any fitness equipment can do. You make me proud.”

Geo responded wearily, “Thank you… for saying that… Dr. Diamond… I’m looking forward… to it… especially since… I have Lora here… to help me…”

Lora blushed a bit, clearly flattered at Geo’s statement.

Dr. Diamond replied, “It’s amazing that you found that little Ralts. She had wandered into your mother’s garden, looking for some food and rest, and you two hit it off immediately. It’s clear you two were meant to be. That fate’s hand guided you two together. And, rather fittingly, you two are very much alike. You’re both frail physically but strong mentally, along with being quite stubborn and determined. It’s no surprise her Nature is Bold, like you identified, which makes you two all the more of fitting a pair. Now, that’s enough for today, Geo. Go wash up and get some dinner, as you’ll need it after that long workout. I’ll document your progress from the exercise equipment as usual and give it to your parents to show them how far you’ve come since I first started training and rehabilitating you after that long fight you had with HBD. Your parents will be so proud of you.”

Geo nodded wearily, “Thank you, Dr. Diamond, for everything you’ve done for me and my family. You’ve been invaluable in helping me rebuild my strength after all those years in the hospital. I’m still not fully there yet, but I’ve made great progress, if I do say so myself. Hopefully a journey will take care of the rest of my rehabilitation and help me regain the strength I once had. And, besides, I’m hungry.” He got off the exercise bike before turning to Lora, “Lora, time to go. On my shoulder, as per normal, though I gotta wash off all this sweat first. Then it’ll be time for dinner.”

Lora nodded and using her psychic powers was able to levitate herself up onto Geo’s right shoulder, gently nuzzling her Trainer warmly, making him smile. The duo waked out of the exercise room and toward the bathroom so he could shower, leaving Dr. Diamond behind. The physical trainer started examining the different exercise equipment Geo had used today, jotting down information on the various meters the equipment had, smiling.

“He’s come a long way,” he said silently. “From being barely able to claw out of the room after a few minutes of exercise to using multiple exercise equipment throughout the day. He’s gotten much stronger and regained a lot of his lost stamina. But, like he said, he’s still got a ways to go. And he’s still dangerously underweight even after eating actually nutritious and filling food for over a year. Guess it proves that not only is hospital food as bad as everyone says but his metabolism is just that fast. He’ll need to almost eat constantly if he’s to gain any weight. Especially since going on a Pokémon journey will burn up calories with ease, not that he doesn’t have issues with that to begin with. But, still, he’s come a long way since he first came home from the hospital last year after that 12 year battle with such a terrible heart condition. But he worked very hard, showing his indomitable fighting spirit, and overcame all the obstacles he’s faced. He’s still a work in progress but it makes me proud to see how far he’s come. And makes me proud to have witnessed it from start to finish.”

At the time Lora was standing outside of a bathroom, waiting. Inside Geo was in the shower, washing the sweat off his body. With his torso bare one could now see a long, thin scar on his chest just off-center and to the left. His exposed torso also showed that his chest was rather sunken, his ribs partly protruding through the skin, and his stomach was flat to the point it almost looked like it was caving in on itself. As he washed he looked down at the scar, a sad smile on his face.

“That scar…” he said softly. “It’s a reminder of the trials I faced during my 12-year battle with HBD. That scar is where I had my five heart surgeries. But unlike some who treat scars with contempt, I see it as a badge of courage. Because while it’s a harsh reminder of how much I had to endure during that long battle, it’s also proof of me prevailing over it. I was given a zero percent chance of survival when I was first diagnosed with HBD because back then it had no cure and was no better than a death sentence. But I challenged those odds… and came out on top. My body paid the price for that 12 year battle but it was worth it. That’s why I spent the last year undergoing physical therapy. And the day where I finally start my long-awaited journey through Sinnoh, which even the doctors have said would be an excellent way of helping me recover and build up my strength more. And, hopefully bulk me up with muscle mass a bit more, too, as even to this day I’m still a good 45 pounds underweight despite all the snacking and eating I’ve been doing. Damn my metabolism for being so quick, as it’s clearly counterproductive to me right now.” He shook his head, chuckling lightly, “Heh… I’m one of the few people whose doctors want them to gain weight. Usually it’s the opposite. No matter. Just a bit more time and soon Lora and I will be on our way.”

