A/N: Hello, all! The following fic, Hoenn Wars (guess what happens) takes place in Instrutilius's Travelsverse. However, other than some actions from A.D. and some backstory, I doubt that fact will have any major effect on the story.

Now, the idea for Hoenn Wars predates my knowledge of the Travelsverse; it originated as an RP... that failed miserably. Twice. However, it wasn't a total loss; from that RP I have drawn three characters, Ricky Fowler, who was played by Hide In Plain Sight, and Antoinette (now with the surname LaRosa) played by Feliciano, as well my own character that has since become a Travelsverse character in full. On the note of my own character, he is referred to as Silver, and, unless otherwise noted, characters are NOT talking about GSC Silver.

The events that take place in the following fic also happen long after the events of RSE (the exact time I'd have to look up, but it's not important)

One last thing is that this may or may not be updated sporadically.

Without further ado...

Chapter One: Unrest

Ricky sat in the extravagant lounge room in his best attire; a golden Rolex watch, a custom-tailored Armani suit- with a good discount, too, because of his connections- and with an electronic cigarette between his lips. He has started smoking recently, especially when he was stressed during a mission, but had stopped. Belonging to Team Magma didn’t mean he felt a need to set fire to everything, unlike some people he knew.

He ran a hand through his dirty blonde hair, and wondered if he should have brought his sunglasses as well. He had decided against it when he was informed that the meeting would be underground.

He coughed, looking around like he had been for the past half an hour. He couldn’t remember the last time he had been nervous at all, but he felt uneasy here. He had been instructed to leave his Pokémon for the meeting- no big problem, as Ricky, while not a cruel trainer, did not cultivate especially loving relationships with his team. They trusted each other to get each other through, but Ricky was generally more focused on relationships with the women around him if he had the luxury of time. The lack of the familiar weights might have made him feel more isolated, but not alone; he was used to being alone, even in a crowd. Only recently had he found a real group of people he could trust, and even then, he could count them on one hand.

What was unnerving him the most was that he had been unprepared for the guard at the doorway to the tunnels that took his weapons. Three knives, a small handgun, garrote wire, a Tazer, and a small charge for breaking locks- he didn’t even realize he had brought them all as the guard pulled them off his person expertly. It made him realize that being a part of Team Magma for a few years began to give one feelings of paranoia. Feelings that have saved his life more than once, but still… negative, and weighing heavily on his mind when he thought about it.

For example, he knew he had checked the room eighteen times by eyesight alone. Twice, when he went to the coffee machine, he had checked every surface he could as stealthily as possible for bumps that might give away bugs, and he carefully tested the coffee before actually drinking it with a packed of “sweetener” the guard had allowed him to keep- it changed the color of a great many poisons and narcotics to a sickly green on contact. The coffee stayed black; he was still drinking it slowly.

He knew that, behind a tapestry of Mount Chimney, there was no wall, but an air vent instead. He knew that the tapestry was also a recreation, because he had owned the original, and it had been destroyed. He knew that there were three Diglett between ten and fifteen feet below ground in the general area because of the time between slight vibrations that he knew from his own Diglett, and verified with his coffee cup, watching the ripples in it. He also knew exactly why those Diglett were there; to cause havoc at a word from the man Ricky was waiting for.

A door on the far end of the room slid open. Ricky tensed, gripping the coffee cup and bringing it halfway to his mouth, ready to throw its burning contents at anyone who rushed him while he dashed for an exit, or, failing that, begin to fight off any assailants.

Maximus Millions- better known as Maxie, one of Hoenn’s most infamous men and leader of Team Magma, walked into the room alone. Ricky did not relax, though he set down his coffee. This is who he wanted to see.

“It is an honor to meet you,” Ricky said, bowing.

Maxie smiled a smile that didn’t reach his eyes; in fact, it gave the impression that it didn’t even reach his mouth, or that he was even attempting to give of a façade of smiling. “Ricky Fowler, is it?” he asked in a voice that could have carved the tunnel system though the mountains. “I have heard good things about you. Let’s discuss your opportunities for advancement in Team Magma.”

Antoinette lay on the beach of the small, deserted island in a bikini, sunbathing. Beside her was the diving gear that she had used to get here, along with her waterproofed Pokénav and four creatures that varied from cute to sinister to ancient to rare. Between her and the sand was a large, blue blanket with a stylized “A” that resembled a skull-and-crossbones.

Antoinette was relaxed, something that didn’t happen often. Few people knew about this island, and those that did didn’t have a reason to come. She had a day off, and was determined to have fun. She had been sunbathing for only a short time, and she was only doing it because it could be combined with resting. Shortly before, she had been swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters in the island’s lagoon, and was a bit tired from it. Soon she would have to begin heading back to Lilycove, but her fun in the water was only the beginning; Lilycove’s nightlife was plenty exiting to ensure she had an enjoyable evening.

Then a loud and rather unpleasant sound broke Antoinette’s lazy line of thinking. She quickly rolled back onto her hands and pushed off, flipping backwards and landing on her feet, scanning the surrounding area. Her Marril, Marie, perched herself on Antoinette’s shoulder, ready to protect its owner. The other three Pokémon- a Drapion, Weavile, and Kabutops- spread out as their eyes darted everywhere, searching for the source of the sound.

Nothing.

Then a massive, oblong object erupted from the sea, sending salty spray everywhere. It rose and rose, then fell back onto the waves. The resulting noise caused Antoinette to cover her ears. Only one man in the world made his entrance in this disruptive way.

She sighed. Archie was here, and she couldn’t do a damn thing about it. There legendary tales about the man’s incredible annoyingness, his over-acting, and the fact that he never made an entrance without his submarine, usually saying, “Hurr hurr, I have something that’s long, hard, and full of seamen.”

Archie appeared on top of the sub, a small speck to Antoinette’s vision. A red light shone next to him, though, and he was quickly being propelled across the water on the back of a shark-like creature.

