Masuda: As for why we’re releasing two, we thought of a game mechanic to include when we were developing Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version, but we didn’t have enough time to do it. We needed two games for that, so this time we decided to make two.
Iwata: So that’s why you made two.
Masuda: Yes. A little later, we thought of making them sequels. When you told me that if we were going to release something for the Nintendo DS system, we had to come up with something new, I was really worried. (laughs) Then I thought, “How about sequels?”
Now that Iwata is dead Masuda doesn't need to worry as much as before... Kimishima probably just cares about the last 3DS games being profitable enough without stealing too many resources from the Switch project.
I could go on and on about this topic, but I'll shorten my feelings:
The fact that Masuda is so obvious about wanting to reuse and rehash old content, and worried about the idea of making new kinds of quality content and progressing forward, both confirms my previous suspicions and speaks very poorly of his character as a game developer. Pokemon has so much more potential than GF is willing to put into it, it seems, and it's so disappointing. I'm very tired of Masuda being director/producer. He should stick to music composition like he used to, or something. GF really needs to hire more young employees--people in their 20's who grew up a huge fans of the series and have a lot of new ideas and ambition to make Pokemon great. Heck, I've seen so many ideas for how to improve Pokemon online--whether it's fan games, fan art, blogs and posts, etc. and the fans have so many amazing ideas.
