I probably wouldn't stay cooped up at the league, and would probably be out wandering the region. The player could possibly encounter me once or twice in the field with my Boltund by my side. I would probably be scouting out the new trainers, using a smaller and unevolved team to battle them, not revealing my position as an elite 4 member. Then the player reaches the Elite 4 and I'm there to greet them.

Oh karp, now I gotta make a new trainer OC because I actually really like this idea lol.
