  • Oh, I didn't explain myself well. I didn't mean a pair release of two versions. I meant Grey releasing on both DS and 3DS with the latter version having a few gimmicky additions (it's obvious how the 3D feature would be implemented in the battles). Yes, that doesn't even begin to help with how problematic Grey would be. But indeed, it's probably just Mystery Dungeon 4, which is just so underwhelming.

Wii wasn't a disappointment, but they made it last longer than it should have lasted. When there is no third-party support (for the reasonable reason that its tech is old), you have to switch to a new platform. Arguably, Nintendo continued showing in-house support instead of releasing a new system sooner than later (which to gamers that also owned a PS3/360 was a good thing -- multiplatform titles has little value in this case). The blame for Pokémon's situation is to be put in Genius Sonority. I can feel for them being pressed to deliver PBR fast which resulted in them scrapping the (even small, I would still be happy) story it had -- but no one forced them to make Tinker Bell, Keyboard typing games and whatever the hell they've been doing the last four years.

The team was assembled in order to make Pokémon RPGs for consoles in first place. So, let me ask: why didn't they?
I have doubted about how much support DS would receive from now on, but thinking the few months back as well as Nintendo in E3, I found out that support continues. There are a few major third party DS games that were announced only weeks ago, and Nintendo in E3 presented their future strategy of including four consoles; DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U. They also continued localizing unlocalized DS games. If there was another main game coming on DS, this would be no doubt Grey, and if Grey could have a double release in both DS and 3DS, that's even more believable.

Just to clear out myself, I'm not saying that Grey is more possible than MD4 -- in fact, I believe it to be the other way round. But this thought of a double release (in combination to the raising chances Grey has to release) stroke me, and I thought I would mention it. The two games could also well be unrelated; Grey on DS, a spin-off on 3DS -- a spin-off on DS, Grey on 3DS -- two different spin-offs on DS and 3DS. But to be honest, if another game is coming on DS, it most certainly is not something they would want to keep exclusive on that platform.
Pokemon Co. CEO Hints at New Pokemon Game

I don't know if I should first make a comment that would imply that the Wii RPG was probably canceled or say that Grey seems very close now. I'm almost certain about the first one, and although with not as much confidence, I can't say that Grey is impossible.

I wish I could be proven wrong, but this is a comment with the magnitude of Iwata's comment earlier this year. It seems to be accounting for the incoming Pokémon releases, and there's no mention of the Wii game Iwata announced earlier this year -- the same game we've been waiting to see for months now. Best case scenario, it was moved on Wii U, which will have us wait a few more months (you'd expect that releasing it on the launch window is very possible, if not even the reason the delay was made). Worst case scenario, we are speaking of the third Pokémon RPG to be canceled or very much altered (even without proof that it was an RPG). In any case, time will show.

Games on both 3DS and DS? That's very surprising... You could no doubt say that this could refer to spin-offs, especially since "Pokemon Co. has things in the works that will surprise players at the same level as in the first half of the year", which wasn't very... surprising. What also comes into play is the fact that he speaks of both DS and 3DS, which could lead anyone with a bit sense of rationale (and history) believe that a new Mystery Dungeon is coming. That's, to be honest, more possible than Grey. But for Ishihara (who is often involved in even directing Game Freak games) to say this in a time like this, there's are many more doors opening.
I suppose they could still give it a go with a similar game to X related to Black and White (which would also act as a third version in many ways), although I was hoping that this part would be fulfilled by the console RPG. In any case, I can still see the Sinjoh follow up be that game, even without those supposed "new" Pokémon already existing hidden within Black and White. It would technically be Generation 5.5, and those Pokémon could later join the rest of new monsters in Generation VI (a good way of not introducing over 150 new monsters all at once). If Wii RPG released in winter 2011 and this followed in fall 2012, leaving Generation VI for fall 2013, it would be the best case scenario for me -- it's of course, very, very unlikely that this happens.

By the way, to clear myself out. Previously, I meant to say "I wasn't saying that they were motivated by greed with Black and White.". I mistyped "I was saying [...]", instead of wasn't. :p
Generation V lasting for up to 2013 would not be an unnecessary extension, but a normal time for a Pokémon generation. The problem is that a Game Freak Pokémon title for 2012 is almost definite. If the choice between Generation VI and Grey was up to me, I would be brought to a very big dilemma, although I think I would eventually choose the former, gun on head. But the best case scenario would be what you called exactly.

