A Close Encounter With Color

Chapter 1

Everyone starts a journey someday. Sometimes it's with Pokémon, sometimes it's a journey to find yourself... and sometimes it's something you'd never expect. Much to my good (or bad) luck, I had the latter of the group.

Everyone in this town is boring and annoying. Mostly annoying. They don't take me seriously, either. It must be because I haven't left on a Pokémon journey. And I honestly don't care. Well, that's a lie. I do care. If I were to be a huge world leader someday, I'd probably have them all be jesters so they'd see how it feels to be ridiculed. They'd see who is “immature”.

My parents tell me I have a temper. and that I act “too big for my britches”. I have no idea what that means, nor do I care. The biggest disappointment, though, that they've had the misfortune of reminding me of... is that I was uninterested in being a Pokémon Trainer. It didn't seem satisfying to me. I wanted to do something different, something I would gain real value from. Something I could be proud of. Earning badges through fighting in the league didn't appeal to me. All it did was prove I was better than some people who didn't matter. I didn't care about bragging rights with all those badges. What real power would I gain in the end?

But I decided to take my parents' advice (for once) one day. They told me to take the Nugget Bridge challenge and battle the kids stationed there. They were probably hoping it'd make me want to be a Trainer. I honestly don't understand why they wanted me to be a Trainer. They probably wanted the bragging rights if I became Champion. But now, I don't even care why.

“Firenze, you're going to actually try?” The kid laughed at me, leaning back on the bridge's railing. I truly hated Cale. He was just a bug Pokémon trainer... yet I only had a simple Chansey. It wasn't even mine. It was my mom's. And before you ask; my mom is not Nurse Joy. In fact, they have nothing in common.

“I'm going to win...” I growled at him. Being nineteen years old and possibly being beaten by a ten year old brat... well, lets just say it sucks.

“You'll never beat us here on Nugget Bridge!” Cale shouted, crossing his arms with a smirk. He was SO full of himself. And I hated every second of it.

The battle started. He threw out his first Poké Ball, a Caterpie emerging from it in a flash of red light. And I threw my own... my mother's Chansey emerging. The Caterpie shot strings of a floss-like substance out towards my Chansey, who blocked it without a trace of effort. Cale shouted commands to his Pokémon, but I didn't know what to do... I was terrible at battling.

But somehow... the battle turned in my favor. I remembered a few Pokémon moves... and before I knew it, I had won.

“...WHAT?” Cale grabbed his hair, angry with his defeat. “No way!”

I smiled. Somehow, in my first Pokémon battle ever... I had won.

And within a few minutes, I had actually beaten the fifth child on the bridge.

Who knew? Well... I WAS 9 years older than all of them. Yet I still hadn't started my Pokémon journey.

Then this event would turn into a moment I'd never forget.

“Seems like you're pretty good at battling.” The voice was quiet, but it seemed... out of place. Like it wasn't meant to be here.

I turned around. There was a man standing there. He didn't give me his name. He wore a black turtle-neck shirt with a huge red R on it.

“Would you believe me if I told you it was my first battle?” I smirked at him, crossing my arms.

“Yes, actually.” He smirked right back... and my own smug look turned into a frown.

“Anyways, what do you want?” I rolled my eyes, not wanting to stand there with that oddly dressed man any longer.

“First of all, congratulations on beating the Nugget
Bridge Challenge. Here is your prize.” He dropped a nugget in my hand.

“Thanks.” I turned to walk away, tired of this guy.

“You may suck at battling... but you do have talent.” The man walked up close to me, blocking my path... too close, if you want my opinion. I was about to smack him across the face for getting in mine... but then he continued. “I'm recruiting people with talent.”

“For what?” I raised an eyebrow, intrigued now. What could he possibly be interested in me for?

“Team Rocket.” He smirked once more. I began to hate that smirk.

“And what in the world is that?” I leaned back against the railing, remembering his proximity to my face.

“We are a gang dedicated to stealing Pokémon for profit.” He smiled at me, this time a tad more sincere. Just a little bit.

“That's pretty blunt for a guy I can call the cops on.” I smiled back, grabbing my cell phone from my bag. I didn't plan on actually calling the police. As much as I hated this guy, he interested me a little. I'd talk first, then call the police.

buahahahaha.png

“I say it because I know you have talent.” He leaned back towards me. “You have talent that most kids your age don't have. You have the potential to be a top admin in the business... hell, you might even work alongside the boss someday.”

