I think "geek" is a nicer synonym for it, since I usually hear nerd thrown around as an insult more than geek.

I thought that a nerd is someone who knows a lot in terms of things like science and math, while geeks are those immersed in the (completely awesome) realm of science fiction/fantasy and have good knowledge in that respect. But I do believe there is a lot of intersection between the two. I'm probably somewhere in that overlap.