“I AM THE AQUA HEAD!” he yelled. “BEWARE!”

Antoinette resisted the urge to slap him very, very hard. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Kabutops and Weavile escape into the undergrowth. Traitors.

“Captain,” she said, trying to cover Archie’s title in whatever respect she could muster, “what is it?”

“Hello, Ms. LaRosa,” he said much more loudly than was needed. Antoinette, however, had long discovered it was his minimum volume. “I apologize for interrupting you on… is it your day off I’m interrupting? I can’t remember… Anyway, if it’s your day off, I’m suppose to say sorry. Anyhow, I have great news for you. Recently, one of our Sergeants was killed on a mission during an ambush that ended with only DNA in his teeth left to verify the remains.”

Antoinette glanced around as if she was looking for the hidden camera. “I’m sorry, sir, but I don’t follow. When is one of our Sergeants’ deaths a good thing?...”

“Well, we decided to give you his open position, you see.” Archie thought for a moment, then decided a smile might work. Antoinette was amazed that anything could make Archie look stupider in her head, but the smile did it.

“So…” Antoinette let the syllable hang in the air.

“So… well, I don’t really know what Sergeants do,” Archie said. “Never had to work my way up, you see? I just do large-scale stuff and watch it unfold. So when you report back, ask what you’re supposed to do.”

Antoinette mentally shook her head. “Just one question, Captain. Did you come just to tell me that? Couldn’t you have just delegated it to someone to have me told when I returned?”

“Yes. Except one thing. Something that can’t be trusted through the ranks.” The change in Archie’s voice was subtle but definitely there. A cold certainty, no-nonsense, calculating, and dangerous. “We have a Magma spy. A small, small slip up let us know. I’ve been going around to the most likely suspects, and observing them. Now, I’d like you to get your Weavile and Kabutops here right now, because I need to confirm that they aren’t carrying any kind of documents, and if they get too far, they'll be intercepted and I won't be able to vouch for their safety. Later, a team is going to sweep the island for anything suspicious. You’re the only one that comes here, dearie, and you have some skeletons in your closet.”

Antoinette almost shivered at the coldness his voice radiated. “Louis… Dauphine… hurry back… Hurry back!” she yelled, frozen in place. She had a cold feeling in her gut that, whoever the spy was, Archie would personally escort them to the ninth circle of hell, the frozen hell reserved for traitors.

She also knew that she was very, very glad she had nothing to hide.

Amber inspected the fruit from the stand carefully, making sure she was spending her hard-earned money on something that was worth it. She decided that they passed muster, and handed the bills over to the stall owner as she started home, her pet Electrike at her heel.

Though she smiled to everyone, she was beginning to worry. Food was beginning to rise; rumor had it the crop wasn’t good, and with the Route 111 Desert getting noticeably bigger than it had in the past…

Deep in thought, she bumped into someone and spilled the bananas she had.

“I’m sorry!” the two said in unison. Amber looked up to see a man in his mid-thirties, a red coat, and a cane. “I’m sorry,” he apologized again, helping her up and gathering the bananas. “I’ll buy you some strawberries to make up for it, okay? Actually, here.” He took out a billfold and gave her a few bills in it. “Buy yourself something sweet, if you want, little girl.”

Amber turned bright red. ‘Little girl’? She was sixteen! So what if she was vertically challenged! She snatched the money, kicked the man in the shin, and took off. That’d teach him. Little girl. She was old enough to drive!

“Sorry about that,” Wattson said as he helped the man up. “It wasn’t your bad leg, I hope? She’s… touchy about her height. A bit infamous around here, Terror of the Shins is. She’s actually my grandniece, and much older than she looks.”

The man in the coat rubbed his leg, and grunted. “Got it,” he said. “As long as she doesn’t have a growth spurt and start hitting about a foot higher, I’ll be okay. Where were we?”

“The food crisis.”

“Oh, yes. We know that Magma and Aqua have apparently gone legit- now they’re just kind of religions slash nonprofit organizations. And we know that the desertification isn’t either of their faults.”

“Yes,” Wattson replied. “Magma has been all about beautifying the land, watching for tectonic activity, that sort of thing. Ever since Maxie served out his time they haven’t caused much trouble. Aqua, on the other hand… they’ve been a bit more zealous. Because the purification problems the water is getting, they’ve been resorting to more extreme things. Archie’s back on the wanted list, and in hiding. There have also been some questionable deaths in Magma leadership… usually followed by questionable disappearances in Aqua.”

“So what do we do?”

“We hope the crop failures are just rumors and that more aid arrives sooner.”

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic)

Having already read this, I'll just comment to get people going:

I find this to be an interesting start. I look forward to seeing things progress from hence forth =3

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic)

Oh man, you're more than welcome to use Ricky :D

I really like how you're getting his character just right.

I'm looking forward to reading more.

And about the rest of the fic so far, I really like it. I know a bit of the plot already from the RP, so I'm looking forward to seeing how you change it around a bit.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic)

Thanks. Getting Ricky right wasn't too hard- I remembered the way he was in the RPs, and that, combined with me taking a look over Confessions of a Champion and trying to work your writing style in a bit made it pretty easy. However, there are a few things about him that aren't the same, which you'll see.

I'm really more concerned about derailing Antoinette, because I don't really remember anything exact about how Feli wrote her and I haven't seen anything Feli's written, other than a guest chapter of Bulbagarden!.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic)

You've captured my interest.

I will be reading.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic)

Well, I'm new to this whole Travelsverse thing, but I found this to be very well-written and enjoyable to read. Diction was pretty good, things moved along well, and the dialogue was fun, especially. That reminds me...
“Hurr hurr, I have something that’s long, hard, and full of seamen.”
Is it so wrong that I laughed at this? :-D

Ch. 2: Preparations

Antoinette's morning routine was all but muscle memory by now. It was simple, and gave her time to think. She got up out of bed, took a shower that was just below scalding temperature, got dressed in her Aqua uniform, and began brushing her teeth and doing her makeup simultaneously while her hair dried, a feat that was incredibly odd to see, since most people would think it required three hands to do anything like it.

