Everyone starts a journey someday. Sometimes it's with Pokémon, sometimes it's a journey to find yourself... and sometimes it's something you'd never expect. Much to my good (or bad) luck, I had the latter of the group.
Everyone in this town is boring and annoying. Mostly annoying. They don't take me seriously, either. It must be because I haven't left on a Pokémon journey. And I honestly don't care. Well, that's a lie. I do care. If I were to be a huge world leader someday, I'd probably have them all be jesters so they'd see how it feels to be ridiculed. They'd see who is “immature”.
My parents tell me I have a temper. and that I act “too big for my britches”. I have no idea what that means, nor do I care. The biggest disappointment, though, that they've had the misfortune of reminding me of... is that I was uninterested in being a Pokémon Trainer. It didn't seem satisfying to me. I wanted to do something different, something I would gain real value from. Something I could be proud of. Earning badges through fighting in the league didn't appeal to me. All it did was prove I was better than some people who didn't matter. I didn't care about bragging rights with all those badges. What real power would I gain in the end?
But I decided to take my parents' advice (for once) one day. They told me to take the Nugget Bridge challenge and battle the kids stationed there. They were probably hoping it'd make me want to be a Trainer. I honestly don't understand why they wanted me to be a Trainer. They probably wanted the bragging rights if I became Champion. But now, I don't even care why.
“Firenze, you're going to actually try?” The kid laughed at me, leaning back on the bridge's railing. I truly hated Cale. He was just a bug Pokémon trainer... yet I only had a simple Chansey. It wasn't even mine. It was my mom's. And before you ask; my mom is not Nurse Joy. In fact, they have nothing in common.
“I'm going to win...” I growled at him. Being nineteen years old and possibly being beaten by a ten year old brat... well, lets just say it sucks.
“You'll never beat us here on Nugget Bridge!” Cale shouted, crossing his arms with a smirk. He was SO full of himself. And I hated every second of it.
The battle started. He threw out his first Poké Ball, a Caterpie emerging from it in a flash of red light. And I threw my own... my mother's Chansey emerging. The Caterpie shot strings of a floss-like substance out towards my Chansey, who blocked it without a trace of effort. Cale shouted commands to his Pokémon, but I didn't know what to do... I was terrible at battling.
But somehow... the battle turned in my favor. I remembered a few Pokémon moves... and before I knew it, I had won.
“...WHAT?” Cale grabbed his hair, angry with his defeat. “No way!”
I smiled. Somehow, in my first Pokémon battle ever... I had won.
And within a few minutes, I had actually beaten the fifth child on the bridge.
Who knew? Well... I WAS 9 years older than all of them. Yet I still hadn't started my Pokémon journey.
Then this event would turn into a moment I'd never forget.
“Seems like you're pretty good at battling.” The voice was quiet, but it seemed... out of place. Like it wasn't meant to be here.
I turned around. There was a man standing there. He didn't give me his name. He wore a black turtle-neck shirt with a huge red R on it.
“Would you believe me if I told you it was my first battle?” I smirked at him, crossing my arms.
“Yes, actually.” He smirked right back... and my own smug look turned into a frown.
“Anyways, what do you want?” I rolled my eyes, not wanting to stand there with that oddly dressed man any longer.
“First of all, congratulations on beating the Nugget
Bridge Challenge. Here is your prize.” He dropped a nugget in my hand.
“Thanks.” I turned to walk away, tired of this guy.
“You may suck at battling... but you do have talent.” The man walked up close to me, blocking my path... too close, if you want my opinion. I was about to smack him across the face for getting in mine... but then he continued. “I'm recruiting people with talent.”
“For what?” I raised an eyebrow, intrigued now. What could he possibly be interested in me for?
“Team Rocket.” He smirked once more. I began to hate that smirk.
“And what in the world is that?” I leaned back against the railing, remembering his proximity to my face.
“We are a gang dedicated to stealing Pokémon for profit.” He smiled at me, this time a tad more sincere. Just a little bit.