After showering for a while longer he got out, dried off, and put on some fresh clothes while also putting on his bandana, which seemed to be he trademark item. After picking up his old, sweaty clothes, he unlocked the bathroom door and walked outside, where Lora was waiting for him. She smiled and floated up to his shoulder, nuzzling against him. He chuckled lightly, deposited his dirty clothes down a laundry chute that had his name over it, and made his way down to the dining room.

There was a woman talking to a man who looked like a chef. Both soon noticed Geo and Lora entering the room. The woman turned to him, smiling. Despite being clearly near middle-aged she was still quite youthful looking, with fair skin, dirty blonde hair, grey eyes, a well-developed frame, and a healthy appearance. She was dressed in what looked like a rather fancy minidress, mostly blue and black in color, with an almost tomboyish flair to it while still being very stylish.

“Geo, I heard from your physical therapist about the progress you’ve made in your physical therapy,” she said warmly. “Looks like everything is nearly set. I know you must be hungry. I’ve just told our chef to prepare a big meal for you. Your father should be home soon, as he’s out collecting various things that’ll help you in your soon-to-be adventure.” She gained a melancholy expression, “To think after all this time you will finally be able to start the journey you had wanted to go on back when you were a kid. While it pains your old mother to see you go… I know it’ll be for the best. Both the doctors and your physical therapist know it’ll be good for you. But do be careful, as you’re more frail than most other Trainers, be it kids or adults. But I have faith in you and Lora. You were always so strong willed, and you proved just how unbreakable your spirit is by challenging a zero percent odds of survival from HBD… and won. While I worry about your health I also know this is for the best, as there is little better training for one’s body than exploring our craggy region of Sinnoh.”

Geo gained a sad smile, “I know, mom. But like you said it’s for the best. This is my chance to finally make my mark on the world along with overcoming my body’s current frailty. And you can rest easy knowing that I have that Pokégear dad got me with all the phone numbers ready in case of any problems. And, of course, I have Lora here to help keep me safe.” He gently rubbed the Ralts’ chin, “She may not look it but she’s reliable. So I’m in good hands.”

Lora smiled, nodding and raising her small fist into the air triumphantly.

Geo’s mother smiled warmly, “I know. It was fate that guided you and Lora together. You both may be frail physically but your minds and wills are as strong as diamonds. I know she’ll keep you safe. Now, enough of this. Your father should be home soon. You and Lora settle in for dinner, as after that workout I dare say you both could use some refueling.”

Geo and Lora nodded before he sat down at the dining room table. Lora gently jumped off his shoulder and positioned herself in a spot nearby. Not long afterward Geo’s father appeared. He looked like an older version of his son, possessing the same blackish-blue hair, only his was more neatly groomed, the same facial structure and cheekbones, and the same shoulder width. He was carrying what looked like a rather bulky sports backpack, consisting of three layers of red, purple, and white, with what looked like a dark blue sleeping bag rolled up on top, and thick straps. He smiled as he saw his son and Lora.

“Geo, Lora, you both look good,” he said warmly. “I take it your exercise routine went well?”

Geo nodded, “Yes, dad, it went smoothly. Nothing bad
or anything to report. I see you got me a new backpack, though it looks different than the styles I’ve seen here in Sinnoh.”

His father nodded, “Yes, that’s true. This is an import from Paldea, as while I find Sinnoh’s styles and ruggedness to be quite fine, Paldea has some nicer brand names so it was worth the shipping costs. Plus, given how varied the region’s environments are, from plains to deserts to forests to icy mountains the various backpack companies would know how to make their products durable. I’ve since filled it up with various items you might need like Potions, Antidotes, various types of Poké Balls like Heal Balls, Net Balls, and so on. I’ve also packed several of your favorite snacks and drinks into it, since the doctors are still concerned about your weight, along with some ripe Berries like Oran, Pecha, Sitrus, and others for the road ahead. Oh, and I also packed some tins of various Poffins that you made to give to Lora and any other Pokémon you catch. Before you go out on your journey you need to also make and pack some more food like sandwiches and such, since I know you’re good at making those. That way you won’t be short on food before you and Lora head out. I just hope your new backpack won’t be too heavy for you.”