After her hair had dried sufficiently, she took the long, barbed wire on the counter and wove it into her braid, making sure to not nick herself on any of the poisonous tips. Long hair was a problem in close-quarters combat, and since she wasn't going to cut it, so she made it weapon against anyone foolish enough to try and use it against her.

This was a lesson she had long since learned; if something is a liability, get rid of it or make it dangerous. Her nails? Cut short so they didn't break during at an inopportune time; however, in the case of when she needed to look nice, she could put on fakes that were razor-sharp. Baggy clothing that could get caught or grabbed? Use it to conceal her kris and eskrima sticks so she was never unarmed. Her father had taught her well in any number of lessons like this; she only remembered once in the past ten years she had ever let her guard down completely.

As she finished braiding her lavender hair and deadly wire, she picked up her four Pokeballs on a nearby shelf. She let Marie, her Marill, out to sit on her shoulder. Antoinette's other Pokemon were warriors; Marie was a pet who could look after herself, and served another purpose; many fools let their guards down around a pretty girl with a cute Pokemon on her shoulder.

She checked her watch, and headed outside her room. She had her own beach house in Lilycove, something that had originally put Aqua's eye on her. However, she had refused to using it as a base of operations. Her fondest memories centered around the house, and she wasn't going to defile the house that survived a tsunami by just giving it away. No, he wouldn't have wanted that, and she still insisted on giving the house back if he ever came back to Lilycove.

She shook her head. Memories were all fine and dandy, but she had a job to do.

She knocked on the door to Cove Lily, the meeting place for her new squad. She had three members; two were pretty basic Grunts, but the third caught her eye when she had seen his file. She was still wondering if the red glint on his picture was blood or not, especially with the track record he had.

The door opened, and she registered a blur across her field of vision, ducking without thinking and rolling across the flood. She heard a thunk as something pounded into the wooden doorframe, and she lashed her leg out and into the back of the knees of her attacker. He hit the floor with a satisfying thunk, and her kris was in her hand and at his throat, ready to kill.

Rex Millions smiled through his dreadlocks, though it looked more like baring his fangs.

"So the rumors are true," he said. "A badass, hot, female Sergeant, and I get to work under her. Today must be my lucky day."

"I guess that confirms the rumors about you, too," she spat. "A psychopathic asshole that kills anyone he can get away with killing. And hell, you're only eighteen; what the hell got to you that you're this screwed up in the head?"

Rex licked his fangs. "That's for me to know."

Antoinette looked around for something to tie the crazy bastard up with, since she didn't want him killing the other two squad members. He was going to be a problem if she didn't break him soon.

Ten minutes later, a man who could easily pass as a teacher in his mid-thirties named Alden Olden walked into the room. The door didn't open very far because it hit a climbing pickaxe stuck into the doorframe, which meant he had to slide through the small crack. Once inside, he slipped on the frozen ground, sliding underneath a young man with long dreadlocks hanging from the ceiling, upside-down, and suspended with what looked like tablecloths. A beautiful young woman was also engaging a Mamoswine in hand-to-hand combat.

In short, he wondered if he had walked into another opium den and was being affected by it unusually quickly. Especially since the boy hanging from the ceiling appeared to be growling at him rabidly.

He sighed. Whatever higher being there was, it hated him, he could tell.

Lastly, Donovan McDougal walked into the room. This was important because, in addition to being the third and final member of Antoinette's squad, he got the rampaging Mamoswine, which everyone later learned belonged to Rex, to stop in its tracks with minimal effort by using his Drapion to collapse part of the building onto it.

"I'll pay for that later, I promise," he said to the shocked owner who had come to investigate the complaints of a ruckus in the main room. All he got in reply was a disbelieving blubbering.

Antoinette quickly took control of the situation, assuring the owner again that, yes, there would be compensation, and then getting the two mobile members of her squad to line up beside the third one, who was beginning to get very red in the face and tried to bite Alden when he got too close.

"Squad!" she commanded, and Donovan and Alden stood at attention. She gave them each a good looking-over. Alden didn't look very helpful in a combat situation; he looked more like a librarian or teacher than anything. However, his file gave him as an ex-Fossil Hunter, and he had survived weeks deep in the Route 111 desert with no food or water on his own. Among his other amazing feats of not dying were being on the Lilycove shore when the tsunami hit five or six years back and coming out with only a twisted ankle and lots of bruises, being in Fallarbor during the large earthquake almost ten years ago, and being pulled out of quicksand when only his nose was left aboveground. Antoinette couldn't decide if whatever higher being existed hated him or loved him. However, beyond his incredible survivability, he was also quite brilliant; he had made a living finding tiny rocks in a large desert before anyone else did, so he was cunning and had an amazing eye for detail.

Donovan was a much brighter prospect in the battlefield front; tall, young, muscular, and very athletic looking- he sported a natural tan you only got by spending hours upon hours outside. He was also amazing at extracting information, especially from females, along with appearing inconspicuous or drawing attention to himself to distract. She also understood that the stone at the end of the necklace he wore housed a Spiritomb that he could use, and it could also hide itself from view, coming to his aid quicker than he could pull a Pokeball from his belt. However, he had a tenancy to overdo things. Case in point, collapsing part of a building to stop a Mamoswine. Completely unnecessary. Antoinette had it under control- she was sure her kicks were starting to get through.

Finally, she looked at Rex Millions. His report gave him as amazing in a fight- she had no doubt, as few people are as bloody as him and bad at fighting. It also said he climbed often- he even always carried two climbing pickaxes, which were also used in fighting, as the one embedded in the doorframe attested. He also had climbing boot attachments and skate attachments for his boots; being an Ice specialist, this wasn't surprising.