I raised an eyebrow. His flattery was intriguing, but it was just flattery. Nothing more. “Sorry, but I'm not biting.” Even though these were the words I said, it was not the truth. If I joined these people... not only would my parents get off my back about being a Trainer, but I might gain some actual power.

“I can see it. You want to join.” The man stopped leaning towards me and he stood back. “Do what you want. The truck to the headquarters leaves tomorrow morning at 8am from in front of the Bike Store. If you want to join us, be there.” He turned and began to walk away, leaving me in my own thoughts. I stared down at my cell phone and dropped it back in my bag.

I lay in bed that night and made my decision.

---

The ride to Celedon City was a bumpy ride. This could be due to the fact we were in a truck as large as a school bus... I doubted it had good traction. As I got into the vehicle, I noticed I was stuck next to some other recruits he had gotten, all people I had never seen before. They were around my own age, and it bugged me. There was a good probability this was really a Slave Trade organization, and I made a huge mistake. But even if it was... I did have my parents off my back. Every cloud has a silver lining.

“Hey.” A girl said from behind me as I dropped my backpack in my lap. I turned to look at her. She had the brightest blue hair I have ever seen. Not that my own white hair was much different, but it was still alarming to see this early in the morning.

hiya.png

“Umm... hi.” I reminded myself to be friendly. To get a higher position in a job, being an asshole is not the way to go.

“I'm Daniella.” She smiled at me, the biggest smile I have ever seen. She didn't seem like the kind to join a criminal organization. She must have her reasons, and I'm not one to pry.

“I'm Firenze.” I responded to her question a little rudely (and bluntly), but it didn't bug me. It probably should have, so I added, “I haven't seen you before.”

“I'm from Veridian City. I've been traveling with these people for awhile now. They keep stopping to pick people up. You're the first girl.” Her grin grew larger. She was probably glad to be around someone with the same gender as her. Must have been damn creepy to be in a car for a few days with a bunch of guys.

“Oh. Well, glad to be a girl then.” I managed a friendly smile. Then the car started. I doubt we could have continued talking. This beat-up car sure was loud.

I stared out the window, the car driving out of town and into the valley. We passed by a small house with a large, fenced off backyard. I could see Pokémon running playfully there. Must be nice being a Pokémon, minus the close encounters with death during battles. We drove through this valley for hours.

The car reached Saffron City by nightfall. I had never been outside of Cerulean City, except the few vacations we took there. The lights were so bright... I felt like I was in a dream. I could have been, but some part of me thinks otherwise. Daniella and I looked over at each other, and it felt like we shared some sort of moment together. We were both girls in a strange place, surrounded by unfamiliar things... yet having someone in the same situation seemed to make everything better. I was half asleep as the car pulled to a stop, letting one more recruit in. And, much to my surprise (Get it? Sarcasm?), it was a boy. The car had a good ten kids in it by now. I watched the car pull away and I drifted to sleep.

---

I decided I hate cars. They wake you up in the most unpleasant ways.

A huge bump threw me out of my seat and onto that small space in between the seat I sat on and the seat in front of me. Thankfully, the car stopped after said bump and I had a chance to untangle myself from this predicament.

“Everyone, welcome to Celedon City. My name is Domino” A voice boomed over the speakers of the bus. I looked up. It was a girl this time, with blond hair curled next to her head. Her outfit was layered with pink instead of red, and she didn't seem to have a belt of Poké Balls like the other grunts. She must have been higher in status, too, seeing how the other Grunts looked at her.

Or she was just hot. I'm not too sure.

“Good work on deciding to join us! This is our base, in the Celedon City Casino!” She giggled a little bit, probably thinking of some inside joke. “Anyways, we'll show you through!”

Everyone began getting up and leaving the van, so I quickly hoisted my backpack over my shoulders and did the same. Daniella jumped up behind me, hugging me a little. “Isn't this exciting?”

I looked over at her with a scowl. “If you like being woken up from a speed bump, then yes. It is.”

“Oh you!” She squeezed me more. I growled a little. This girl was obviously trying too hard to make friends. As much as it bugged me... it did make me a little bit happier.

This girl took us in through a back door and down a long hallway. Everyone yawned a little as they walked. I felt glad I only had to stay in the car for a day. “Here's your room.” She pointed into a room that reminded me of the sleeping quarters in a ship. There were bunk beds lining the walls, just barely enough for them all. “You can sleep here unless you get your own home here in Celedon. Think of this as free boarding.” She giggled again, probably saying this to a million grunts before.

