Since the last discussion thread was eons ago (and closed down), I figured I'd give starting another a shot. Not that we're a rowdy group anyway, but all usual forum rules apply, with the additional reminder that Eldershippers are generally a multishipping lot.

For those of you not in the know, Eldershipping is Professor Oak/ Delia Ketchum (Ash's mom). We were pretty hardcore back in the day as far as fic went. I did not like the whole debate thing, preferring excuses for porn rather than reasons for war, so I'm the first to say I'm not up on all the hints. (Come on, though, didn't he go to the beach in Chronicles or something and have to bring her back a present? This one I'm misremembering)

I guess our beginning discussion question is the following, so I get to know you guys a bit:

If you ship this, what do you like about it?

Are you one of those who believe that Oak is Ash's father? Has there just got to be a reason she's always up at the lab, and shipping is as good an excuse as any? Is it just that darn cute? Tell me what you think.

Or discuss whatever you'd like, share your favorite fanart, or [insert other activity that the other shipping threads do]. I'm not picky.

LUNAR MIND MELD ENGAGE. Actually, I was just thinking about you, too! *high five*

Surprisingly, I don't think he's Ash's father either. I guess I ought to, I write toward it enough, but I just don't.

THEN WHO WAS DAD?

Thousands of others have asked, and we've come to the consensus of "Dunno." I do know that he makes a good father figure, if nothing else. A plus for this on Delia's side is that he does show concern for her kid. Is his attention above and beyond what would be normal?

(But wait, 4ever completely negates that line of thought. His attention is above and beyond what's normal because he knows that Ash was his past buddy.)

...Yeah, they're adorable!

I don't think he's Ash's father, but I do get the "more than friends" vibe from them. And yeah, she does spend a lot of time at the lab. (If Samuel isn't Delia's boyfriend, he's certainly become her "coffee klatch" buddy, which is awfully cute. :ksmile:) Also, I like Eldershipping because - despite the fact that Sam is old enough to be Delia's father - the power dynamic still feels very equal. Professor Oak treats ten year olds as equals, after all, so a 27-30 year old wouldn't be any different.

And is it mercenary to admit that I like Eldershipping stories because Tracey's usually around in them? :)rolleyes: @ my own fangirl obsessiveness....)

...I just wish Glorious Revolution were still being updated. It inspired me to write a MST and everything, and now I have no where to put it....*sigh*

YAY! More people have come to the thread! Welcome, everybody!

There are days when I miss my little webpage too. I just don't have the time or the internet skills to keep it going and make it look pretty. Somebody want the stuff ('ve still got the stuff!) and want me on board in an advisory role? Let me know and we'll talk...

Meanwhile, our informal poll seems to reveal that no one thinks he's Ash's dad. That's pretty interesting. Anybody think they knew each other before Ash came along, or is this something that happened while the kid was away? Tell me your version of "how they met."

(I love the coffee klatch buddy thing.)

As a kid I always thought Delia and Professor Oak would get together, lol.

I dont think Oak is Ash's Dad. He had a lot of oppurtunities to tell Ash he is his dad, so i dont think so. I think he sees Ash like a son to him almost. It would also make Ash and Gary related which is kinda wierd. It would be quite the secret to keep.Delia and Oak could have a thing, and i think thats kinda cute.

Well, we know Delia knew Professor Oak before she had Ash; she looked about fifteen in that one photo with younger Sam & Spencer Hale. I suspect she was Samuel's assistant, or at least helped part-time around the lab.

My personal background for her is that she was thinking of becoming a Pokemon Breeder, but gave it up when she got pregnant with Ash; she and Ash's father had to marry quickly, but Mr. Ketchum only stayed in Pallet for a year or two to help with the baby before going back out on his journey - at which point both he and Delia knew they weren't suited for each other, and they divorced (amicably).

Somewhere in there Samuel stopped seeing her as a kid and started seeing her as an adult - I actually think that may not have happened until after Ash went on his journey. (I've got one story half-done where Samuel invites all the people that Pikachu fried outside his gate in the first episode to come in and have a cup of tea to recover, but only Delia took him up on it, which gave them a chance to renew their friendship...and the seeds of a deeper relationship were sown. :ksmile:)

You tryin' to call us old...?

:dodgy:

Hold still so I can whack you with my cane.