Now she was going to have to whip them into a team that could fight as one cohesive unit with complete trust in one another. She sighed mentally and wondered how much a shock collar for Rex would cost.

Ricky strolled out of the tunnel entrance, checking to make sure all his weapons had been returned. He didn't bother to check for bugs; he knew he would be followed for however long Maxie deemed necessary, and he knew he couldn't do anything about it. He had decided he was going to go for a drink, maybe find a beautiful woman to spend the night with, and enjoy his new promotion a little by unnerving some newbies.

When he got to the bar, he saw that his plans weren't going to go past getting a drink. He saw the familiar silver sheet of hair, and knew he was going to have to talk to him. He never showed up unless he wanted to talk to someone.

Still, Ricky could still try and get a few drinks and have a little fun before Silver started feeding him his next twenty thousand missions and how they needed to be pulled off.

Unless Silver heard him enter, and turned to face him. Ricky resigned himself to a boring evening listening to Silver plan out how they were going to undermine whatever Aqua was doing. The man was a brilliant strategist, and one of the few people Ricky trusted his life with, but he always seemed engrossed in his world.

"He's here!" Silver yelled, raising his beer. "The man of the night, newly promoted, Ricky Fowler!" The bar erupted into cheers, and Ricky heard his favorite words unexpectedly come out of Silver's mouth; "Drinks on me!"

That was his last clear memory of that evening.

---

Ricky woke up, surprisingly in his own bedroom. There was also a warm spot in the bed next to him, implying he was the second person to wake up. That surprised him, too. She must have been a very early riser.

He quickly strained his powers of drunken memory, getting a face and part of what he was pretty sure was her name. He had had a good night.

He got up groggily, still hung over. He glanced around his room to see if there was anything unfamiliar. The usual spartan room greeted him, and he was satisfied. He then got up and turned to get clothes out of his dresser, and stopped.

On top of his dresser was a bracer and glove, both leather, and Ricky was absolutely sure that it hadn't been there yesterday. He was also certain that he would have noticed such a conspicuous accessory on such an underclothed girl, and decided it wasn't hers. Being his usual careful self, he stood stock still and listened for ticking.

Then he noticed a note next to it. Unrolling it, he scanned it.

To Ricky:

The bracer is not a bomb. It contains a concealed knife that slides out and in to a sheath on the bottom of the bracer, controlled by wires run through rings on the joints of the middle and ring fingers. It can also be locked so that the blade stays in or out by flicking the wrist. Try it out. Think of it as a gift to celebrate your promotion- there are only two like it right now. The other is with you-know-who.

-Silver
A

Ricky threw some clothes on and gingerly grabbed the bracer. Sliding his forearm through, finding the fingerings in the gloves at the end, and flexing his fingers. He extended his fingers and slightly bend his wrist back. In response, a small blade slid out of a hidden sheath. Ricky figured it worked on some kind of spring mechanic. He curled his fingers and it retracted; extend, slide out, curl, retract. Then he extended his fingers and flicked his wrist, hearing a small click and something apparently moved to stop the blade from retracting. It worked. He then unlocked it, retracted it, and locked it again for safety.

Ricky smiled. Sometimes Silver amazed him completely, and this was one of those times. It was obviously for assassination purposes; the note about "you-know-who" solidified that. Ricky was already thinking about good ways to hide the bracer, and a hundred questions popped into his head: could the blade be switched out? How was it sharpened? How would he get it past a metal detector- besides the blade, what else was metal? How often did it need to be oiled, and how?

At that moment, the girl he brought home walked out of his shower with nothing but a towel on, smiling playfully. Ricky decided questioning Silver could wait.

Two delinquents stood near the west gate of Mauville City, watching every person that went in and out while trying not to draw attention.

"What about that one?" the first one whispered.

"Nah, she looks a bit too rough- not enough for a good ransom."

"That one?"

"Nah, she looks athletic. Minimum fight, dude."

"Well, what about that little twintails girl?" Amber, the girl he was pointing to, sneezed as if to highlight her in the crowd. "Definitely no parents around, weak-looking..." He let the sentence trail off. His partner nodded and they began walking through the crowd.

---

Amber was strolling through the Route between Mauville and her house near the edge of Verdanturf Town. She hummed a little tune to herself as she peeled the first of the bunch of bananas and began eating it. It was a peaceful day, late Spring, and the heat was just beginning to arrive. Suddenly, Electrike growled.

"Hmm?" she said, stopping. "What is it, boy?" She saw a spark of electricity run through his fur. Something was wrong. She looked around, but didn't see anyone following her- or anyone at all. Her hand reached up to her belt, where Plusle and Minun's Pokeballs were...

She had left them at her house! Damn! All she had was Electrike, and he wasn't the strongest in a battle- he didn't even listen to her all the time. She suddenly felt very exposed.

Electrike began to bark fiercely at the woods behind her. A sinister laugh came out- and Electrike rushed in. A painful crunch sounded as Electrike's unconscious form flew back out.

Amber backed away, but bumped into something. A hand suddenly covering her mouth told her it was a someone instead.

"What a catch!" the guy that held her said, laughing. His partner emerged from the bushes.

"Yeah, and if she doesn't ransom well, I hear there's a great black market for lolis down in Slateport."

Amber struggled against her captor, suddenly furious above all else, but it was in vain.

"Oh, look, she's feisty. They like that, I hear. I wonder if we can charge extra for that."

"We can charge extra for anything! This one alone will net us a nice sum. Apparently, the younger they are, the higher the prices go."

Amber was really going at it now. Bucking, kicking, trying to bite his hand- nothing worked. Then, somehow, she got a lucky strike and smashed her foot down on his toes.

"Ah!" he yelled, loosening his grip enough for her to escape, turn, and kick him in the shins. His partner rushed to his aid, but she ran at him, jumped, and brought her knee hard into his crotch.