Geo replied, “Heavy or not, it’ll be necessary for the journey ahead. And, besides, the added weight will be good strength training for me. Now, just a curious question but did you also pack some things like TMs, or Technical Machines, and Held Items?”

“A few. In terms of TMs I got a few useful moves, though nothing crazy. Stuff like TM40S, TM34S, TM51S, TM61S, and TM88S. While in terms of Held Items I got were things like an Expert Belt, a Muscle Band, a Wise Glasses, a Wide Lens, a Zoom Lens, and a Bright Powder. I also managed to get some really stylish pouches from a shop in Veilstone City that works alongside certain Held Items like the Bright Powder. There’s more than that but I didn’t want to bog your backpack down too much. They’re all in the various pockets of your new backpack. While I hope you won’t have to make use of everything in there at least you have some things that might come in handy down the road.”

Geo smiled, “Thanks, dad, I knew a savvy shopper like you would know what to hunt down. Now, sit down, as I’m certain dinner will be ready soon.”

His father nodded, putting the backpack down beside Geo’s chair, and sat down in another seat. Soon Geo’s mother joined them. Not long after the chefs brought out plates of food for the family and Lora, much to the young Ralts’ delight.

“Here you are, Sir Geo,” one of the chefs said to him. “A large Take Down Steak with Cheri Berry sauce, garlic and chive mashed potatoes, Rindo Salad, and a freshly baked Pecha Berry Pie for dessert. Eat up, young master.”

Geo nodded, “Thank you, Edward. Everything looks delicious.”

The family tucked into their meal. It was clear Geo had gotten the largest serving of food, not that anyone seemed to mind. Lora had also been given a plate of food consisting of things like various Berries, a salad, and what looked like a steak of some kind chopped into bite-sized pieces. Lora eagerly dug into her meal, clearly happy with it, making Geo and his family chuckle. Soon, after dessert the plates were empty, with the family being very satisfied.

“Excellent work, Edward, my good man,” Geo’s father said. “Left nothing to be desired.”

The head chef bowed, “Thank you, Master Irvine. I’m glad the meal met your expectations.”

Geo then reached for his new backpack and tried to pick it up. He had a little trouble at first because of its weight but after a moment he was able to strap it onto his back. He took a moment to get a feel for it, adjusting the straps accordingly to better accommodate his needs before smiling.

“The backpack is great, dad,” he said. “A bit heavy but like I said it’ll be good strength training for me. Now, let’s see if I can carry both it and Lora. Lora, on my shoulder, please.”

Lora nodded and floated up and onto Geo’s right shoulder, positioning herself on the backpack a bit more. Geo stumbled a bit at first at the added weight but was able to stand upright a moment later.

“It’ll take some getting used to but I’ll manage.”

His mother gave a small smile, “It’s a shame Lora won’t go in her Luxury Ball that you caught her in. But the poor, sweet thing is claustrophobic so you only keep her Luxury Ball on-hand when absolutely necessary. But, at the same time, her being out of her ball means she can be ready to help you at a moment’s notice if anything bad happens.”

Irvine’s eyes widened, “Oh, I almost forgot. Geo, inside your backpack is a Pokédex from Professor Rowan. Even though you won’t be going to his lab to pick up a traditional Starter Pokémon like Turtwig he gave you a Pokédex to help you identify whatever Pokémon you run into and what moves it might have. Hopefully you can get some good use out of it.”

Geo smiled, “Thanks, dad, I appreciate it. Give Professor Rowan my thanks as well. Now, let me get used to carrying this backpack before I go up to my room to rest, as I’m still a bit tuckered out from my physical therapy exercises. Come on, Lora.”

Lora nodded and the duo left the dining room and started to walk around the mansion, getting used to the weight of the backpack. His parents smiled as they saw this.

“It’s hard to believe Geo is ready to go out into the world and become a Trainer after those long, hard-fought years against HBD,” his mother said warmly.