(j/k! :XD:)

Yeah, Solomon, we're still around! We go and come, though, which is while you lost track of us for a while. Who were you?

(Speak for yourself, Shiny: granny here just turned 32 and feels 50 )

Well, I'm heartened that people are still around and Eldershipping and thinking of the Brigade with great fondness. We tried very hard not to be batshit! (Well, everyone else didn't. I was the angst magnet.)

I suggest you finish that fic, Shiny! We all do still love our fic, right? We've still got the Compendium over at ff.net! :D? :D?

I hesitate to say something about it here, lest I jynx--wait, jinx--myself, but I started writing this thing a couple of weeks ago that was all Haleshipping vs. Eldershipping and Angsty Sam and generally bad writing. Hey, it's the first completely new thing I've done in years. gimme a break. Plus, there is overblown smut of both varieties. :D? (/oversharing)

Whippersnapper.

I remember being 32...had my first "oh shit I'm old!" moment, because I realized I was as old as Valentine guessed himself to be in Lord Valentine's Castle...which seemed unimaginably old to me when I first read it, at 15.

Now I'm even older, but I feel 15 (emotionally, if not physically), so everything's peachy-keen! :p

Oh, it needs major work. The Eldershippy part of it is just a little scenelet, anyway. But I've got this other story where the Sam&Delia stuff is much more prominent. It gets PG-13 with them and everything. :-D It's about half finished....

I sincerely doubt anything you wrote could be "bad writing." So go for it!

This is, more or less, how I felt their relationship developed. Of the few anime hints I remember, she would occasionally show up at his lab, but there wasn't apparently any reason (apart from the fact that they liked each other) for her to be there.

I need to start writing again.

*waves* Hi, LW!

OH, WOW, IT'S BARB! :yahoo: Barb is one of us, too. She's a good writer, and we love her. (So yes, you do need to start writing again I remember that fic you started... sad, but so well-written.)

Bringing up the hints really makes me wonder--when were they last in an episode, anyway?

I did catch a few of the Chronicles eps (mainly because parties who knew I was interested let me know that they were coming up), but I can't remember when they were last in the show. Did they show up at all in Advance? DP? Any of those later movies? Man, I am behind. I would assume that they're about to make a cameo with this new season coming up.

If they haven't shown up for a while, that makes sense. Ash is growing up and changing and not wanting/ needing to check in with the parent. (That also means we can just read it as "Having Uninterrupted Potential Love Nest, Yahoo" for a while and go from there.)

I dunno, I kept switching usernames a lot. The Eldershippers showing up is kinda a blast from the past though - I wasn't a real part of the group (never was much into shippings, and back then it was the argument of the day instead of just which main girl is most feminist or whatever the hell).

And yeah, Barb can write quite well. Anyone know when Ilex bowed out of here? She wrote a LOT.

Oh, my word. Ilex bowed out around 2004, I think? (Which really is EONS ago--this stuff seems like yesterday.) I was always the one who gathered the stuff, but she was really the one who got people into the fold because she just wrote it that well. Around that time, she had mentioned that she wanted to start writing children's books. I wonder if she ever did? Her first name was Holly, but I don't think I ever knew her last name, so I can't look her up that way... Maybe I ought to try dropping her an email and see if I get a response.

You're always welcome here, Solomon! As far as I can tell, we still automatically assume our people are feminist (I guess?), and we just come out from our hideyholes every so often, check out the scene, and go back into hiding. I hope we all stick around this time, though--everybody seems pretty chill.

Sorry; I hope I'm not violating the no double posts rule, but I figure a few days have passed...

I tried to find Ilex at her ilexshipper email address, but alas, no good. It said that email didn't exist. :( So if anyone has any contact with her at all that I don't have, please tell her we love and miss her and hope she is doing well.

Next, I just wanted to point out that we do have the Compendium over at ff.net, in case you're really jonesing for something to read. Nothing really new there (except I found some fics by someone named Solent--anybody know her?), but at least it's something. Remember, reviews are love, so leave some for fics you enjoy today!

I'm still not quite sure where I'm going with this revitalization thing, but I guess I'll keep you posted. :D?

As a kid I always thought Delia and Professor Oak would get together, lol.

This ship has been around for as long as I can remember. It makes sense but has anyone thought that maybe Mrs. Ketchum was married to someone? Since they call her Mrs. as a sign or being married.
