If this is any indication, Lapras is part of Ash's team. As well as Gengar. And the Kanto Starters.

Who wants to bet that Gengar will be the Haunter form Sabrina's gym match?

I think that's the one! It'll be nice to see how they'll handle a simple trade evolution in the movie! (Politoed was a bit easier for them to get around due to the King's rock requirement. There's no loophole now imo)

Howso? Because the picture you may be referring to contains Grimer, not Muk. And as @SammyW27 said, it's likely just the World of Pokemon segment.
Now that you mention a world of Pokemon segment, that would actually be a great time to show the other travelling companions from the anime's run. Not necessarily with Ash (to avoid confusing new viewers), but just giving them cameos would do a good deal to make this a more meaningful 20th anniversary celebration. Not to mention, instead of just showing Brock and Misty, they could show everyone.

I mean I know they won't do anything like this, but it's fun to dream. :p

Now that would be sweet.

If we're gonna get an alternate universe, may as well do some things totally different!

Heck, for all we know this time Butterfree sticks around.

Misty, Brock, and now Pidgeotto. Nobody is safe.

Eh, it's not like she ever amounted to much. :p
Poor gal was arguably Ash's worst or most useless Pokemon :(

Lapras can't fight on land, so wouldn't it be useless to Ash?

In the Orange Islands, he used it for transportation, and I think there were some battles with the Gyms that allowed Lapras to be use.

According to the Marshadow distribution poster, it doesn't.

Actually, we have seen some Lapras in the past that can fight decently on land. They tend to either take hits and fight back, or to resort to more unconventional ways to move around, like freezing the floor.

It certainly has better chances to fight on land that fish-like Pokémon, like Goldeen and Sharpedo.

I'd kindly disagree here.
Pidgeotto was a nice regional bird, and very useful to Ash. Heck, had it not been for it, Ash wouldn't have even reached the Indigo league stadium at time!
And, on Pidgeot's last episode, I think that someone said something to the effect of "I wish Charizard would be as obedient as Pidgeotto"
If that line is true (I don't remember clearly), then Pidgeot was one of Ash's most obeidient Pokemon.

Pidgeotto was a good Pokémon to ash and that line was there

What a load of bull! (The thing that infuriates me most is the return to prominence of that bastard Pocchama and bipedal fantasy object Lucario, over Satoshi's wonderful, classic, underrated other Kanto starters.)
Well maybe it was different in the movie. Remember the Mega Sableye that was on one of the early M19 posters? But, personally, I'm glad Lucario is in, but I still hope the starters appear just as much as Lucario.

They're underrated relative to Pikachu, Charizard, Piplup and Lucario.

And I wouldn't be surprised if they were just wild Pokemon. Either way, both they and the beast trio are not going to get much screentime.
