I think that they lowered the stakes.

The past mission sounded more challenging.

but we really don’t know that much about the Project yet, despite knowing about it for more than half a year…
This is because the writers themselves don't exactly know what they want it to even be. Yet, anyway. Which possibly explains the focus Ash has been getting with his goal, since it's more tangible and better defined.

Drake returning means every series has a bit of continuity here. That is if Drake recognises Ash or vice versa
My hopes aren't high on that after how Steven's return in XY brought precisely zero continuity whatsoever. Even if the situation was a bit wild in Kalos, he and Ash didn't seem to recognise each other, and the TRio conveniently forgot they've met him before too. Jessie was even outright simping for him despite being sent blasting off by his Aggron that time. There's "playing hard to get" and then there's "shooting Hyper Beam at you".

And if there's anything some recent Journeys episodes have taught me, it's that my personal criticisms of XY have went unheard.

XY's lack of continuity with previous series was an accident on the writers' part. Journeys is definitely doing better with referencing past events and encounters.

I feel like people make a bigger deal out of that than it is. Sure, from an out of universe standpoint it’s frustrating, but in universe this was Ash bumping into some guy he met in a cave once a continent away. I can totally see anyone not recognizing Steven in this position, especially during a country-wide crisis.

Why would people assume Drake and Ash won’t recognize each other for continuity? That’s literally the only reason the writers probably chose to bring Drake back for this over any of the other Elite 4 who never appeared in the show. And we had even Chuck recognize Ash

Honestly, I can't help but feel like people are overthinking/expecting a little too much out of Drake's appearance.

Yeah he battled Ash and will most likely remember him, just the fact that he's showing up in a Goh centric episode (and he wasn't even in the Teaser for that matter) makes me feel that Drake won't be giving too much focus to Ash nor amount to more than just a cameo unfortunately

I have a feeling his involvement could easily be important in some way, since Kingdra is a Dragon Pokémon.

I don’t think Drake and Ash will battle here anyway there’s no point.

Why is there a need to reference past series?
XY was fine being on its own and proved that nostalgia is not that important.

I wouldn't blame the writers, or Satoshi, for forgetting about Daigo.
His AG debut episode was so irrelevant/unremarkable, it even can pass as a filler.
It could even said that his reappearance in the Mega-Specials is his real debut.

Honestly, I don't expect so much of Genji's return. But I am still going to watch this one.
Not having Satoshi appear in this one would have been ideal.

I obviously meant that it wasn't an accident. The writers aren't incompetent; they chose not even to reference Charizard, let alone bring it back.
I personally choose to believe the statement about it being an accident. I can really only remember one or two past series references in XY.

Many people like continuity. That's why references and flashbacks are so beloved amongst many fans.

Ash needs to battle an Elite Four member, but I don't think it should be another Dragon specialist. I guess that we're supposed to think of Raihan and Lance as being Elite Four level...

I doubt Ash will battle Drake here. He'll probably just help in the Trial Mission. As for Raihan and Lance; Raihan is said to be Champion-level in the games, and Lance has been confirmed to be an Elite Four member in Journeys.

XY was fine on its own but it really bothered me that it had barely any references to last series. They could have Ash use or recall his old Pokémon and have an ORAS arc with May and Max. Charizard return would fit better in XY than BW since Alain has a Charizard.