Irvine nodded, “Yes, Tanya, it feels almost surreal. I was worried he’d never beat HBD but he kept fighting: even after 12 years. And now, both cured of the condition and having spent the last year building up his strength and stamina he’s ready to tackle the challenges ahead. It makes me so proud to see it. But I hope he’ll stay safe and be careful, as his body is still a work in progress so there’s only so much he can do in his current state. But the doctors all agreed that a journey is just what he needs to build up his strength and become something amazing.”

A little while later, after marching around the mansion for a bit, Geo returned to his room. It was a luxurious room with a large bed that could easily fit three people in it, a dresser, a bedside table with various items including an alarm clock, several shelves full of items, a full-sized mirror, and what looked like a small bed that could fit a fair-sized animal. Geo put his backpack down, prompting Lora to float off his shoulder. He got undressed and into some more comfortable night clothes before walking over to his bed. Lora made her way toward the smaller bed, tucking herself in, clearly happy. Geo got settled and turned off the lights in the room as darkness started to blanket the Sinnoh Region.

He turned to Lora, “Well, Lora, we need to rest up, as our journey will soon begin.”

Lora nodded, saying something in a cheerful tone, before curling up to rest. Geo gave a small smile before fading into a deep sleep, knowing they were soon going to start their adventure.

A few days later the day had arrived. Geo was dressed in more durable clothes consisting of a black short sleeved vest over a dark purple T-shirt, dark orange and brown exploration pants with large pouches on the legs, a sturdy belt with small pouches on it, black socks and red and brown hiking boots, along with his trademark bandanna. He was testing the weight of his backpack, which had new items added into it since last time, thus it was heavier than before. Lora waited until Geo was ready. He gave her a nod, which prompted her to float up onto his shoulder.

His mother said in a melancholy tone, “Today’s the day, Geo. It pains us to see you go but this journey will do you a lot of good. Now, not to act like a typical mother, you do have your Pokégear packed, right? And anything else you might need, right?”

Geo nodded, “Yes, mom, I’ve got everything I need. I made sure to check and double-check after breakfast, with Lora helping ensure that I had everything. I’ll be okay, mom, don’t worry. This is for the best, and I’m long overdue for this journey. But I’ll keep in touch.”

His father said, “Just be careful, Geo. Sinnoh has many rocky paths and uneven ground so don’t push yourself too hard or get hurt. But as long as you have Lora I feel you’ll be fine. Now, go out there and make the Shard Family proud.”

“I will, dad.” He turned to Lora, “Ready to go, partner?”

Lora nodded, giving a cheer as she did.

“Keep the home fires burning as I’ll be back one day. Let’s go, Lora.”

With a final deep breath, Geo and Lora exited the mansion and started to make their way out of Twinleaf Town and into the vast region of Sinnoh. As they traveled they saw some Pokémon running around, mostly plump brown rodents with buck teeth and small bugs with red bodies and stiff antennae. Soon they reached the next town, which was larger than Twinleaf Town but still had a quaint feel to it.

“Lora, this is Sandgem Town,” Geo explained. “Professor Rowan’s research lab is here.”

Lora then noticed something and pointed in a certain direction. Geo looked in the same direction. There he saw a massive mansion and an even bigger property on the far outskirts of the town. It was so massive it was easily the size of Sandgem Town itself.

“Oh, that? That’s the Platinium Family’s mansion. They’re the richest family in Sinnoh, with my family, the Shard Family, being the second richest. As you can see, their home is downright enormous, even dwarfing our own, and that’s before factoring in their property size. They’re technically part of Sangem Town, as they are in the zoning area, but because of the sheer size of their home, which is about as big as Sandgem Town itself, their property is also kind of its own beast and occupies the land to the east of town. I’ve heard of rumors that the Platinium Family mansion even has a tram not unlike the one in the Great Marsh that allows them to go from one end to the other.”

Lora’s eyes widened in surprise, saying something to Geo, clearly stunned.

