It's official, Bob Barker is hanging up his microphone after 35 years as host on The Price is Right (50 years overall, since he hosted Truth or Consequences from 1956-1974). This deeply saddens me, since I've grown up on TPIR for all of my life, and Bob is my most favorite Game Show emcee of all time, due to his attitude and longevity. No one will ever replace him as host of TPIR, no matter what anyone says. All I can say is that he is indeed a living legend, and I'm glad that he's retiring while he's on top. My vivid memories of The Price is Right involved conversations between himself and the late Rod Roddy. I also remember purposely staying home from school in the mid-90's just to watch his show. Good Luck Bob, you've brightened many people's days for the past 35 years, and now it's time to cherish your golden years. Live them well.

Yeah, that definitely does suck. I honestly thought he'd host that show forever, and also that he was a robot.

He will be missed though. I guess even robots have to retire sooner or later. :(

Aww......

That's very sad indeed, TSS. :-(

And I too will miss Bob Barker being the host.

Of course, I haven't seen very many episodes of TPIR (due to me having perfect attendence through middle school and high school). But from the episodes I did have a chance to watch, I can say that I really enjoyed them. And Bob was definitely a great host.

I loved the message about "fixing" your pets that he always said at the end of every episode. I thought that was a very nice thing for him to do. ^_^

I used to watch the Price is Right a lot when I was younger, although I haven't seen it in a number of years. Sucks that he's leaving, but at least it's because he's retiring (certainly deserves a good retirement) instead of something worse. Wonder if Louie Anderson is going to be taking over.

NOOOOO!
Not Bob!?
BOB!
I used to watch The Price is Right a lot. It used to be my favorite game show.
I guess Bob's just tired of the whole thing.
Wonder if Louie Anderson is going to be taking over.
AUGH! NO! NO! NO! GTFO, Louie Anderson!

You got to be kidding. I watch TPIR at every opportunity (which is few and far between now). It's my favorite game show next to Jeopardy and part of it was Bob. This sucks but Bob would eventually have to leave.

Who's this Anderson person anyway?

Interesting fact about Bob Barker is that he's a big time animal lover. Has a charity dedicated to it I believe. It's one of the things I respect most about him.

He's so dedicated that... you know the reruns that are shown on GSN? He won't allow them to show any episodes which had furs as prizes from what I hear.

He will be missed by many.

I really loved this man, I grew up with him. My grandmother would let us watch
this while we ate lunch when I was a kid. Seriously, this man has made memories
through a good amount of generations. He was the best daytime TV personality
throughout this generation. It's a shame he has to leave off at this one, but I
understand why he would. He made it pretty far down the road and a proper
farewell salute shall be had.

Actually, GSN hasn't aired TPIR since 2000, due to a dispute from CBS. The clause stated that CBS would pay FrantleMedia less money if they allowed GSN to show TPIR. And yes, he has stated that he doesn't want the episodes with fur coats to be aired, which is basically all of the nighttime series, and the majority of episodes from 1972-1981.

With that being said, there's a pretty good chance that CBS will lift that clause and will allow GSN to show TPIR again next year perhaps.

Actually, I know why TPiR is not on GSN anymore. You see, when GSN began in 1994, they had already purchased the rights to the entire Mark Goodson library of shows minus three---"The Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour" due to a bizarre cross-ownership problem with Goodson's company and Orion Television (also, it is said Gene Rayburn demanded that it never see the light of day again) and the two shows still on the air in '94, Family Feud and TPiR. Because they were still on the air when GSN started, the Richard Dawson-hosted 1994-1995 season of Feud and all of TPiR had to be purchased in a more expensive second contract. In 2000, the head of GSN at the time simply let the contract lapse, and they do not want to pick it up again due to the cost.

With that out of the way, Bob's retirement is one of those instances when you can say that an era is truly coming to a close. It only proves his extraordinary talent to consider his legendary run---35 years on TPiR, and a full FIFTY STRAIGHT on TV. Yes, he's been on our televisions every weekday since 1956. Bob's done a lot more than simply become one of the greatest TV icons, running the gamut from successful activist to a beloved personality by generations, even through the flops in his career (1967's "The Family Game," a failed pilot called "Simon Says" in 1971, "That's My Line!" in 1982 to name some) He's going to be truly missed. I do however find consolation in one thing. I have seen his almost-certain successor, Todd Newton, in action at the TPiR Live show in Atlantic City. If Todd does indeed take the microphone as Bob's successor, I can safely say that the show's in good hands.

(Oh, and Al: Louie Anderson is a comedian who hosted Family Feud from 1999-2002. And he wasn't very good.)

I wouldn't mind Marc Summers as TPIR's new emcee. He is a better host than Todd Newton IMO. And not to mention the fact that Marc is well known with Double Dare and (to some later degree, History IQ and Unwrapped).

I saw Marc in action at TPiR Live last year. I must be honest, he's a great host, but he was too-low key for me. I'm sure he's gotten better, but really---I'm split right now. :| Regardless, Todd and Marc are both great guys (I got photo ops with both! :D) and whichever gets it---assuming that it's between them---will be a good choice.

I do think that the odds are tipped in Todd's favor right now, though. Fremantle did hire him to "host" the TPiR DVD Home Game.

It boils down to a situation where they need a host for a couple of seasons. If Marc can duplicate his charm and demeanor that he had during his Double Dare days, he could get the nod.

And here's another question since you seem to know about TPIR-Live...is the minimum age requirement 18 or 21?

I do believe it was 21 because it was being conducted in casinos (and therefore fell under casino gambling laws) However, I know for a fact that people under 21 were allowed in, which is different than the show (which doesn't allow people under 18 in) So you had to be 21, but only to participate.

I agree, Double Dare Marc would be great on TPiR. A year ago he seemed to be coming out of his rut of mediocrity (Trivia Unwrapped and the god-awful WinTuition) so by now, I bet he's really cooking.

Another thing about Bob was he won't have foreign made cars as prizes. Everything is either GM, Ford, or Chrysler. It was a personal stance on his part. I wonder if they'll keep that after he retires.

Out of respect for him, it'd be nice if they did. I'm sure they're not exactly hurting for money.

SOGSH- Save Our Game Show Host!

Anyway, I never watched The Price Is Right really, but Bob Barker was a very cool television personality. Ah, I feel old now.

o_O I love TPiR (and Bob *_* me and my mother both) as much as anyone, but Bob's just retiring, not dead. =\ You /know/ it had to happen someday. Better to happen now, when a new host can be groomed.

I'm surprised he's stayed as healthy as he has for so long. And even at 82 or whatever he's still got a strong voice.