"I'm sixteen, damnit! SO WHAT IF I'M VERTICALLY CHALLENGED? I'LL SHOW YOU WHO'S SMALL, YOU BASTARDS!"

He crumpled in pain right away, but his partner had stopped hopping and holding his shin and was coming to aid him. Amber turned and jumped straight up, just managing to reach right above his eye level as she viciously headbutted him. Unfortunately, this had the unexpected side effect of hurting her, too, and when she hit the ground again she clutched her forehead. Her captor, however, lashed out, knocking her to the ground in pain. He then walked over and grabbed her by her two long pigtails, making her grimace in pain.

"Now you listen, girlie," he said venomously, "we were gonna let you go without too much trouble if someone payed for you, but now you're going straight to the black market. And I'll make sure we sell you to the dirtiest, ugliest, most freakish bastard we can find to buy you, and then what we're gonna do isAAAAAAAAHH!"

As her captor crumpled, Amber stood up and saw Electrike, who waddled unsteadily over the the one he had just electrified, turned around, and kicked him in the groin.

"I need a Tazer," she breathed wearily, and Electrike barked in agreement as his cocked his leg near the captor's head.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 2 Up

Yes, you can. Especially since it took me forever to figure out how to explain how it worked.

And less like Ezio's and more like Desmond's, but still.

If the delinquents can't keep ahold of 16-year-old, they're so screwed when the War begins |3

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 2 Up

Was going to post chapter three tomorrow, but I don't know if I'll be able to, so I'm posting it now. I'm also only waiting half a week because the first four chapters are all pretty short.

Chapter Three: Preparations

Ricky lounged on a couch in an otherwise spartan room deep in the Magma tunnel system surrounding Lavaridge. He was in the standard Magma outfit, except his was a dark brown instead of red and black- perfect for stealth missions around the barren Mt. Chimney and Route 111. He had his new blade around his left forearm, and his various other weapons stashed throughout his person. He also had a pair of skiing goggles around his neck to keep sand out of his eyes.

A tiny head popped out of the head and squeaked. "Hey, Diggums," Ricky said. "How many?" The Diglett bobbed twice, and dove back into the earth.

The door opened and Ricky unlocked his blade, always ready. Two grunts walked in, and he relaxed a bit after seeing their faces, matching those of his files. The first was an Asian man, recently turning 20- Ryuu Asakura, a trainer of rare Pokemon. However, he wasn't especially great at getting them, and trained only them. A true otaku, though- he tested every possible strategy his precious Pokemon could employ, and made sure they were always in top condition. His file also have him as having two Dragons, a Flygon and a Gabite, and his only other Pokemon- a Pupitar- was nothing to scoff at.

The other grunt was a boy, only sixteen, and smiling happily. Caleb O'Connor, a boy that practically radiated idealism, hope, loyalty, and all those other positive emotions Ricky was quick to exploit. His team was full of canines, fiercely loyal to the end. Ricky felt a bit of a connection to him, remembering back when he was younger and hadn't been forced into the real world. Ricky just hoped the boy learned some impulse control- he had a record of flipping out, and Ricky hadn't figured out just why yet.

"Greetings," Ryuu said, bowing. "I take it you are Mr. Fowler, our squad leader?"

"Yes," Ricky replied. "Ryuu and Caleb, correct? Passwords?"

"Viridian," Ryuu said.

"Quartz!" Caleb said. "Hiya, Mr. Fowler sir! Nice to meet you!"

Ricky resisted the urge to pat the kid on the head. "Any weapons between you two?"

"I have a knife," Ryuu said, taking out a small blade, "but I've never used it before."

"First, that's a dagger, not a knife- stabbing, not slashing. Second, I'll get you some sparring times. You'd better learn how to fight without relying on your Pokemon if your going to make it on our missions." He looked at Caleb. "And you?"

The boy held out his hand, and Ricky heard a click. A flame shot out about three feet in front of him.

"I got this from some weird guy with white hair," he said. "I asked him where I was suppose to go to meet you and he said he had read my file and gave me this and handed me over to Mister Asakura. He also said to tell you that he was working on a ceramic blade, but he wasn't used to working with it and he was kind of tired. He said you'd know what he meant."

Ricky nodded, surprised that this kid had managed to find Silver. His room was in the middle of nowhere compared to the rest of the base. The kid must have had talent at getting lost. Him also getting something from Silver meant there was something special about him.

"Okay, that leaves us our last member- have either of you seen anyone?"

At that moment, Diggums popped up again and squeaked. Someone was here.

The door opened, and a young woman walked in. Ricky knew her name was Savanah Louise and what she looked like, and that he wasn't to charm her in any fashion because she was somehow related to Maxie. Normally, Ricky wouldn't care if a girl was related to his employer, but apparently Silver was also unusually close to this particular "cousin"- she was the person he always talked to about Maxie being a crappy father, adoptive or not. Silver had said not to do it, and Ricky was going to respect that.

"Password?" She said something too quietly for Ricky to hear. "Excuse me?"

"I-I said Millions. Uncle- I mean, Sir Maxie's last name."

Ricky nodded. "Don't be so scared. We're here for meet and greet. Do you have any weapons, or anything to defend yourself with?"

She nodded unsurely, the again more fiercely. "K-Krav Maga," she said.

Ricky almost checked his ears to make sure he had heard correctly. This girl, who didn't look like she could harm a fly, knew what was considered one of the deadliest fighting styles on the planet. He suspected that Maxie was a reason she had learned it- he wanted to be sure he had no weak points.

"And your team?" he asked. "Your file was restricted access, unlike theirs."

"Grass types," she said. "M-my main fighter is a Torterra."