“I know, it’s hard to believe, Lora. But that’s what the rumors say. Granted, I don’t know for sure if it’s true or not, but I wouldn’t put it past them. But it’s also no surprise, given that the Master of the house works alongside Professor Rowan and other researchers while the Mistress of the house runs all the Contest Halls in Sinnoh, along with various hotels. So they’re swimming in money, even more than our family. Not that’s our concern. Now, let’s press on a bit longer before I need to take a break. Maybe we can catch a new friend while we’re at it. But, for now, let’s head to Route 202 and work our way from there. Okay?”

Lora nodded and the duo resumed traveling. However, not long after they reached the next route Geo started to slow down. He was panting a bit and looking a bit tired. Lora gave him a concerned look.

“I’ll… be fine Lora,” he said. “I just need a moment to rest. Let’s take a small break so I can have a drink.” He took a moment to look around before saying, “That fallen log looks like a good spot. Let’s take a seat so I can give myself a chance to rest.”

Nodding, the duo made their way toward the fallen log. Geo sat down on it, panting a bit. Lora floated off his shoulder and stood next to him. He then rummaged through his backpack and pulled out a canned beverage.

“Yum, Lemonade, my favorite. Bottoms up.”

He opened the can and began drinking the Lemonade, though he took his time so he could enjoy it. Lora dug into his backpack and fished out a small, blue, round Berry. She smiled and started to eat it, clearly happy. Geo merely chuckled as he continued drinking his Lemonade. Before long both had finished. Geo tucked the empty Lemonade can into his backpack before standing up.

“That’s better. Let’s go, Lora. Hmm…”

His attention was redirected to a Pokémon appearing from above. It is an avian Pokémon with primarily grayish-brown plumage, with a large white marking on its face resembling a mask, and a white spot on its chest. The rest of its head and the lower half of its wings was black, with a long, orange beak with a black tip, and oval, black eyes with white pupils. A small tuft of feathers curled over the back and its head, and a small, pointed ruff surrounded its neck, alongside two black tail feathers with a white feather between them and orange feet with three toes in the front and one in the back. It was busy pecking at ground, searching for food.

“That’s a Starly!” Geo said, pulling out his Pokédex and pointing it toward the small bird.

The Pokédex beeped after scanning the Starly before stating, “Starly, the Starling Pokémon. They flock around mountains and fields, chasing after bug Pokémon. However, they bicker if the group grows too big. Their singing is noisy and annoying.”

Geo gained a smile, “Starly are very good Pokémon. Not just for their aerial prowess but they’re deceptively strong for their size. Lora, let’s catch that Starly.” He gave a gesture, “Battle on, Lora!”

Lora nodded and jumped in front of Geo, taking a battle-ready pose. The Starly soon noticed this, quickly turned, and started to hover off the ground, ready for battle.

“Lora, use Disarming Voice!”

Lora opened her mouth and released a beam of pink soundwaves surrounded by hearts and musical notes from it toward the Starly. The Starly tried to dodge the attack but it was able to strike it anyway.

Geo smirked, “Nice try, but Disarming Voice never misses unless the target is using Fly or Dig. Plus it bypasses Substitute because it’s a sound-based move. You’re gonna have to do better than that.”

Starly’s eyes narrowed, giving a cry, before charging in, wings spread out and glowing.

“Dodge that Wing Attack, Lora!”

Lora waited for the right moment before jumping over the Starly, dodging the Wing Attack, much to the Starly’s surprise.

“Now, use Confusion!”

Lora’s eyes glowed and created a telekinetic power that surrounded the Starly, freezing it in place. She then used her arms to make a gesture that slammed the Starly to the ground, hurting it. However, Starly got right back up and started flying again. It then rocketed toward Lora quickly, creating a trail of light behind it. Before Lora could dodge the attack she was struck by the Starly, knocking her back.

“Ack! That was a pretty speedy Quick Attack. Not bad. But we’re still in this!”

Lora jumped back onto her feet, still ready to battle. Starly gained an idea, making it smirk. It then gave a cry before its wings were coated in steel energy, surprising Geo.

“It knows Steel Wing!?” he sputtered. “Lora, be careful of that attack! Steel is super effective against a Fairy type like yourself!”

