Gen IV: DPPt were easily the weakest in the series for me - too slow, weak creature design, suffered from Gen II's tendency to staple new things onto old things instead of tranforming them into a new, unique whole, only moreso.
That said:
1) It was more story-driven than any game in the series to that point - I forget this all the time, but having Professor Rowan call you into the Canalave library was sooooo coooool.
2) It also embraced the "Pokémon as mythical creatures" thing that Gens V and VI ran with. Plus, that led to things like the books in the Canalave library - very creepy, very cool.
3) HGSS! To be quite honest, HeartGold and SoulSilver represent a technical high for the series that it's never quite reclaimed. Having your Pokémon follow you was cool, the touchscreen was implemented better than it was in any game before or since, little things like the GB Player represented fanservice done right, and an overflow of great bonus content set the bar high for future remakes.
4) The Underground multiplayer - kind of underloved, imo. It allowed secret bases to exist in some capacity, and the mining was somewhat enjoyable, if for nothing else at least for the large amount of fossils, evolution stones, and shards you could accumulate.
5) Some of the new evolutions were good. Definitely not all, but some - Roserade, Togekiss, and the Eeveelutions stand out in particular.