A man raised his hand. “Where are the other members?”

Domino smiled over at him. “They're all stationed elsewhere now. You're our group for Celedon now, so do a good job.” Her expression turned serious. “I'm going to go now. Your group leader will direct you now.” She then turned and walked out. Seemed the whole nice thing was an act.

This time, a man walked up. He wore a deep purple suit, and his belt had more than six Poké Balls on it. This group DOES work dirty. “I'll be your leader until one of you proves worthy.” He crossed his arms. “Follow me.”

He turned and walked out of the room, and we all began to follow. He went two doors down in the hallway and opened a closet. “Here are uniforms. After debriefing, come back here and get one for yourself. Now follow me.” He closed the door abruptly in our faces and walked down to the end of the hallway to a large set of double doors. He opened them up and walked into the pitch-black area, slamming the doors behind him.

The rest of us were reluctant to enter after him. I groaned, grabbing Daniella's hand and pulling her behind me. We moved past everyone, Daniella following me with a skip, almost falling over as we went. I then pushed the large doors open with my free hand, dragging Daniella with me into the darkness.

Light began to blare in the room, focusing on a raised stage. We all stood about fifteen feet below this stage, currently empty and the man from before being nowhere to be found. The only lights in the room were on the middle of the stage, directed at nothing yet. Then the man who brought us to this room stepped out onto the stage, the lights reflecting off of the R on his coat, giving us a sense that we were below him... both literally and figuratively.

“Welcome, trainees.” His voice boomed over the room, echoing in the silence. “Your goal here for now is to serve our Boss. Upon his request, he can promote you to either an Executive like me, or into a Field Agent where you can actually leave this building.” He chuckled to himself. “Until then, do your best to work hard for our Team. Now I am proud to present our Boss.” He stepped backwards and disappeared into the darkness.

Another man stepped forward, his arms behind his back. His entire persona was dark, even though he was standing in the only light. His suit was an ash gray, as well as his hair. His skin was an almost gray shade of white, and his eyes had a look about them that showed more power than we could ever comprehend. And the air about him made us feel smaller than the dust in the room.

“Welcome.” His voice was deep, echoing throughout the room even more powerful than the man before him. “I am Giovanni. I am the leader of Team Rocket. You are all lucky to meet me. I was stopping by here for a month or two before moving out to a job in Saffron City. Be good and you can go with us.”

He began to tell us all about Team Rocket. He talked about it with such vigor, yet something seemed off. I listened to him, entranced by how he spoke, only half paying attention to what he was really saying. His figure stood there with such power and might... I was completely awestruck. I had no idea why. Some part of me just knew I was meant to see him and find out what this Team Rocket was all about.

And before I knew it, he was done speaking and began to walk off. Part of me wanted to follow him, but I didn't move. Mostly because of the fifteen feet I'd have to climb, but also because I knew what I had to do. Before I could meet this man face to face, I'd have to make myself stand out. I'd have to be better than these others.

...what was I thinking? I don't know this guy. Why should I try and look up to him? I groaned to myself, crossing my arms. This was probably some sort of Jedi Mind Trick they were playing on me. And I wouldn't listen.

Yet... a part of me did. And I'm still not sure why.

Thats it for chapter 1! It'll get really good next chapter! Hope you're waiting! :) As for reviews... don't bash her character please. x3 Theres a method to her immatureness.

*speechless* Are you sure this is your first fanfiction?

Re: A Close Encounter With Color [PG-13]

Well, that's interesting... we rarely see any decent stories about TR lately...and through the eyes of a new recruit. This ought to be interesting. I'm looking forward how all this will play out. Me- hooked. :)

mm...I love it. Haven't seen anything good involving Team Rocket in a while. Btw, just a quick question, does Firenze still have that Chansey?

Nope! Its her mom's, so she gave it back. That comes up next chapter. :p Currently, just about everyone in the new recruits in pokemon-less.

Chapter 2

We had been taught the ins and outs of working here. I was a little frustrated over the fact we were paid on commission, but then it was only fair. We had to work to keep our place.

A day after this all, a new batch of grunts were introduced. They were from all over the place, like us. We had proceeded to distance ourselves from the others. My batch of Grunts were under a different command, and therefore were separate.

A certain group of four boys were extremely annoying. They kept announcing themselves as the Rocket Brothers and shouting how they'd be together through thick and thin, and no one could ever defeat them all. I rolled my eyes.