A new game with a few new Pokémon, new tech, and but still something that wouldn't be called Generation VI. Sort of a prologue to what would follow. I think this would be the perfect environment for a game like Pokémon X or the Sinjoh follow up, on that the region would contain Pokémon from both Kanto/Johto and Sinnoh, as well a couple dozen of new ones. Tech would be something like what Diamond and Pearl are to the eventual Black and White -- or maybe much more than that; an experiment in perspective, 3D graphics and battle presentations. Something that would test "what works", and what would eventually be adapted for Generation VI (in, say, a European-based region!), a really good bridge between Generation V and Generation VI that would give so many options in that it will not be the titled that would be named "Pocket Monsters 6".

Don't see this as simply an experimental game -- it would be incredibly interesting and unique and would help the future games in a lot of ways. What do you think about this? Would you be satisfied with this treatment for probably your most awaited Pokémon arc?
I agree completely about the anime. I hadn't thought of what you said about Ash's experience being shown by establishing that Trip isn't much of threat to him compared to N. I, on the other hand, associate N better with Zekrom. N has a more gentle flow in him, so, I like the contrast he makes with Zekrom. That said, I wouldn't mind any case. Both make sense, after all. Let's not forget that Ash is already associated with Zekrom of course, so, you could say that if N appeared, he'd most likely use Reshiram. I hope that it will be the other way round in Special.

I confess though that I do find it a bit awkward that Ash assumes the roles of other protagonists, more because it makes me wonder what their counterparts are doing in the anime universe. At least we can assume that Ethan had his way against probably Archer and Ariana (and to be more in the matter, there were also Attila and Hun). There were several admins that didn't appear in AG as well, so, Brendan may have encountered them. (I confess that I haven't watched AG and DP finales, so, I'm not sure).

I wasn't saying that they were motivated by greed with Black and White. It was a personal annoyance that I was dealing with because (at the time) I would have preferred them to be on DS's successor. But now I clearly see that this not only gave one of the best DS titles (which DS, trust me, had already an extremely good library), but also was a big treat to the already huge audience that had purchased the console. Plus; they evolved the game both artistically and technologically to cope with the fact that there were already two Pokémon titles for DS -- and they did it well.
Yes, I forgot the Red/Blue Orbs at HG/SS. So yeah, it only makes sense unless R/S/E happens several thousand years after HG/SS, which I find... unlikely. So, R/S happened before HG/SS.

And finally I can see something that I can actually agree on being viable for RS and FRLG happen at the same time, or at least very close.
I guess that science and art resigning in the name of money is not a new thing. I was taken aback by Black and White on DS. The 3DS announcement was just on the corner back then, and I never expected Generation V to debut on a console that would soon be succeed. I was bittersweet about that at first, but they were absolutely gentlemen about what they offered. I think that BW are the best thing that happened in Masuda direction. I don't want to prejudge before even seeing the game announced, but I'm afraid that a potential Grey will go and decrease the value of what was established.

Emerald was a perfect choice as a third version, and Platinum wasn't half bad (in that Diamond and Pearl was sort of like Ruby and Sapphire). But for Black and White; no. I'm trying to think of a way that a third version could work. Maybe while asking you about gender, name, and the rest, it could as well make you wonder what you value most; your ideals or the truth. But would they do that? I kind of doubt it. Best case scenario is that you still either get to obtain either the Dark or the Light Stone -- but in the end Kyurem would still appear and ruin the climax of Black and White. Not to mention that the whole world would be neutralized. Expect to see a White City (snap!)/Black Forest situation, and I don't even want to think what will happen to Opelucid City and N's character...
To stay on one phrase: "It is also possible that they're simply bothered by the fact that they would have to canonize N's legendary partner [...].". Is this why you think anime would ruin B&W's plot? I wouldn't mind anime making an (educated?) guess on who N's partner could be. Special will probably do that (if a neutralizing third version does not arrive), and this is much like choosing a starter Pokémon for the heroes. Red from Special has a Bulbasaur, Zensho's Red has a Charmander -- I think there's even a (less known) manga where Red chooses Squirtle as his starter Pokémon. Those are all possibilities, and unless a game comes to support this, they will remain so -- possibilities. Thankfully, such a game will not come.

