Well, Here's mine...
Pokemon Crystal. My first game, and my favorite. The memories attached to that game are indescribable. So when HeartGold and SoulSilver came out, I went out and bought HeartGold. I played it non-stop, and I was ecstatic when I got GB Sounds. I immediately turned it on and walked through all of Johto just for the nostalgia. Listening to this music really made me want to play Crystal again, for old time’s sake.
I finally managed to find Crystal, in a box of junk underneath my desk. I picked it up and grabbed my Game Boy Advance and popped the cartridge in. I turned it on, and watched the intro, and watched the silhouette of Suicune running for about 5 minutes, as I remember doing back when I was a little kid. I finally pressed the A button, and sadly found no option to continue a previously saved game. Dammit, I thought, the internal battery must’ve ran dry after all these years. A few hours later, and after watching a few tutorials on how to change the internal battery for Gen II, I finally fixed Crystal, and it started up perfectly fine.
I skipped the intro and was eager to start a new game, but what I saw shocked me.
My old save file. From YEARS ago. Now an option to continue it.
I didn’t know how it was possible that it came back, but I wasn’t going to question why. Just for nostalgia’s sake, I pressed A to continue my game. “Maddy, Time- 254:47, Badges- 7, Pokedex- 10.” I smiled to myself. Back when I was 7 years old, I was a horrible at playing pokemon. I started off in Ice Path, seemingly stuck in a corner on the ice. I remember being so frustrated with this, I thought to myself, and then easily slid back to normal ground. I then pressed start, and scrolled down to my team. I then laughed out loud. Abby, my level 48 Typhlosion, a level 3 Hoothoot, a level 2 Rattata, and a level 6 Wooper.
I always trained my starter, and nothing else. Oh well. I wandered around the Ice Path for a while, and had no idea where I was. I pressed Start again, hoping for find an Escape Rope in my bag or something, but I never found out. The option selected was to look at my party, and I couldn’t scroll up or down to do anything else. So I pressed B and closed the menu. I started wandering around some more, and was soon engaged in a battle with a Jynx. Abby was sent out, of course, it was always first in my party. I chose to attack with Flame Wheel, that move made the coolest sound. But instead of Abby attacking, the text read, “Abby ignored orders!”. Maybe it’s level was too high? Then more text appeared.
“ABBY: You’re finally back…”
I froze. I had no idea what to do. What else could I do? I kept pressing A, and Reading what Abby had to say.
“Why did you leave for so long?”
“We had the best time journeying through Johto.”
“I’m so glad you came back.”
A feeling of guilt swept over me as I thought of Flame, my Typhlosion on HeartGold. Abby was waiting here for me this long?
Abby’s sprite turned around and faced me. It’s eyes a deep red and the collar of flames around its neck flaring up.
“You’ll never leave me again.”
At this point, I was thinking of what I could do to stop the game. This was getting freaky. The Jynx in the background silently slid off the screen, as it was running away. Abby’s eyes were glowing red, an intent stare straight into my blue/grey eyes, unnerving me slightly. I won’t let this dumb game get the best of me, I thought as I flipped the power switch off on my GBA. Nothing happened.
“Don’t even try” the text read as Abby’s eyes narrowed, as if it was angry.
I rapidly began to press the A button. Abby moved closer and closer every time I pressed it. I stopped. There’s only one thing that I can try, it’s the only thing left I can do. I turned my GBA around and reached for the cartridge, when Typlosion’s fainting cry rang out through the silent air so loud that I dropped my GBA. It landed right side up, the whole screen illuminated by Abby’s blood red eyes.
“DON’T DO THIS TO ME!” Abby pleaded.
I have to. With shaky hands, I picked up the GBA and gripped the cartridge. I shut my eyes, and pulled on the cartridge. It wouldn’t budge. Typhlosion’s fainting cry grew louder and louder. I pulled as hard as I could on the game until my knuckles turned white.
I was just about to scream in frustration when I heard the satisfying ‘click’ of game being separated from GBA, and it was over. I dropped the game onto my bed, staring blankly at the light blue sparkly cartridge with Suicune looking exceptionally epic on it. I glanced over to my GBA. Abby’s red eyes still showed on the screen. It takes a while to fade away, I reminded myself. I picked up the empty GBA and turned it on, hopefully making the red eyes go away.
They didn’t.
To this day, the red eyes still remain, and instead of the pleasant sound of the Gameboy advance title screen, Typhlosion’s fainting cry is played.
Since then, I have released Flame on HeartGold, and walking through the Ice Path will never be the same again.
As for the actual Crystal game, I removed the internal battery, and returned it to it's box of junk under my desk, along with my GBA. From time to time, I still think about what happened, and I regret ever trying to fix Crystal. Maybe when something it broken, there's a good reason why...