Daniella was the only one I could put up with. She had gotten the hint to be a little less hyper around me, and actually asked about my personal life. I didn't have much to talk about. But she seemed to.

Daniella was from Veridian City. She had known about Team Rocket for awhile, due to the Boss being the gym leader in that city. Undercover agents were everywhere. Daniella lived in the slums of that city, her mother working as a waitress in a small cafe, despite being past age of retirement. Her father had to work as a plumber. Daniella kept taking odd jobs to help support her family, but nothing seemed to work out. Then a Rocket Agent came to her, telling her of the riches she could make in Team Rocket.

I guess we both hoped that wasn't a lie.

--

We had been given the choice of a few different Pokémon to keep, due to most of us not owning any other Pokémon. A few people had brought Rattatas from home, but I didn't take my mother's Chansey. I had a few Poké Balls my mother had given me, but that was it.

Our choices were based on what Pokémon the last batch of grunts had caught too many of. Sadly, that was mostly Grimer and Zubats. A few Cubone, Koffing, Machop, and Drowzee were there. But those were taken first. I was in the back of the line.

Daniella was one of the lucky ones who got a Cubone. I just grabbed the first ball in front of me, a Zubat. I didn't care which one I got. I wasn't going to keep it.

Back in our rooms, after the other Grunts were talking, I handed the ball to Daniella.

“Huh?” Her eyes met mine, confused.

“I don't want it.” I shrugged my shoulders.

“But... it's your only Pokémon.” She tried to hand it back to me, worried.

“No, i'll get one tonight.” I tried to smile to reassure her. I didn't like these generic Pokémon. I wanted something unique. I wanted to stand out in front of the Boss... but I didn't want to admit to myself that was the reason why.

Daniella smiled half-heartedly. “Thanks, then.” She then looked over at the other members, whose conversation had gone from civil to a shout war.

“You guys have no idea what I can do!” one guy shouted. “I've already got 4 Pokémon, plus the zubat I just got. I'm well on my way to becoming the favorite.”

“Shut up, quantity isn't what matters!” Another man yelled at him, getting in his face. “My sandshrew are really powerful. I'm sure the Boss cares more about power!”

I let out a sigh. Day 1 and people were already fighting. “Hey, save it for a Pokémon battle.” I stood up and walked inbetween them.

“What did you say, girl?” The second man stood up in my face, and I glared right back.

“Save it. We're supposed to work together.” I turned around to face the other guy. “So I suggest the two of you stop fighting and concentrate on practicing what you preach.”

I then turned around, walking back to my bed. In the corner of my eye, I saw a small figure watching through the door. By the time I turned my head to see what it was, I only caught a glimpse of red hair, and it was gone.

The two guys stopped fighting, turning to their own groups of friends to talk. Daniella smiled at me. “That was cool of you to break up a fight.”

“I didn't want to deal with hearing them all night.” I scratched my head. “After all, fighting like that is pointless.” I glanced back at the doorway, wondering who that person was.

---

I crawled through the grass military-style. I wanted that Pokémon.

I had left in the middle of the night while everyone was deep in sleep. I made sure not to wake Daniella: she was on the bunk above me. I went just to the outskirts of Celedon into a small grassland, knowing I could find something a million times better than what everyone else had. After all, something unique had to be here.

Then I saw a flash of red. For a moment, I thought I had seen that person from the doorway. But no, it was a Pokémon. It was a vulpix.

I crawled in the grass, a Poké Ball in my hand. I probably shouldn't have given Daniella the zubat yet... I could have used it to weaken this prize. But it was too late for that. I wanted this Pokémon.

I stood in the grass, startling the vulpix. It turned as if to run, but then stopped. It looked up at me, my arm raised with the Poké Ball. It's eyes glittered as I tossed it.

The ball didn't even shake. I had caught it on my first try.

---

It wasn't for another week that I would be able to use it.

---

I decided I hated the Game Corner.

It was large... too large. It was a Casino with way too many people. And it didn't help that I wasn't allowed inside the main building past the stairs. Daniella and I were security.

And we weren't the fun kind of security. No, that was for the buff guys. Daniella and I just had to stick around the stairs and make sure no one was snooping about. We had a poster in the back of the room that would open the doors to our hideout. Daniella had to hang out on the other side of that door. I hung out a few feet away, by the stairs.