He nodded. "Alright, then," he said as he got up off the couch and stretched. "We're going to be a special ops team- as of right now, we are not part of Team Magma, the operation. We are a part of Team Magma the ideal, though- I take orders direct from Maxie or his son, Silver. You're going to go through a few weeks of intense training- concealment, self-defense, and some weapons training. After that, we'll start recieving missions. You will hear these missions from me, and you will listen to everything I tell you. Under my command, you will each become spies, assassins... you will be seen only when you want to be seen, heard only when you want to be heard. You will know everything about the people around you, and the terrain, as well. You will be prepared for everything, and you will be one of the few elite among Team Magma to resemble that which our uniforms mimic- the legendary ninjas."

Ricky smiled. "First lesson: always be aware of your surroundings." As he said this, his three subordinates sunk into the ground up to their waists as Diggums turned the ground into sand.

Antoinette trudged through the mist covering Mt. Pyre, followed by her squad. They were in the area with the most recent graves, and she didn't like being there- she knew some of the dead that rested here, both Pokemon and human.

"What's wrong, Annie?" Rex asked snidely. She resisted the urge to punch him- she didn't want to disrespect the dead.

"I know some of the dead."

Rex laughed. "I know many of these dead. A lot more than you. I'm the reason most of the ones I know are here."

Alden kicked him. "Shut up, you little prick. Let the dead have their rest."

"Stop," Antoinette said. "While we're here, I'm going to go visit some graves. You may do the same, but be back in ten minutes. After that, we head to the summit, get the info we came here for, and leave. Dismissed. Oh, and Rex," she said, releasing Dauphine, her Weavile, "Dauphine here is going to follow you, and if you piss on any graves, I'll personally ensure you won't be able to again."

With that, she left them, heading to a pair of graves near the back, with the other tsunami victims from six years ago. Removing a rose from her pack, she set it between them.

"Parents?"

Antoinette spun around, grabbing her kris from her waist and preparing to defend herself. However, it was only Donovan.

"No," she said, relaxing a little, but not resheathing the blade. "But almost. They were the parents of a close, close friend. I was actually living with them six years ago, but was on a cruise when the tsunami hit. My friend and I were okay, at least physically, but they died. I didn't know until we got back, actually- he didn't tell me so I could enjoy the cruise... the cruise that had been my idea. I'd always wanted to travel, and I convinced him to take me on the trip... saved our lives... and he lost his parents." She shook her head. "I never got to talk to him after I found out. He left Lilycove right away, but I stayed, since he left me the house. He wanted it that way... he was always thinking of me. In the note he left at the house, he asked me to stay and take care of it so he could come back one day." She slumped her shoulders. "Of course, this doesn't matter to you."

"No, it's okay," Donovan said. "I have a good friend that lost his family, too. Haven't seen him in a year or two, since I joined Team Aqua, but... well, after the tsunami, he was never quite the same. However, I can't find their graves, so I guess I'll just leave my flowers on your friend's parent's graves instead." He took out a sunflower and placed it next to Antoinette's rose. "Now, let's head back, Sergeant."

Antoinette nodded and headed back, and Donovan followed her after a few seconds.

So, he thought to himself, she's the girl he talked about.

---

The squad of Aquas reached the summit of Mt. Pyre soon afterwards. Antoinette walked to the door of the plain house nearby and knocked on the door a few times.

"One minute!" said an old woman from within. Footsteps muffled by slippers made their way to the door. Creaking as it opened, the door revealed an ancient woman. "Yes?"

"We are members of Team Aqua," Antoinette began, "here to inquire-"

"The Orbs, yes, yes. It's all about the Orbs. Nobody ever comes to say hello to Granny except Phoebe. Everyone else is either interested in world domination or asking for money. Well, I don't have either of them."

"Then could I ask-"

"They're in Ever Grande, beneath the Hall of Fame. Good luck getting there, girlie."

"Then-"

"And besides that, Kyogre and Groudon didn't wake up last time for you crazies, why would they now?"

Antoinette was getting rather annoyed. This old woman needed to learn to shut up.

"B-"

"Maybe it's the whole 'pure of heart' clause all those ancient prophecies have, and I can garuntee that you crazies-"

Rex started laughing loudly. "Old woman, I'm the only crazy one here. The others are just weak, and you're just stupid. Now-" he took one of his climbing axes from his belt- "you can either stop being an annoying old lady and listen and answer our questions, or you can stop being an annoying old lady and become a corpse."

The old woman gulped.

"Thank you, Rex," Antoinette said, then turned to the old woman. "Now, you will tell us about the connection between the Orbs and Kyogre and Groudon."

"Well," the old lady said, "for quite some time they were thought to be some kind of crystallized soul. However, in light of recent events, they function as more of an... alarm clock. They seem to store energy- the Blue Orb from the sea currents and the Red orb from tectonic activity- and release it into the duo when in close proximity. Either Orb can actually awaken either being, but the Red Orb will only agitate Kyogre and vice-versa, while the Blue Orb would actually enhance Kyogre's already immense power."

"I see. Now, where are they?"

"I already told you," the old woman retorted. "They're underneath the Hall of Fame-"

"No, they aren't." Antoinette drew her kris, its wavy blade catching a beam of light through the fog and shining brightly for a moment. "No fool would put both of them together, because alone they can cause catastrophe, but if both being were awakened simultaneously..." She let the sentence trail off. Everyone was aware of the pure destructive power Kyogre and Groudon possessed.

"I-I don't know exactly where," the old woman said. "I handed them over- Steven took the Red Orb and Wallace the Blue Orb. However, Phoebe tells me Drake took the Blue Orb soon after, not trusting Wallace with it. Neither of them would put it anywhere anyone else could find it, I assure you."

"Very well." Antoinette resheathed the blade and turned. "Come on, guys. We're heading back to report our findings."

Rex... whined, almost, like a dog. "But, can I-"

"Not now, Rex. But if the mission for her death comes through, I'll recommend you."

Hunter Returner soared over the ocean on what resembled a cloud, supported on it by whirling ice. On his back perched a sleeping Crobat, ready to catch him if he fell on his voyage to Ever Grande City to challenge the Elite Four. He was something of a legend, coming to Hoenn from a far away land, not even knowing the language, and conquering the eight gyms in less than three months with his odd Pokemon, and adding to his powerful collection along the way.

