  • question for those of you playing it: Would I still like Legends if I'm not a fan of the open world genre? I couldn't get into BotW so I steered clear of PLA, but I've heard nothing but glowing praise about it so far and it kinda makes me wonder if I'm missing out for no reason lol

(also how's the battle system? I actually like the turn-based combat of the core series, so the real-time stuff intimidates me a bit. Maybe I just haven't seen enough of it.)

It's actually not an open-world game. It plays more like Monster Hunter, where you have a "base" and the different areas are sectioned into chunks that you can instantly fast-travel to from said "base". You can explore each area to your heart's content but the game still has a linear path that you need to take, especially early on, something that most open-world games don't really have. So, unlike BotW, this game is both open and linear, where you're free to roam in any given area but you do have a set path to take.

And as for the battle system, it has a distinct Final Fantasy/Digimon DS vibe, where your speed not only determines turn order, but using certain moves and/or styles can alter the flow of battle, which, in turn, alters the turn order. For example, increased priority moves like Quick Attack can possibly grant you two turns in a row. Also, status ailments only remain active during the battle and vanish when the battle ends, so you don't need to heal as much. The real-time effect only is present in the main gameplay (such as catching and stealth/dodging) and triggering battles, so it doesn't really have any effect on battles themselves. The battles pretty much retain their core nature just with some extra flavor to them.

Overall, this game is one of GF's best. I highly recommend you pick it up, as it'll be worth your time.

I was actually in the same boat as you where a lot of the more open-area stuff and action-based mechanics intimidated me a bit. Tbh playing the game does stress me out a bit at times, much more than previous games. And I also couldn't get into BOTW for similar reasons, though I think a large part of that was that it was my first Zelda game. That said, I've been enjoying it for the past 11 hours. It's a different experience from what you're used to, but it doesn't feel like being thrown to the sharks like BOTW did either imo. The battle mechanics are a bit different, but still familiar, and the areas are pretty fun to explore without forcing you to if you don't want to... so far, anyway. I'm not anywhere close to being done with it.

The action-based stuff can get a bit stressful for me at times but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It's mainly just dodging and running away sometimes, which is much easier once you get Wrydeer, and that doesn't take too long.

I think it's worth a look at least, I'd say if you're nervous about it to look at some more gameplay first.

All very good to know! Yeah, I figured the map couldn't really be a "true" open world where you could just go anywhere immediately. I do get the FF comparison with the battle mechanics as well, that's kind of what it was reminding me of at a glance. I think as long as it's familiar enough and not super complicated to figure out then all should be well.

@wanderist - Sounds like you were wary of it for the exact same reasons as I am lol, but if you've been enjoying it so far that's good! I might check out some early gameplay just to get a better feel of it first, since all I really know of it was from the trailers/promotional stuff (and that honestly didn't tell me very much).

    thanks, both of you!
I think I might be one of the only people who's not playing Legends today.

...now if you'll excuse me, I need to go replay Colosseum for the fourth time /s

@takoyaki - nice! I imagine it plays pretty well on the Wii U. If I were to play it right now it'd be on my GCN or Wii, but I was totally holding out hope for a genuine Wii U port/remaster back in its time...

@more than a torchic - Crap, you've reminded me I never finished all the postgame stuff in BD. To the Grand Underground I go.

@prog rocker - I've never even looked into Switch emulation before. But I imagine my laptop would probably blow up if I did, since it can just barely handle Dolphin or Citra on a good day lol

@Poke Dragon - good luck with your joy-cons! Hopefully someday joy-con drift will be a thing of the past...

I'm still in the middle of BD/SP myself. I'll be getting Legends tomorrow, but it does feel weird to see people play the game when it still isn't the 28th in my timezone yet.

thank you guys for all the good times in 2021, my year would have looked a lot different if I didn't spend it here on BulbaForums. Here's hoping 2022 will be even better for everyone going forward :)