And days would pass, and nothing would happen. This was all just training. We had to do this until a new batch of grunts came in. After that, we could go on missions. Everyone was talking about which group would be chosen to go on the next raid. All I heard from the rumors was something about a Poké Ball that would never fail. I wondered if I had it by accident.

The days passed me by, and I grew used to sitting on the top of the stairs and petting my Vulpix. I named her Gem, even though the others had told me not to become too attached to my Pokémon. You tend to give them to the Boss unless you're an executive. I didn't care. She was mine for now.

It was a week after I caught her that things changed.

I was sitting on top of the stairs, just absentmindedly watching Daniella play with her Cubone and Zubat. She danced around with them, happy with the world. And then I saw a figure pass her by.

“Daniella!” I got up, grabbing Gem into my arms.

“Hm?” She twirled around, smiling.

“Someone's back there.” I pointed behind her to the hallway I had seen. “Aren't we the only ones on patrol here?”

Daniella cocked her head and turned around. And a figure turned the corner to stand before us.

It was a mere child. He must not have been older than ten or eleven. He was wearing street clothes, a backpack hanging over one arm. His brown hair poked out from beneath a red and white hat. He bounced a Poké Ball in one hand.

“Hey, kid, you're not supposed to be here.” I stepped forward in front of Daniella.

“........” The kid didn't reply, he just scanned me with his eyes. I glared at him, crossing my arms.

“Scram. Or I'll make you.”

He then pressed the button on his Poké Ball, a Pikachu coming out.

Daniella pushed in front of me. “Cubone! Go!”

Her Cubone ran in front, and the fight began.

“Daniella! I can handle this!” I said, grabbing her by the shoulder.

“My Cubone has an advantage. Trust me.” She looked at me, and for the first time she had a serious look on her face. I felt taken aback and I stepped away, putting my Vulpix onto the ground to watch.

The Pikachu and Cubone were engrossed in a fight. The boy only shouted out move names to the Pokémon, his voice very quiet as he did so. Daniella shouted all sorts of commands.

I was surprised when she had lost the fight.

Her Cubone fell, and she ran up and took it in her arms. “Cubone!” She hugged it, looking up at the kid. She then transferred her glance to me. “I'll go call back up.” She ran off to the stairs.

I looked over at this kid. He smirked at me, proud of his easy victory. I was about to command my Vulpix into fight when I heard sirens blare over the loud speakers. I turned around, covering my ears. I closed my eyes a moment, and when I opened them the kid was gone.

“No!” I shouted, and I ran down the hall. I caught sight of him running to the service elevator. The door closed in my face.

Someone must have held it up. The elevator would not come back for me. I heard shouting from up the shaft. I banged on the door. I needed to help. I knew I could. It was taking too long. I ran for the stairs, rushing up them to the floor our Boss's office was on.

And then I stood in front of a sight I'd never forget.

The boy was standing in the middle of the office. Two fellow Grunts were watching, obviously defeated in a quick fight. The Boss stood in front of the boy, a seemingly blank look on his face, yet a small amount of sweat was visible. A Kangaskhan was passed out on the floor, a triumphant Ivysaur in front of it. I stopped in the entrance to the room.

“What...?” The Boss gritted his teeth, his fist clenching. “This can't be...” He looked over at me, and a few other grunts who had gathered behind me. “Get him!”

The other grunts paused. They were scared. They were honestly scared of this child.

“Idiots!” I pointed forward. “Gem, get him!”

Gem jumped up from behind me, a powerful flamethrower going from her mouth. It burned the Ivysaur before it had a chance to react.

The boy flinched, and he ran forward. He called back the Ivysaur into its Poké Ball, then calling out his Pikachu once more. It was then I realized that was all he had left.

Gem and Pikachu stared each other down for a brief moment. “Gem, flamethrower!” Gem powered up again, shooting flames in all directions. The Boss took a step back, hitting the button for the alarm again. He didn't know this kid and taken out all of his security. I didn't know until later.

The Pikachu seemed to be far too powerful for Gem. But she couldn't give up. Never. She shot flame after flame.

Then I caught something in my eye again. Another flash of red. And this time, it wasn't a flame. I turned to look, watching a child a little younger than the one I was battle run out of the room.

A sharp cry from Gem knocked me back into reality.

The Pikachu had used a powerful electric attack on Gem, paralyzing her. “Gem! Quickly! Will-O-Wisp!” It followed my command, the Pikachu crouching down in pain. The boy took a step back.