“That's pretty blunt for a guy I can call the cops on.” I smiled back, grabbing my cell phone from my bag. I didn't plan on actually calling the police. As much as I hated this guy, he interested me a little. I'd talk first, then call the police.
“I say it because I know you have talent.” He leaned back towards me. “You have talent that most kids your age don't have. You have the potential to be a top admin in the business... hell, you might even work alongside the boss someday.”
I raised an eyebrow. His flattery was intriguing, but it was just flattery. Nothing more. “Sorry, but I'm not biting.” Even though these were the words I said, it was not the truth. If I joined these people... not only would my parents get off my back about being a Trainer, but I might gain some actual power.
“I can see it. You want to join.” The man stopped leaning towards me and he stood back. “Do what you want. The truck to the headquarters leaves tomorrow morning at 8am from in front of the Bike Store. If you want to join us, be there.” He turned and began to walk away, leaving me in my own thoughts. I stared down at my cell phone and dropped it back in my bag.
I lay in bed that night and made my decision.
The ride to Celedon City was a bumpy ride. This could be due to the fact we were in a truck as large as a school bus... I doubted it had good traction. As I got into the vehicle, I noticed I was stuck next to some other recruits he had gotten, all people I had never seen before. They were around my own age, and it bugged me. There was a good probability this was really a Slave Trade organization, and I made a huge mistake. But even if it was... I did have my parents off my back. Every cloud has a silver lining.
“Hey.” A girl said from behind me as I dropped my backpack in my lap. I turned to look at her. She had the brightest blue hair I have ever seen. Not that my own white hair was much different, but it was still alarming to see this early in the morning.
“Umm... hi.” I reminded myself to be friendly. To get a higher position in a job, being an asshole is not the way to go.
“I'm Daniella.” She smiled at me, the biggest smile I have ever seen. She didn't seem like the kind to join a criminal organization. She must have her reasons, and I'm not one to pry.
“I'm Firenze.” I responded to her question a little rudely (and bluntly), but it didn't bug me. It probably should have, so I added, “I haven't seen you before.”
“I'm from Veridian City. I've been traveling with these people for awhile now. They keep stopping to pick people up. You're the first girl.” Her grin grew larger. She was probably glad to be around someone with the same gender as her. Must have been damn creepy to be in a car for a few days with a bunch of guys.
“Oh. Well, glad to be a girl then.” I managed a friendly smile. Then the car started. I doubt we could have continued talking. This beat-up car sure was loud.
I stared out the window, the car driving out of town and into the valley. We passed by a small house with a large, fenced off backyard. I could see Pokémon running playfully there. Must be nice being a Pokémon, minus the close encounters with death during battles. We drove through this valley for hours.
The car reached Saffron City by nightfall. I had never been outside of Cerulean City, except the few vacations we took there. The lights were so bright... I felt like I was in a dream. I could have been, but some part of me thinks otherwise. Daniella and I looked over at each other, and it felt like we shared some sort of moment together. We were both girls in a strange place, surrounded by unfamiliar things... yet having someone in the same situation seemed to make everything better. I was half asleep as the car pulled to a stop, letting one more recruit in. And, much to my surprise (Get it? Sarcasm?), it was a boy. The car had a good ten kids in it by now. I watched the car pull away and I drifted to sleep.
I decided I hate cars. They wake you up in the most unpleasant ways.
A huge bump threw me out of my seat and onto that small space in between the seat I sat on and the seat in front of me. Thankfully, the car stopped after said bump and I had a chance to untangle myself from this predicament.
“Everyone, welcome to Celedon City. My name is Domino” A voice boomed over the speakers of the bus. I looked up. It was a girl this time, with blond hair curled next to her head. Her outfit was layered with pink instead of red, and she didn't seem to have a belt of Poké Balls like the other grunts. She must have been higher in status, too, seeing how the other Grunts looked at her.
Or she was just hot. I'm not too sure.
“Good work on deciding to join us! This is our base, in the Celedon City Casino!” She giggled a little bit, probably thinking of some inside joke. “Anyways, we'll show you through!”