So, I won't mind if they simply choose either Reshiram or Zekrom as N's partner. I may say that I hope that Special's and Anime's choices will differ.

I'm more and more worried about Grey being released as time passes. Another major 3DS game was canceled today. As it goes, Nintendo is being forced to give a break on their effort of giving third party developers a chance. That's both surprising and worrying. DS had equal first and third party support -- 3DS seems to have even less (incoming!) third party support than Wii, and it hasn't been out for even half a year. Unless Game Freak rushes on Generation VI (arguably; you may say that two years isn't rushing when it comes to development, but traditionally, it is) I can see Grey on the corner. But you can be sure that one of them is definitely coming next year on 3DS.
I have discussed that with other friends previously -- N would most definitely not fit to be an anime character for many reasons. This alone makes me want to see him on the animation, as you realize. He's a character that feels very weird even throughout the game. His rivalry to Hilbert/Hilda is not something pre-determined, but one occurrence that ends up being once N realizes how similar (due to their edgy contrast) he and the protagonist are. That said; N is not the "bad guy"; that title goes to Ghetsis. Trip is very much more like Cheren, indeed.

If N was to appear in the anime, I'd prefer him to treat Ash as he treated Hilbert/Hilda instead of clearly be a rival to him -- I mean: he can't replace Trip. In practicality, we completely agree that N would give a different taste on the anime; just placing it differently. But where is the anime plot going anyway? Team Plasma hasn't even appeared yet -- and after what happened I may raise the question: will they? It was going (relatively) great until BW22, but from what I understand (although I haven't followed the show since the said episode), it has now switched to the good (trying to be funny), old DP style.
You mentioned the Ruby and Sapphire being stuff that is not really related to anything. :p As I feel it's not related to the topic itself, I decided to ask it directly here: Bulbapedia states more or less the same thing, but what I'm wondering, is that where was the info released, as the in-game texts cannot be deciphered to mean that.
Meloetta's forms are quite different than other Pokémon's forms. I mean, it's not as if Meloetta has a "basic" form and a "special" form -- Meloetta's ones are equally interchangeable. What I was wondering about is if it should have had other forms to represent the other muses. But no, that would be too complicated and there never needs for real-world legends to be precisely adapted.

No, the Unown theory is actually very good. I just wish we had more information on the myth so that we could give it more thought. The Sevii Islands should no doubt reappear. I want to see them in a different time sometime. I wonder if they could be used on the Sinjoh story. For example, a quest could involve going to Unown Colonies, collect an item or something. But that would make it complicated, since there are probably colonies in too many places (including the Solaceon Ruins). Well, still, there surely is a way to excuse themselves and include Sevii Islands in the game.
I found something. Apparently, it's not a common thing -- but most importantly, it has happened once in the history! If that's not the case with Mt. Ember and the Cinabar Volcano, this still is a very interesting idea for a future concept. :p
That leaves Genesect... The way I see it, Genesect will be on M16 along with a Gen VI Pokémon. I wonder if it can indeed be a case of the Generation VI (like with obtaining a new form). I wouldn't mind that, although to be honest it wouldn't make me crazy either.

When it comes to the Sevii Islands, I expected to hear about them in HGSS, but I didn't. I find them a great region for its size and role. They were absolutely on par with Kanto and gave a nice, fresh feeling to FRLG. I also always sort of thought them as a region where Leaf had a big adventure. I didn't find Red's one bad either, though. More like a side-adventure that served well as one story of what Red did after the main events, than anything else.

I don't think Unown... or anyone at all literally created the islands. This 'Seven Days' myth is in my opinion, much like many other Legends, symbolical ways to describe the essence of an event with more likely than not had a metaphysical occurrence or a metaphorical sense. Whether or not Unown were involved in this myth is arguable, but I personally don't like attributing every single event of the Pokémon World to the Creation Legend and/or the Unown. Not that it is impossible, but there certainly are other theories that could be believed for a legend we know so few about.