“......” He called back his Pikachu, and he proceeded to run out of the room. Had I won?

“Gem! Stop him!”

Gem proceeded to run after him, as I did too. Gem shot out a Will-O-Wisp to slow him, but he turned a corner before it could hit.

“Let him go.” The Boss said, sitting back down in his chair.

I turned around, Gem stopping in her place. The other Grunts who had been chasing him stopped too.

“It'll serve us no purpose to stop him now.” The Boss crossed his arms. “I think you there have given him enough fear of us to not interfere again.”

Pride had filled my chest at being singled out by the Boss. But bragging would have to come later. “Are you sure, Boss? I think we should get rid of him now...” I said, stepping towards him slightly.

“You're probably right, but it won't do us any good to waste our efforts.” The Boss waved his hand. “Now all of you, leave.”

---

I had been promoted. It was only that I was in charge of the other Grunts, but it was enough to make everyone jealous. I was swollen with pride. After all, the Boss had seen me battle and win. I was a step ahead of everyone.

But that shouldn't matter. What was wrong with me? It must have been those Jedi mind tricks again.

Daniella seemed happiest about my promotion.

“Oh my god! This is awesome!” She jumped on me, hugging me tightly.

“Yeah, I guess.” I shrugged.

“No, really! This is so cool!” She smiled and let go of me. “Hey, if you get promoted again, you'll get your own room and everything!” She stared off in the distance. I got the strange feeling she was imagining it.

“If that happens, you can have my room.” I shrugged again. She seemed like the type who'd like their own room, especially with how loud she was...

“No, it's okay!” She clasped her hands together. “Now you just need to impress him again, and you'll be flying in the big bucks...”

It surprised me to realize I hadn't even cared about the money these past few days. I was getting minimum wage until we went on field missions... and I hadn't even noticed. “Right...”

It was then in the corner of my eye, I saw the red hair again.

---

So this was kinda rushed. :/ Sorry it's not as good of quality as the last chapter. I'm sick and tired and just wanted to finish getting my thoughts down. :p

Next chapter might not be for awhile, because i plan to make it more well written than this one. And Chapter 3 will have a huge splurge of plot. :p I've got it aaaaaaaaaaall planned out :D

Re: A Close Encounter With Color [PG-13] [9/20: Chapter 2 is up!]

It was shorter but it was good... you showed how an "ordinary" kid just barges in and annihilates (kay nearly annihilates) TR while you're on the other side of the barrier... you're just cannon fodder for him...

And the Vulpix is a good choice in my opinion... it's neither an overrated Pokemon nor something weak...

I do wonder who the guy/gal with the red hair is, though...

Nice one, especially with the choice of a Vulpix. Is there a specific kind of Pokemon she'll go for; or will she go for a balanced team of Pokemon? It'll be very interesting to see the next update :)

I know, while writing i'm begining to hate Red... XD

And the next chapter will be done hopefully pretty soon, and the next chapter reveals who this child is! :D

Chapter 3

Its times like these it feels like you've been lied to.

People tell you your entire life that you can do anything. If you set your mind to it, you can do it for sure. All your dreams will come true.

It sucks because as the days go on, I find this closer and closer to being a lie.

---

Because of my recent promotion, I gained an even more boring job to handle. I got to boss around the grunts, walk in the actual casino, and hang out in the employee coffee room. Well, I have to admit the first one is a little bit fun... and the last one isn't my job, but I end up doing that the majority of the time. My job will really pick up if a problem arises (like if that kid comes back) or if we go on a Field Mission... which had been confirmed to be in four days. The Boss decided to let both groups go on it, due to the bickering that was nonstop about who would be chosen (and he and I must both agree it's annoying...).

So I spent my days walking around the casino, smiling at guests. I was still in my typical grunt uniform, the only new addition being red gloves and boots to show I was a little bit of a higher level. Too bad I wasn't cool enough to wear whatever I wanted as long as it had an R on it. I still had to be seen as below the Executives.

I began to wander around the casino lobby, not really going anywhere. My eyes scanned the walls mindlessly, memorizing the doors and where they went. There were friendly signs on everything, and no one could get lost in here unless they really tried. Or took a wrong door. But you'd have to be blind and blond to do that.

I turned a corner into a new area I decided to explore. I hadn't been around the entire casino yet, seeing as it was so large. I wondered why it was an all-ages casino, but then I guessed it was so Team Rocket could make more money. Fancy that.

