I agree with you. I have both, but prefer Vigoroth becuase it doesn't fall asleep and it's great being able to put an Eviolite on it. I do this for my Dragonair too since it doesn't get the added damage from Ice if I were to evolve it into a Dragonite. Mid evolution Pokemon are viable.
I feel Vigoroth is better as well. Slaking may be extremely powerful, but that Traunt ability can really make or break a battle (for me, when I use it, it's usually break). I just feel that your opponent can take the opportunity to trounce you while it's loafing about, which will put a major crimp in your day. I know it's used to limit its immense power, but that's what turns me off about Slaking. At least Vigoroth can gain benefits from the Evolite, doesn't have that "down time" Slaking has, and Vital Spirit can be very helpful over the crippling Traunt. So, yeah, Vigoroth is much better, so you've got the right idea.
