Gen I VC Discussion Thread

After spending a while in the Safari Zone on Blue... I finally got my last team member! It's currently a level 16 Dratini. I've beaten the Fuschia Gym and got the 5th badge, but right now I'm currently training up my Dratini to get it caught up with everyone else.

My team right now is:
  • Level 38 Blastoise
  • Level 38 Fearow
  • Level 38 Persian
  • Level 37 Jolteon
  • Level 37 Vulpix
  • Level 16 Dratini
Once I get back to Celadon City I'm grabbing a Fire Stone and evolving Vulpix.

I've finally settled on the perfect partners for my experiences through Kanto in Red and Blue:

Red: Charizard, Nidoking, Vileplume, Slowbro, Kangaskhan, Hitmonlee, Scyther and Zapdos

Blue: Blastoise, Nidoqueen, Ninetales, Persian, Exeggutor, Hitmonchan, Gengar and Articuno

I am, however, giving much more thought to my party in Yellow, and I've come up with a few potential builds:

Yellow Build 1: Pikachu, Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Poliwrath, Clefable, Venomoth, Dragonite, Golem and Jynx

Yellow Build 2: Pikachu, Venusaur, Moltres, Lapras, Poliwrath, Clefable, Venomoth, Dragonite, Golem and Mew

Yellow Build 3: Pikachu, Victreebel, Arcanine, Lapras, Poliwrath, Clefable, Venomoth, Dragonite, Golem and Mew

As you can see, the Grass-, Fire-, Water- and Psychic-type Pokémon vary from build to build, and it's challenging for me to choose one about which I'm completely sure. There's also the matter of whether I feel the method for getting Mew is "honest" (or just plain difficult to find), meaning I may end up chickening out on catching it. Lastly, I may end up replacing Dragonite, Golem and the Psychic-type I would have chosen with Dugtrio, since it's far simpler to manage a party of eight Pokémon than ten.

One thing I have learned, though, is that building a specialised team of Pokémon partners is just as fun in the originals as it is in newer games. I've also learned not to pre-plan my parties too much, as those plans can change if I opt for a Pokémon I may not have considered before.

Case in point: I've switched out my Clefairy in Red with my newly-caught Lv. 25 Kangaskhan, GARU. Her Attack, Defense and Speed stats are each about 50, making her a strong and valued addition to my party. I look forward to using her in my upcoming battles!

I started Red today. I chose Squirtle as my starter this time and sped through up to Cerulean, so I had to be careful not to get it too high a level before I caught an Oddish. I'm in Vermilion at over 4 hours with a Diglett. I have my bike and I'm ready for a cruise.

This time my Pokemon nicknames are going to have an ancient Greek motif

Aesop - 23 Cybele - 21 Eupalinos - 20

So I was heading to Celadon via Fushia City through the Cycling Road (don't know why they made it a down-hill only road as if no one from Fushia would ever want to go to Celadon) and I just couldn't resist

I think butterfree is your best bet, if you can get him to learn confusion

Bug/Flying against rock? Edit: I forgot the moveset of Brock's pokemon include no rock moves.

I just realized Mankey can be captured. Years of playing the newer generations, I forget how primitive Gen I is in comparison.

yup! no rock moves, the idea is to use an attack that deals special damage to get past his crazy defence.

or, yeah, mankey works too

kids these days, am I right? [/sarcasm] :)

What's a good Pokemon to catch for the first gym battle with Brock in Pokemon yellow?

I caught both types of Nidoran, since they learn Double Kick at Lv. 12 in Yellow. Nidoran♀ made short work of Brock's Geodude, and Nidoran♂ brought down Brock's Onix in one-and-a-half hits.

good point! I sometimes forget that pokemon had different move sets in yellow

Oh boy, I can finally play Gen I games knowing how to actually play! And I mean not on old Gen I cartridges that have been overused and are just plain dying..

Yellow it is, and I'm going for: Nidoking, Poliwrath, Rhydon, Tauros, Charizard, Venusaur :D ooooh yeaaaaaaah

I conquered Pokémon Tower in Blue yesterday, and I was lucky enough to find a Haunter, then a Cubone immediately afterward, as I rushed through 3F! I wanted a Gengar for my party, so my Haunter (nicknamed GOSU) is now an official member of Team John. The moment I got the Poké Flute, I went to the Safari Zone to snag an Exeggcute for my party, and would you believe it was the very first Pokémon I encountered? With the addition of my Exeggcute (nicknamed TAMA), I now have a full assortment of Pokémon for my party:

ZENI (Wartortle) Lv. 27
NIDO-SAN (Nidoqueen) Lv. 27
ROKO (Vulpix) Lv. 26
NYAR (Meowth) Lv. 26
GOSU (Haunter) Lv. 27
TAMA (Exeggcute) Lv. 25

All that's missing from my party is Hitmonchan and Articuno, plus I'm considering Parasect and Magneton as well.

I find myself wanting to use all these weak Pokemon simply because I like them. I've got Perry the Parasect and Omega the Primeape, which I know are pretty bad in these games because of moves (in Perry's case, bad stats don't help). There are so many moments that's like "what, voltorb doesn't even learn any electric attacks by level up??" Sigh, picking my team is hard.

About to head into Victory Road right now! Almost done with my journey in Blue... After that I'll try completing the Pokedex and start on Pokemon Red.

My team right now is...
  • Level 45 Blastoise
  • Level 43 Fearow
  • Level 42 Persian
  • Level 44 Ninetales
  • Level 43 Jolteon
  • Level 45 Dragonair

how has everyone been handling HM moves without the convenience of the Move Deleter? particularly Cut and Flash, which you need to get around but don't want stuck with your pokemon forever

The short answer: HM helpers.

yeah, I carried an extra 2 pokemon with me to use cut and flash to get past the dark cave. But, like, I want to have my whole party with me when I cross victory road and other dungeons. Flash really won't be an issue, I think, but I really don't want one of my pokemon to be burdened with cut for the rest of the game. haha

I'm usually a Gen I elitist, but man the Move Deleter was a nice addition to the later games :p

at least Surf and Strength are decent moves!

I've made a little more progress in Yellow, adding SAUR the Bulbasaur to my fledgling Pokémon party and whupping GARY's butt yet again. I've also decided on which other Pokémon to train: a Lapras nicknamed "NESS"; a Poliwrath nicknamed "POLI"; a Venomoth nicknamed "VENO"; and a Moltres nicknamed "FYRE".

As for that eighth slot, it's a toss-up between three: a Dodrio nicknamed "DODO"; a Fearow nicknamed "AROW"; or a Dugtrio nicknamed "DIG-DUG". I'm leaning more towards the first and third options though.