As I walked down this new hallway, my eyes caught sight of an unmarked door. It looked as freshly painted as everything else, but there wasn't even an Employees Only sign on it. It was blank. Yet the door was cracked open, and I could vaguely see into it. My curiosity got the better of me, so I walked up and pushed open the door.

Inside, I saw something very unexpected.

It was a small room, bookshelves lining the outer walls. In the middle of it, there were two tables, each set with eight chairs. There were boxes laying about, some opened and some whose contents were hidden. It was very dusty inside the room, and dimly lit by a single window at the top. There was a piano in the back corner, covered by a sheet and caked in dust. And in the middle of the room, almost perfect in the setting, was a small red-headed boy reading a book.

As soon as I stepped into the room, he bolted up and out of his chair, slamming his book, and stared at me. He had shoulder length red hair, and a dark reddish brown eyes. I gathered he was about seven or eight years old, possibly a little older by the way he looked. He looked more mature than kids his age should be.

It was then I realized he was the child I had seen the past weeks, peeking in the doorways, or walking around the corner... he had to be someone in Team Rocket. Or a child of a member, perhaps.

“Hey.” I smiled at him to be friendly, walking a few steps towards him.

His eyes never left my face, though his expression was unreadable. That was somehow familiar, but I couldn't put my hand on it.

“What are you doing here?” The kid snapped at me, scooting himself closer to the book as if protecting it.

“I was wandering around and decided to take a look. Is this room yours?” I didn't want to intrude if it were his room... but it would be odd to have a personal room in the middle of a casino like this where anyone could come in.

“Its anyone's.” His eyes scanned me a moment, decided I wasn't a threat, and then he sat back down in his chair.

It was peculiar to see such a child in this room, all alone. I wondered briefly where his family might be, but I decided not to say anything on it. All the seats beside his own were covered in a thin layer of dust. No one must have been here in a long time.

I decided to sit across from him at the table. “I see...” I leaned my head on my hands, closing my eyes. It had been a long day, and I was a little tired. Even if I didn't get anything accomplished today, it seemed to drag on for hours...

“Why are you still here?” The kid asked, looking up at me with a frown. He crossed his arms, closing the book.

My eyes scanned the book. It was about battling. Okay, a kid wanting to battle. I get that. “I have nothing better to do.”

“You're weird.” He stated flatly, getting up to put the book away.

“So whats your name, kid?” I didn't know why I was so interested in this child. There was just something about him that I liked. It might have been the look in his eyes... so familiar, yet I just couldn't place it.

“Kamon.” He said, putting the book on the shelf.

“Well, I'm Firenze.” I stood up, following him to the shelf.

He looked up at me, and I noticed how much taller I was than him. I was probably over twice his age... yet this kid seemed about as mature as I was.

“So you like battles?” I said, pointing to the book he was putting away. “You old enough to be a trainer yet?”

“I can't.”

I frowned. Now this was something I hadn't heard. While I had been neglecting being a trainer... this kid couldn't be one? “Why not?”

“Dad won't let me have any Pokemon.” He leaned against the bookshelf, his eyes scanning me once more.

“Why not?” I asked again, feeling a little weird from his staring, but still curious nonetheless.

There was silence for a few moments.

“...your hat is plain.” He stared up at my hat a moment, then he walked out of the room.

I stared after him a few moments to wonder what he meant by that.

Daniella talked too much.

We were sitting in the lounge for lunch, and she talked on and on about her Cubone. I thought it was a little funny, as she was so obsessed with that thing. I nodded at the right times, said “yes” and “no” at the right times... I wasn't really paying attention to what she said. I was more of trying to place where I had seen that look on Kamon's face before. He was very familiar, but I couldn't trace it.

“So what did you do today?”

My mind snapped back into reality, noticing a question directed at me for once.

“Oh. I found a Study down on second floor... some kid was in there.” I shrugged, not really knowing how to talk about myself like she did.

“Oh really?” She leaned on her hands, intent.

“...yeah.” I guessed that meant she wanted to hear more. “He had red hair. He said his name was Kamon. He was really quiet... and he was sorta rude.” I leaned on one hand, playing with the straw in my espresso.

“Sounds like someone I know.” Daniella giggled at her own joke. I rolled my eyes.

“Except I'm about twice his age.” I snorted a little, sipping my espresso blankly.

“Well, it's cool you found a new friend!” Daniella clapped her hands together, smiling huge.

