GameFreak's "we still want to be smol indie company" actually originates from Gunpei Yokoi's "Lateral thinking with withered technology" approach, and as with all things Nintendo they will probably never change it.

Ed: That said I don't think GF is changing anytime soon because there's no incentive to.
What game is it that they have on Steam?Yes, they have a single game on Steam which, based on the number of reviews, must have resulted in a loss.
The reality is that they are dependent on the Pokémon franchise and, subsequently, Nintendo. However, they have been squirming for years for a little more freedom.
A few, actually. What game is it that they have on Steam?
A few, actually.
the issue is that every pokemon is someone's favorite. My favorite (Whiscash) has fortunately made it into every game since its introduction, but i can imagine people might not like it if the pokemon they love most can't join their team in the most recent gameWe don't need all the pokemon in every game. Mighty keef put it best when dexit happened "I was just gonna catch 20 of those ******s and call it a day." When have you ever played a pokemon game and used it's entire dex? Even after having played it a dozen times. Even in games with all the pokemon, say you decided "I wanna play cyndaquil in x and y" you had to A. Get it from Bank from HGSS (no longer an option)
B trade it from ORAS
You had to go out of your way to get it early enough in the game where it's not immediately pointless by playing another game first. And at that point play that game that gives you access to cyndaquil. (this can be applied to any pokemon in a non dexit game this is just an example, don't get me started on using cyndaquil in any gen 3 game)
not in real life, where it's important to expand your horizons and step out of your comfort zone once in a while, but i fail to see how it isn't harmless in the context of pokemon? And? always being able to use you favourite isn't neccesairily a good thing...
On the flip side, being forced to use other options could lead players to develop fondness for new Pokémon.the issue is that every pokemon is someone's favorite. true; i usually first do a run using only new guys before i ever do a playthrough where i use all my old favorites. Gained quite a love for Ceruledge the last time around. For the record, i was playing devil's advocate when giving my arguments against Dexit; i think it was inevitable and i don't hold it against GFOn the flip side, being forced to use other options could lead players to develop fondness for new Pokémon.
Just one of the reasons Black and White was so so great in my opinion, as it forced people to use the new Pokemon instead of just being able to use your beloved (insert favorite Kanto Pokemon here) for the hundrenth time.On the flip side, being forced to use other options could lead players to develop fondness for new Pokémon.
Same. White was my first Pokémon game in 8 years, and I found it more enjoyable to basically wing it with the new ‘Mons instead of falling back on what i already knew.Just one of the reasons Black and White was so so great in my opinion, as it forced people to use the new Pokemon instead of just being able to use your beloved (insert favorite Kanto Pokemon here) for the hundrenth time.
Well, some people just don't work that way; I've personally never fallen in love with a Pokémon I'm only using because the one I actually wanted isn't available; necessity isn't going to make me suddenly like a design I found unappealing or the way it works in-game (there are some franchises where that sort of things happened for me, but something about the way mainline Pokémon's SP is built seems to prevent it).On the flip side, being forced to use other options could lead players to develop fondness for new Pokémon.
Interestingly enough, the B/W thing I believe was meant to be done as far back as the third generation, which explains why there aren’t that many returning Pokémon in the Hoenn region.Well, some people just don't work that way; I've personally never fallen in love with a Pokémon I'm only using because the one I actually wanted isn't available; necessity isn't going to make me suddenly like a design I found unappealing or the way it works in-game (there are some franchises where that sort of things happened for me, but something about the way mainline Pokémon's SP is built seems to prevent it).
Edit: The split version thing is also relevant, I think. For instance I liked Medicham's design but my 3rd gen game was Emerald; if the series always did the B/W thing I'd have just never had an opportunity to use Medicham.