Lora nodded and prepared for battle. Starly gave a cry before charging in, wings ready to strike the Ralts down.

“Dodge it and fire off Charge Beam!”

Lora dodged the attack by jumping over the Starly before firing a bolt of electricity at it. The attack landed, pummeling the Starly with electrical power.

“Yes! Flying is weak to Electric, after all, so that should do a number to it!”

Starly was freed from the Electric attack before turning around. However, it looked weary. But it gave another cry before charging in again, wings coated in the same steel energy.

“Charge Beam, one more time!”

Lora fired another Charge Beam directly at the Starly. The attack connected, stunning it out of its charge and hitting it with strong Electrical energy. When the attack waned the Starly was barely staying in the air.

Geo took out a pink and cream colored Poké Ball from his backpack, stating, “Now’s my chance! Heal Ball, go!”

He threw the Heal Ball at the Starly. It realized too late that the ball was coming its way and it struck the avian Pokémon. The Heal Ball opened up on its hinges, revealing its inner cavity, before Starly turned into a bolt of red energy and was sucked into the Heal Ball. The Heal Ball then closed before clunking to the ground. It started to wiggle, showing that the Starly was trying to escape. Geo and Lora waited patiently to see what would happen. Soon the ball stopped shaking, followed by a low ping, then sparkles released from the front, signaling a successful capture. Geo walked over and picked up the Heal Ball, smiling.

“Yes! We caught a Starly!” he said happily.

Lora cheered for joy, clearly elated.

Geo knelt down to Lora’s level, “Good work, Lora. That was some fine battling you did. Now… let’s see what this Starly knows.”

He took out his Pokedex and had it scan the Heal Ball. After a moment the results came in.

“So, this Starly knows Quick Attack, Wing Attack, and Steel Wing, just like he showed in the battle. He’s also a male, has the Ability Keen Eye, and has an Adamant Nature. That’s good, as in really good. Now, let’s say hi to our new friend. Come on out, Starly.”

He opened the Heal Ball, releasing a white light, and soon Starly appeared. He took a moment to look around, clearly surprised, before looking at Geo and Lora.

“Starly, my name is Geo, and this is my Ralts, Lora,” Geo said gently. “Will you please come with us? I’m a new Trainer thanks to complications in my early life and I could really use the support. Will you join us?”

Starly looked up at Geo for a moment, seeing the kindness in his eyes, before nodding, giving a chirp. Geo gently petted the Starly on the head, smiling.

“Thank you, Starly. We appreciate that,” he said sincerely. “Now, for a name.” He pondered for a moment before saying, “How about Aero? Sounds tough and cool, right?”

Starly nodded, giving a happy cry.

“Okay, Aero it is. Welcome to the squad, Aero.”

Aero then noticed something. He took a moment to observe his body before saying something to Geo.

“Oh, you’re wondering why you’re not hurt anymore? That’s easy. Heal Balls heal any Pokémon it successfully catches, be it damage and status ailments like Poison. So you’re back to full health despite that battle. Now…” he reached into his backpack and pulled out two Berries, “Here, an Oran Berry for both you and Lora to symbolize our new team. Plus it’ll help heal the damage Lora took from Quick Attack.”

Lora and Aero gratefully took the Oran Berries, held them in a toast before quickly munching on them. Lora’s minor damage was healed as she ate her Oran Berry while Aero was just happy to have a snack. Soon the Oran Berries were gone, leaving a happy Lora and Aero.

Geo held out the Heal Ball again, “Okay, let’s press on. Aero, take five.”

The button on the Heal Ball released a beam of energy that struck Aero, turning him into energy and returning him to the ball. Geo looked at the top half of the Heal Ball, which was semi-transparent, allowing him to see Aero settling in comfortably inside. Geo gently put the Heal Ball away on his belt before standing upright. Lora floated up onto his shoulder, clearly happy. He adjusted his backpack before taking a deep breath.

“My journey has just begun and I now have a new friend,” he said silently. “Let’s go for broke and push our way to the top. And maybe… just maybe… I can tell her how I feel. I wonder if she’ll remember me? Guess I’ll find out soon.”