I'm not an expert in geology, but is it a common (or at least, possible) occurrence that a chain reaction can happen between close volcanoes? That's a particularly interesting theory, although I suppose that we would have heard from Kanto or Johto people if a real big catastrophe had happened. On a related note, I like how Moltres is the one bird which always chooses different locations!
Good to hear that we have insight on what to expect from the next movie. You know, this could also mean that a third version is coming (hence the teaser was less insightful than usual), but let's speak with what we have. I don't know if there should exist another Dual feature. It's excusable once, with this whole contrast theme, but to happen again for no good reason would degrade the value of the double M14. Now; I know they didn't do it for any artistic purpose... but it still sounds silly to me for them to make a tradition out of this occasion.

I don't think the Kami Trio will be the stars of the movie, so we can freely speculate. In my opinion, it is going to be Kyurem, Meloetta and the Kami Trio. Seeing the latter makes it so that the Masketeer Trio will probably not have a role -- and for no good reason should Keldeo be featured without its related Legendary Pokémon. What does that mean for Keldeo? If they want to distribute the hidden Legendaries in the correct order, then Keldeo will have to be distributed before the showing of the next movie. I wonder when this event will be available. Normally, it should be at about September -- a year has passed since Victini was distributed for the first time.

Will it be used as promotion for another game? Like the Wii RPG or the Ranger-esque spin-off I was asking for. It's possible that Keldeo will be revealed or teased in about September (when Super Pokémon Rumble coverage will have ended) -- or even August; nothing says they could have included a model for the Pokémon as promotion in Super Rumble. Best case scenario for me would be for Keldeo to be on a spin-off and the M15 to be themed around Wii RPG (entirely possible, if not surprising to not happen if the game eventually comes). Another scenario with the same featured Pokémon would have Keldeo featured in Wii RPG or a spin-off and M15 based on a potential "Grey". I hope not.
Well, they did appear in Yellow as well as twice in the TCG, one of which times was during FRLG. They are probably just grunts, just identifiable ones. It's not like this is anything too major; just a simple, fun thing. TCG doesn't add to the story, but the more expanded world. There are cards of characters, like one picturing Brock along with Blaine, or others with characters like Rowan's assistant. Leaders' Pokémon artwork has also been showcased, as well as items and locations.

The sets are based on parts of each game, featuring specific Legendary Pokémon, organization themes and such. So, while the references are small and minor, you can't deny that they are fun appearances of several elements of the universe. At least that's the way I see it.

As for the Rocket Admin from the card, I guess thay she, as well as other members of TR just didn't happen to appear on Red's quest. Probably a, speculatively, villain that came against Leaf at some point? Or someone that Blue got through without caring too much? Or heck, just an admin of Rocket we don't know about. They surely had more than two during the Giovanni era.
I agree that Mew was probably traumatised after what happened, but I'm sure that it found a resolution eventually. It is called the phantom Pokémon for no unjustifiable reason. Sightings of it are seen throughout the world, and I bet that it chooses to appear before kind hearted trainers every now and then. A Pokémon no one has seen and knows about fits the description of later Legendary Pokémon. Mew's naughtyness and resourcefulness are ironic to it.

My guess is that the Faraway Island is where it origins from. Its powers can have it easily go from there to other places whenever it feels like.
Also, we've probably discussed that before, but I'm surprised that you see the TCG as a different continuity. I'd go as far as saying that it is the most undeniable source after the main series, topping even the GS creations.

It is designed so that it follows the games and occasionally add material (mostly minor). That argument stands even more since it also follows anime material (movie sets and such), on the way that it doesn't stand as a separate continuity, but as an addition to existing ones.

The normal expansions are obviously designed after the games, with no apparent contradictions that I remember. I especially like sets such as EX Team Rocket, which establish things (namely Jessie and James), or Gym Leader based sets, which have additional material like their Pokémon pictured and in some cases revealed.

Sugimori is not the only Game Freak artist to work on the TCG. The anime artwork are obviously anime-directed, but the TCG ones (except for those in special anime and spinoff sets) are always carefully based upon the main series.
I don't think Mew resides anywhere. It seems to me like a Pokémon that likes to travel and explore the world. :p
