No need to, it's not like it's a prequel or anything. Any connections between the two are more or less references that new readers don't need to know to understand the story, while older readers can nod their heads at them.@Eliza Prescott: well I can't say I have read storm Island yet
Yep!I take it that unknown pokémon was Blastcap's evolution.
Something you'll begin to notice with my writing is how 'pseudo-everything' it is. I tend to base my ideas off of vague concepts rather than look up detailed articles about the subject in question and Blastcap was no different. 'White Pox' was just a name I came up with on the fly as it visually described what was happening with the Miltank herd. As far as inspiration for Blastcap, I looked primarily at lichen in terms of structure, and sphaerobolus stellatus, commonly known as the artillery fungus, was the basis for the core mushroom that releases the toxic spores into the environment. Also the only 'White Pox' that I found was to do with coral reefs so that begs the question what sort of fungi is Blastcap based off of?
My best guess is Myrtle rust (Uredo rangelii) although I could be way off, or perhaps it has characteristics of a lot of different invasive fungi.
Thank you for reading, by the way!
Edit: one last thought, in regards to the story focusing on environmental research... I'm not sure that it will. While she has experience with it and it happened to be her first project, she's going to be thrown into all sorts of situations and asked to deal with subjects she doesn't have a lot of experience with. A few other plots will pop up from time to time focusing on the environment, but they will not be the main focus of her travels.