"There it be, Nimbus," he said to the cloud in the language he was still trying to perfect speaking. "Lay us down on the nothern half of the island. We shall begin to fight the Elite Four soon."

As the cloud and Hunter landed, the cloud rose up and revealed itself as a Castform. "Nimbus, Fang- return." The Crobat and Castform glowed red and disappeared. Hunter then said something in an odd language, and a Braviary appeared. He said some more, and it took to the sky, squacking.

Hunter smiled. He would prove himself here.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 3 Up

Hunter Returner, who is he? You now have my curiousity as well as my attention =3

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 3 Up

I'd like to say that's the most blatant bump ever :p

Except maybe this.

*important stuff*- I've already finished Chapter 4 (once again, I have a lot of time and the first ~4 chapters are all about the same short-ish size), and I'm planning Chapter 5, where really important stuff starts happening en masse.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 3 Up

Very impressive start, SI, I'm sorry I missed this until now. I really enjoy Ricky as a character. I'm not familiar with the RP that you apparently base him off of, but he is a very enjoyable character thus far.

I especially how you set up the story with the first chapter. Your style is very pleasing to read; I can't explain exactly what it is, but yes, I'm going to be following this.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 3 Up

Like I said, you don't need to be familiar with any of this fic's predecessors, since I have changed some things and I intend to fully flesh out all the characters as I would any other story.

Also, thanks for the review, Legs. Glad you like it.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 3 Up

Just read all three chapters. I shall be following from now on, keep it up :3

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 3 Up

Thanks. Like I said, there's going to be a new chapter up tomorrow, and then I'll update every Wednesday because the chapters will start getting longer.

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 3 Up

You guys know that think where I said every Wednesday? I lied, because the forums decided to intervene with that schedule. I have to get to editing chapter five, now, because in my stroke of brilliance, I saved my drafts in a blog that was unreachable until now. Yeah.

Also, for the record, I use Return skin, which now has black text against a black background. New skin, ahoy!

Ch. 4: And So We Go

Savannah bent over and gasped for breath, sweating heavily from having just run fifteen miles. Caleb was a bit behind her, and she hadn't even seen Ryuu since a few minutes in.

She quickly glanced around the room Ricky had chosen for the training excercise today. It was an independant excercise, he had said, and if someone stopped to help their teammates they would both be penalized.

She released a Roserade from her Pokeball and motioned for her to check the ground for any of Ricky's traps while she caught her breath. Roserade released tendrils into the ground, probing for anything suspicious, but nodded her head- it was safe. Savanah recalled her and walked further in to check the room more thoroughly.

A small click registered and she jumped backwards, her legs burning from the strain. Ricky's Infernape, Blaze crashed through the air vent in the ceiling and screeched as it dashed at her.

Savanah almost sighed. She was lucky- Infernape were strong, to be sure, but had similar physiology as humans, and she was used to hand-to-hand combat with humans.

A flaming fist flew at her and she focused on her training, feeling the pain drain away as adrenaline rushed through her body. She sidestepped to her left and shoved the Infernape's forearm away, avoiding the flaming hand. She also punched with her left hand to Infernape's forehead while bringing her left leg to the back of Infernape's left knee.

However, the Infernape saw it coming and dropped straight down, whipping at her ankles with its long tail. She wasn't able to react in time and felt the stinging blow, nearly losing her balance. She quickly stomped on it, however, and the Infernape shrieked in pain and anger, jumping at her. While it was in midair, Savanah grabbed the Infernape's left arm as she sidestepped the full force of the blow, using all her momentum to twist it backwards. The Infernape's right arm swung wildly back to strike at her, and she let go, making the Infernape spin, unbalanced. She quickly brought the heel of both her palms into its chin, lifting it off the ground slightly and knocking it out.

She quickly knocked all six of her Pokeballs from her belt, releasing her team of Grass types to encircle her and defend against whatever secondary attack might come- Torterra, Cherrim, Roserade, Tropius, Jumpluff, and Breloom all appeared and assumed fighting stances.

A static crackle sounded as a hidden loudspeaker came on. "Good job." It was Ricky's voice. "I can see you've been trained well- I won't have Infernape go easy on you next time. You can go rest, now."

She sighed and motioned for Tropius to put her on Torterra's back so she could rest. It was like her Krav Maga training with Silver all over again.

---

Caleb was leaning against a tunnel wall. He didn't know the last time he had been this tired. His vision was getting dotty, and Savanah had left him in the dust a while back- the girl was fit, even though she looked like a stereotypical shy girl.

He ran a hand through his messy blonde hair while he contemplated getting back up. Maybe he could ride on Arcanine's back?

Suddenly he felt the sadly familiar feeling of the ground beneath him turning to quicksand.

"Damn it," he moaned. "Flareon, use Dig and get that annoying Diglett to stop."

Flareon's familiar mane of fire-like hair appeared beside him and began to dig into the ground, ready to fight the Pokemon who had caused it no end of trouble over the past few weeks.

Of course, as per Ricky's M.O. of putting his squad through the most hair-pulling experience possible, Blade, Ricky's Scyther, flashed by at that moment, striking at Flareon and dashing away before it could counterattack. Caleb released his Arcanine, the only Pokemon between Ryuu, Savanah, and Caleb that could catch Blade to deal with it. Blade shot off into the tunnel, and Arcanine chased after it with Extremespeed.

Caleb's legs had now sunk below the quicksand, but he wasn't too worried. He didn't have enough energy to attempt to get out, and struggling would only make him sink faster. Flareon was already underground, probably searching for Diggums's tunnels.

Caleb decided it would be a good time for a nap.

---

Ricky lifted his finger from the intercom button and turned back to Silver.

"So tell me, again, why, even though they're on my team, I can't access their files?"