“He's not exactly my friend. He's just some kid I see around...” But that was the end of it. Daniella had gone off on a rant about friendship, sticking together, etc. I rolled my eyes once again. She was the closest thing I had to a friend, and that was far from one. Especially not that Kamon kid.

“So, I heard there's the Field Trip in four days!” Daniella squeaked.

“It's a Field MISSION, not a trip...” I corrected her.

“Oh, same thing!” She leaned forward in her chair. “I hear we're going to steal the plans for the Master Ball! It's a Poke Ball that will never fail while catching a Pokemon! If we had a bunch of those... we'd never have problems again!”

I blinked. She was really into this. “Yeah, I guess. But isn't the creator of this Silph Co? They're the biggest company in Kanto... they own all the Poke Marts...”

“So?!” Daniella squealed. I covered one ear to block out some of the pain of her high voice. “We're Team Rocket! We can do anything!” She jumped up in her chair, very excited.

I had the feeling she was trying too hard. As I looked up on her face, I saw something I hadn't seen before. She was actually forcing a smile.

---

That night, I sat awake in bed staring at the ceiling, my white nightgown's giant red R being the brightest thing in the room. I sighed, knowing I wasn't going to fall asleep for awhile. I'd probably fall asleep in five hours, then wake up late for breakfast... and that always sucks because the leftovers are never any good. Usually just fed to the company Snorlax. I sighed once more, then frowned at the bottom of the bunk above me. Daniella was fast asleep, not even noticing what frustration I felt. If she were awake, she'd notice. The only time her mouth shut was while she was asleep.

I heard a loud snore from above me.

Apparently not.

I groaned, covering my face in a pillow. The snoring continued. I wasn't tired at all, and this was not helping.

I decided to get up from my bed, running fingers through my hair as I trudged groggily out of the dorm room. Maybe I could tire myself out from walking, or at least get a glass of water. I groaned, grabbing my head as I realized how much of a headache I had. Must have been from all that dust in the Study...

I saw a figure in the corner of my eye scramble away. A flash of red.

I turned around quickly, just catching sight of that red hair again.

“Kamon?” I whispered, walking towards that hallway. A small head poked from around the corner.

“You.” He said, probably not remembering my name. It didn't matter much to me anyways.

“What are you doing here?” I whispered to him, my pace closing the distance between us to he was just a yard away. I noticed he was breathing heavily, clutching a red ribbon to his chest. “And why are you so out of breath?”

“I didn't think you were a ghost or anything...” he stuttered, then he stood up straight and crossed his arms.

I couldn't help but giggle at the sight. While earlier he had been so calm and mighty, now he was just a regular little kid. I bet I looked like a ghost. Not normal for someone to walk around this late in a white gown and have white hair...

“That's okay. But what are you doing walking around this late? Shouldn't you be in bed?”

“Dad lets me do what I want.” Kamon said, stiffening up a little more. “And I wanted to do something.”

“Like what?” I wondered briefly why I cared so much. It was probably because I was in a hurry to get tired, and boring conversations always seemed to do the trick. Or I could have genuinely been interested. I'm never quite sure.

“None of your business.” He took a step back. “Though... here.” He held out the red ribbon he was holding.

“Whats this?” I took it from his hand, looking at it curiously.

“Something that will make your hat match.” He huffed, as if it were obvious. “Anyways, I have things to do...” He turned and walked the other way.

“Get to bed.” I said back at him in a huff. He just continued walking, not acknowledging what I said.

---

I stared up in bed at the ribbon. Why had he given me this? I sat up, pulling my uniform out of the drawer and setting it on the bed beside me. I sat the ribbon on top of my hat, then it hit me.

My entire uniform was black, with hints of red. Yet my hat was pure black.

Well, the kid sure had an eye for color. Thats for sure. Maybe it bugged him that I didn't have an even distribution of color...

Either way, that was nice of him to give me the ribbon to fix it. Not that I should call it “nice”. He was rude the entire time, and quiet when he wasn't saying something rude. I chuckled. Seems like the kid and me did have something in common.

Whoo! Chapter 3 is done. Well, it'd been done for awhile, but i have a few more pages written up. I decided it was turning out too long for one chapter, so i'll upload that as Chapter 4 when i'm done. Hope you like it! :3

Loved this chapter but it really makes me wonder what's going to happen. I really want to know what this kid has to do with the story. Can't wait for chapter 4. :D
