Pokémon Evolution/Capture/Release Thread

Primeape is a very powerful fighting type with a base stat total of 455. I know. I have used one in some challenge runs in Let's Go, Pikachu. With 105 Attack, it can hit hard with physical attacks. Sure, it might not one shot EVERYTHING, but it will likely knock out anything weak to fighting.
Probably why they had Ash get rid of it as they were starting to bond, it would have been easy to have Ash win battles with it, same reason they probably made Charizard disobedient at first

Eh, that just sounds kinda lazy to me. They could have found a way around it if they tried, I think. (And that doesn't at all excuse Primeape's ludicrously long absence from the anime, that you can definitely chalk up to the writers just forgetting about it.)

The "too strong" excuse seems a bit iffy to me because the anime loves to take artistic lisence with how it portrays the strength of certain species (in the games Starmie was a top-tier Water-type and the one Misty uses was a pretty brutal early game boss as a result, but the anime makes it look like an absolute chump), so it's not like they couldn't have just... not made Primape too overwhelmingly good. I mean, it's not like it would've been too hard, since Primape was the smallest fully evolved Fighting-type at the time, so it couldn't have possibly been that difficult to put it in an outmatched underdog situation.

Furthermore, if we're going to bring up the games as an excuse to drop Primeape, I feel it's important to point out that Fighting was by far one of the weakest types in Gen 1 due to a lack of good Fighting-type moves to abuse (the only decently-powered one with wide distribution was Submission, which gives the user recoil damage and doesn't even have perfect accuracy) and the fact that its main counter, the Psychic-type, was absurdly overpowered and dominant at the time, so I really don't see why Ash having one would've skewed things in his favor that much. With all of this in mind, Ash having to let go of Primeape but getting to keep Snorlax and a whole herd of Tauros (both being species that at the time were among the top five strongest non-Mew or Mewtwo Pokemon), just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Exactly. It wasn't that Primeape was "too strong" or anything like that. It was literally just them being lazy.

Maybe they had to work better on how Primeape fits the other trainer, with its dream etc.

Honestly, as much as I'll defend the general storyline of gen 1 it was pretty bad in terms of how it treated the Pokémon themselves. Pikachu and the Kanto trio were the main focuses among the protagonists and everyone else was just sort of there once their intro storyline was finished.
Looking at AG even Torkoal was given a bit more care than Primeape or Tauros.

I mean... considering they initially planned for Bulbasaur to go all the way and Tauros being a permanent teammember... which amounted to nothing... Ash couldn't have realistically lost with 3 of the most OP Kanto mons in his arsenal (4 if we count Primeape).

The OP part will always be a problem. But they did 'try' to show how Charizard need some more training with higher lvl pokemon (Charizards).

I guess Bulbasaur and Squirtle got high lvl, but max as strong as Ivysaur and Wartortle (anyway Pikachu lost to a 5 lvl Snivy so I will stop there)

Never.

Kanto: 4 evolutions, 2 final forms missing.
Johto: 5 (4 post DP) evolutions, 3 final forms missing.
Hoenn: 1 evolution & final form missing.
Sinnoh: 2 evolutions, 1 final form missing.
Unova: 5 evolutions, 3 final forms missing.
Kalos: 3 (2 post JN) evolutions, 2 (1 post JN) final forms missing.
Alola: 2 evolutions, 1 final form missing.
Galar: 2 evolutions, 1 final form missing.

It's still such a shame that they couldn't give Brock a Swampert. That felt like the most plausible case where they could have had all three starters fully evolved among the main cast, even if May's Combusken didn't evolve until near the end of AG.

As cool as it would be to see the Paldea starters all fully evolve, especially when I really like all three evolution lines, I don't see that happening. They'd probably want at least one starter to remain unevolved to stay more marketable.

And that is probably gonna be Quaxly, basing it off the recent popularity Poll... which is a shame... since that would mean the Water starter curse would carry over from Ash to Roy

when was the last time the main characters had all three fully evolved starters between them?
I know you were talking about the gang, anyway Leon is the only case I can remember a main character/ rival got all 3 of his region fully evolved.

Hard to believe Hoenn was the closest we came to get every starter owned by a main character full evolved
Well, the very, very end of Hoenn anyway. (And technically, it was Kanto, since it was the end of Battle Frontier by the time May's Combusken evolved.)

Ash caught some his team with some moves.
