I didnt hate it at first but after rewatching the trailer, I am SO disappointed by the art style. I can't complain about the animation but the cartoonish style doesn't cut it for me. I don't like it. I can't help but wonder if this is the beginning of the end for this anime and this is why they're making such big changes.
There's no way the anime is on its way out, especially since Pokémon is probably more popular now than it has been since the year 2000.

I'm glad that the japanese also find this trailer bad enough to prompt Ash's VA to respond.

There's a much higher chance of production giving a fuck about this then.

I'm actually surprised at the number of people who are so attached to Ash's appearance. Ash looks different rendered is a different style but he still has the same hair colour, hair style, eye colour, facial features, skin tone, voice, and pet rat glued to his shoulder - as in, the things that made his design distinctive in the first place are still present. Frankly, I don't see why a slight shortening of the hair, or him having smaller eyes, is such a huge deal.

Also, and this is a genuine question, when people say the new style looks "cartoony", are they implying that current style isn't?

At the core, these are the things that make Ash... well Ash. But Ash is also known to have a very sharp outline defining his features (something he inherited from the 90s) and every outfit he wore over the past 19 years have a consistent set of wardrobe: Hat, Fingerless Gloves, Jacket and Long Jeans. This Alola Ash is missing three of four iconic clothing. Add to the fact that the design make Ash's eyes smaller and his features rounder, it comes off as a new incarnation of Ash (as in an AU fanverse Ash) than the Ash we follow since the original series.

What I don't get about people pointing out the clothes... Alola presumably has a similar climate to Hawaii. It kinda makes sense that Ash would dress lighter than other regions? No gloves, no jacket, no long pants.
Yeah since Ash would get hot wearing a jacket, black gloves, and long pants.

No jacket or long pants makes sense due to the climate, but not gloves is more of a surprise. I doubt that would make him that much warmer than usual. Although, I didn't really notice it until someone pointed it out, but small details like that normally go pass me at first anyway.

I suppose the type specialist companion would catch a pokemon that is not their specialty again. I am kind of against this because the whole point of type specialists is to own a team of the type that you prefer. So far, all the companions that are type specialists have failed at this.

The art style has definitely grown on me but I'll have to wait until I see a few episodes before I decide if I like it. Especially because it's so jarring watching this then going back to XY, huge contrast.

My hope is that since they went for a simpler style this time the animation itself will stay consistently fluid. And it looks like the characters are easier to draw so maybe they'll be off-model less? I hope we get a longer trailer soon, this teaser was nice but I have more questions than I did before I saw it :s

Personally, I was never fond of the idea of Ash wearing the Sun and Moon clothes mainly on how plain it looks on Ash. But I can see Ash having to wear a T-shirt and shorts this time. But like Hidden Mew said, the gloves come off as a big surprise since he doesn't need to lose them in the first place.

But the reason I brought about his iconic wardrobe format is that with three pieces absent plus the softer redesign of Ash's face, you end up with an Ash that looks almost completely different from XY&Z counterpart. And not in a gradual evolutionary way, but in a sudden shift of design. It's made worse the preview came just after XY&Z showcases Ash at his best animation glory in the movie special. And when you have a nearly different Ash instead of a slightly altered Ash of XY&Z, it raises the question of whether or not the original Ash is worth keeping around.

Yeah, I gotta agree, with the crisp, high quality of the XY&Z animation, the marginally sloppier Sun&Moon animation is particularly jarring. I have some hopes for it, because it does seem to look a lot like various anime movies such as the Digimon movie and some of Studio Ghibli's work, and I love to watch the movement in those. But I gotta say, the faces are going to be awful bland to look at by comparison.

I have seen pictures comparing the XY Ash and SM Ash already and they do look pretty significantly different, so I can understand the jarring sensation people get in that regard. Plus, with how much praise XY has gotten for its animation, especially during the past couple of months, something like a drastically different art style would probably create red flags for some people. I still kind of like it. I didn't notice it at first, but there are some shots where you can see Pikachu actually has fur. That's a nice detail.

One other thing about the outfit is that aside from the hat and maybe the shoes, it is kind of too similar to the male trainer's default outfit. It makes sense in a marketing sense and in regards to Ash not getting too hot in a warmer climate, but it does lack more of the unique twist they usually give Ash's new outfit. His outfits are always based on the new male trainer's outfit, but they're usually not nearly the same thing, so that's a bit odd, especially when I find the male trainer's default outfit to be too bland and generic. It will probably grow on me after awhile though.

The games perhaps but the anime kind of shot itself in the foot with XYZ and now apparently this ( according to the Japanese reception ) I don't mind the change personally but their main market does

To be fair, the backlash for bot the Kalos League and the SM trailer probably wasn't from the target demographic. I think it's more from the older fanbase, especially with the Kalos League, so I don't know if it's accurate to say that their main market has a problem with these changes.

That's true but TPC cares what Japan thinks in general.
The West may be making fun of the new SM anime but the Japanese fans are doing the most ( Especially on Twitter )

I keep forgetting to mention it, but I think it's interesting how they're having Pikachu also do the Gigavolt Havoc pose as Ash does it. I wonder if more Pokemon will do this or if it'll only be Pikachu. Hopefully others will as well, so long as they're not to complicated and the Pokemon has the appropriate limbs. I could see Rowlet and even Popplio to a lesser extent doing the poses for Bloom Doom and Hydro Vortex respectively.

Actually, with that in mind, I wonder if this'll only be for Gigavolt Havoc with Pikachu or if he'll also do the normal Z-Move pose for Quick Attack and the steel one for Iron Tail. Man this is already getting interesting:p. Even though I'm still not too fond of the new art style, I just want to see more Z-Moves in action.

OK, now with the anime on it's way and with the new Z-Move system on it's way, expect a few JoJo references coming up for the next few months during all the posing done with the Z-Moves

This is going to be the worst thing ever... what the hell is that new design for Ash

There was a tweet from Rica Matsumoto that has her talking about the various designs of Ash in this thread. Based on the translations, she's defending the Sun and Moon Ash, saying they are the same person. Clearly, something must have caused a stir at the Japanese side of Twitter.