Everyone began getting up and leaving the van, so I quickly hoisted my backpack over my shoulders and did the same. Daniella jumped up behind me, hugging me a little. “Isn't this exciting?”
I looked over at her with a scowl. “If you like being woken up from a speed bump, then yes. It is.”
“Oh you!” She squeezed me more. I growled a little. This girl was obviously trying too hard to make friends. As much as it bugged me... it did make me a little bit happier.
This girl took us in through a back door and down a long hallway. Everyone yawned a little as they walked. I felt glad I only had to stay in the car for a day. “Here's your room.” She pointed into a room that reminded me of the sleeping quarters in a ship. There were bunk beds lining the walls, just barely enough for them all. “You can sleep here unless you get your own home here in Celedon. Think of this as free boarding.” She giggled again, probably saying this to a million grunts before.
A man raised his hand. “Where are the other members?”
Domino smiled over at him. “They're all stationed elsewhere now. You're our group for Celedon now, so do a good job.” Her expression turned serious. “I'm going to go now. Your group leader will direct you now.” She then turned and walked out. Seemed the whole nice thing was an act.
This time, a man walked up. He wore a deep purple suit, and his belt had more than six Poké Balls on it. This group DOES work dirty. “I'll be your leader until one of you proves worthy.” He crossed his arms. “Follow me.”
He turned and walked out of the room, and we all began to follow. He went two doors down in the hallway and opened a closet. “Here are uniforms. After debriefing, come back here and get one for yourself. Now follow me.” He closed the door abruptly in our faces and walked down to the end of the hallway to a large set of double doors. He opened them up and walked into the pitch-black area, slamming the doors behind him.
The rest of us were reluctant to enter after him. I groaned, grabbing Daniella's hand and pulling her behind me. We moved past everyone, Daniella following me with a skip, almost falling over as we went. I then pushed the large doors open with my free hand, dragging Daniella with me into the darkness.
Light began to blare in the room, focusing on a raised stage. We all stood about fifteen feet below this stage, currently empty and the man from before being nowhere to be found. The only lights in the room were on the middle of the stage, directed at nothing yet. Then the man who brought us to this room stepped out onto the stage, the lights reflecting off of the R on his coat, giving us a sense that we were below him... both literally and figuratively.
“Welcome, trainees.” His voice boomed over the room, echoing in the silence. “Your goal here for now is to serve our Boss. Upon his request, he can promote you to either an Executive like me, or into a Field Agent where you can actually leave this building.” He chuckled to himself. “Until then, do your best to work hard for our Team. Now I am proud to present our Boss.” He stepped backwards and disappeared into the darkness.
Another man stepped forward, his arms behind his back. His entire persona was dark, even though he was standing in the only light. His suit was an ash gray, as well as his hair. His skin was an almost gray shade of white, and his eyes had a look about them that showed more power than we could ever comprehend. And the air about him made us feel smaller than the dust in the room.
“Welcome.” His voice was deep, echoing throughout the room even more powerful than the man before him. “I am Giovanni. I am the leader of Team Rocket. You are all lucky to meet me. I was stopping by here for a month or two before moving out to a job in Saffron City. Be good and you can go with us.”
He began to tell us all about Team Rocket. He talked about it with such vigor, yet something seemed off. I listened to him, entranced by how he spoke, only half paying attention to what he was really saying. His figure stood there with such power and might... I was completely awestruck. I had no idea why. Some part of me just knew I was meant to see him and find out what this Team Rocket was all about.
And before I knew it, he was done speaking and began to walk off. Part of me wanted to follow him, but I didn't move. Mostly because of the fifteen feet I'd have to climb, but also because I knew what I had to do. Before I could meet this man face to face, I'd have to make myself stand out. I'd have to be better than these others.
...what was I thinking? I don't know this guy. Why should I try and look up to him? I groaned to myself, crossing my arms. This was probably some sort of Jedi Mind Trick they were playing on me. And I wouldn't listen.
Yet... a part of me did. And I'm still not sure why.
Thats it for chapter 1! It'll get really good next chapter! Hope you're waiting! As for reviews... don't bash her character please. x3 Theres a method to her immatureness.