"Savanah's classified because she's connected to Maxie," Silver said, fiddling with something with a lot of screws and bolts. "That's pretty simple. Ryuu's not classified, that's just all we have on him."

"You mean you put an unknown in my squad?" Ricky asked angrily.

"No... not quite." Silver tapped his chin, searching for the way he was going to explain. "You could say that everything we have is everything everyone has about him- that is everything."

"You're saying that all we have is his name, his team, and an approxomate age- and that that's all he is?"

"Well, that and this." Silver pulled out a leatherbound book and handed it to Ricky. "It's a copy, but it's all confirmed."

Ricky glanced at the cover. "His journal?" He gave an odd look at Silver, then shook his head. "Whatever. I'll read it later. What about the kid?"

"The kid's information was being verified until recently. His dad was actually the one that filled out most of the forms, even the ones the kid was able to. We had to do some serious referencing to hospitals across Sinnoh. Instead of waiting for you to get the packet anyway, I'll give you the Cliff Notes version; he was caught in an icestorm, big one, with his mom and dad. He was separated, but got out more or less okay. His dad lost his arm, his mom died- starvation, though, not cold. The kid goes catatonic if you ask him about it, and he flips out around Ice types. That lighter I gave him is better suited to survival than fighting, but it's useful either way- I just felt a bit of connection to him, you know?"

Ricky nodded. He remembered when Silver had told him about his past. He had been found floating in the ocean as a baby, barely a few months old, and adopted by Maxie when he was three. Apparently, Maxie had actually been a benevolent person back then, before he became a fanatic. That was twenty years ago, though.

"So I get to take a nobody, a big target, and a kid and turn them into a crack team of superninjas?"

"Hey," Silver said, smiling. "It worked with us and Johnnie."

"That it did. A techie, a player, and a mimic, all orphans, now badasses."

***

It was Antoinette's day off again, and she was spending it shopping. She wasn't going to visit the island for a while- she went there to be alone, and Archie definately had it under surviellance.

Also, the Lilycove Department Store was having one of its legendary rare sales.

Currently she was walking back to her house to drop off another set of bags, the third that day. She could only carry so much, after all, and she figured it would be frowned upon to call upon grunts to carry her shopping.

She started back towards the store, and her thoughts drifted. Food prices were getting really high, she had noticed- the crop failures were real. What was worse, there had been lots of nasty storms around Hoenn, and trade had been slow because of it- there were talks of bad food shortages in the western valley towns. Apparently there had even been a riot in Petalburg. Things were grim, but she felt safe. She was an officer in Team Aqua, what could go wrong?

A massive explosion blew out the lower floors of the Lilycove Department Store a few blocks away. The shockwave shoved Antoinette to her feet.

Hands grabbed at her shoulders, and a grunt pulled her up and handed her a rifle- wait, Archie was at least mindful of the gun ban and didn't make it obvious he was smuggling. Why-

Her brain slowly put two and two together. Shit had just hit the fan. A terrorist attack, with the food tension, heralded horrible things.

Antoinette's ears stopped ringing, and she started shouting commands. She didn't hear herself, though- she was just aware of telling everybody to get away from the building as she ran closer, trying to evacuate, waving her rifle around to get people to listen. She was aware of sirens blaring over the loudspeakers across the city, of people running and screaming, of everything around her- but it was all like a dream, surreal, impossible.

Then the building collapsed.

***

Amber stared at the news report, frozen. It couldn't be true, could it? Someone bombed the department store? It wasn't possible, was it?

Then the scene on the television changed to show Archie, the most wanted man in Hoenn and leader of Team Aqua.

"People of Hoenn!" he yelled. "We of Team Aqua will not stand for this atrocity! We will find whoever is behind this and crush them! However, we will need the help of you, people of Hoenn- we have already occupied the city of Lilycove and are aiding its citizens now, and island cities are joining our ranks quickly. We promise to use whatever means necessary to find the culprit and bring them to justice!"

The screen suddenly went static, and Archie's image was replaced by Maxie. "Good citizens of Hoenn, I urge you not to listen to the ravings of a madman like Archie. He is a criminal and will betray your trust. The members of Team Magma are pursuing agreements with cities about allied defense if Aqua attacks, and, once again, we urge you to dismiss Archie."

Amber wasn't quite sure what was going on. Thousands of people had just died, and the two major groups of Hoenn were already in a political battle over it.

Suddenly, her door slammed open.

"Amber, dear?" Wattson called. "Did you see the news?" She nodded numbly. She had friends in Lilycove, she needed to make sure they were okay, and-

"Amber, dear, you need to come with me. We're setting up New Mauville, the underground. It's going to be a base, like an underground city... it's going to be a safe zone. There's going to be fighting, I can tell. We need to get to safety before that happens."

"Fighting?" Amber said it, but she only heard her voice saying it. She felt lost.

"Yes. Amber, dear, I can already tell- there's going to be a war."

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 4 Up

Whoo, the Hoenn Wars are beginning. Hide the women and children...then again, they aren't gonna be much safer with the Kanjo blockade =P

Re: Hoenn Wars (A Travelsverse Fic) Ch. 4 Up

Okay, a few author's notes:

1: There is a thread in the Atlas now, with all the information known up until this point there. Go have fun.

2: I should warn you guys, I often quiz Instru over VMs with questions about how the Travelsverse works, since I'm a big stickler for continuity, and, really, this is his playground and not mine. This can range from how certain attacks work to how to blow something up to asking if the mechanics behind a hairbrained scheme I've cooked up will work. They generally don't contain major spoilers, but often hint to ideas I have planned for down the road. This means that if you look at our conversations, you may get a spoiled. Any explicit spoilers I ask him about go through PMs, though.

3: As the war has officially started, the next chapter is when I'll start actually asking reviewers to come in and check out the story so far, since it contains actual fight scenes, which I'm not sure I'm all that great at.

4: bump Profit!
