How Respect works in this world

It has been said that respect is earned, not given, and i can, more or less, understand that. But as i've said before (due to being bullied a lot), even if you don't respect someone, does that really give you the right to treat them like dirt? Even if respect isn't present, couldn't one at least show someone some consideration?

And for that matter, many of the young are expected to instantly show respect to someone older them upon first meeting them. Why? Why should we respect someone we don't even know or even worse an elder who treats us badly?

Just something to think about?
