I didn't know that! That's kinda interesting.
One on the Snivy family would indeed be interesting. Lots of snake references, plus the French nobility stuff.
Kinda surprised the Shiny wasn't mentioned. It's green- probably a nod to their camouflage, as mentioned in the article. Really neat when they do stuff like that with Shinies.
Re: On the Origin of Species: Nosepass and Probopass: Investigating the inspirations
Sableye is actually based on the Hopkinsville Goblin. I did a write up on the origin of Sableye here that goes into moderate detail on how it is based on it. Still, a writeup from Hutcheon would be welcome.
Re: On the Origin of Species: Nosepass and Probopass: Investigating the inspirations
I've always assumed the Iron Filaments are a reference to the toy Wooly Willy. I've no idea if it is popular or even known in Japan, though.
Regardless, it still draws some inspiration from a cat, considering its Japanese name is an onomatopoeia similar to meow. This could have come after it was designed, but its still a part of its character.
Nice article, as usual!
Simple. Buffaron and Tauros are similar animals who live in the analogues for New York and Japan. They are similar because similar animals live all over the world, but often you can only find a specific species in one location.
The Karate and Judo Pokemon are reminiscent of Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan- Pokemon with similar names who represent differing martial arts.
The case can be made that the garbage bag Pokemon are inspired by Grimer and Muk.
Some of these, such as the Tamagatake line and Emonga fall into...
The post about the Rankurusu family has already gone up, and can be seen here SuperSeaking said the stuff about them being cells better than I ever could.
And before anyone says this should I been a PM, I tried to send it via PM. Don't have enough posts yet, though.
The cells are also based on the Medeivil concept of the Homonculus- basically their understanding of sperm cells. Rankurusu's name even seems to contain a version of the word homonculus.
I've got a topic about Pokemon origins on another forum- mind if I copy/paste your post there? I'll give...
Re: Confirmed New Pokémon Discussion
This is true. But this is also Pokemon- hard science isn't really a part of the series, just exaggerations. I like the idea of it being the absence of energy, however. Cold is nothing but the absence of molecular movement, which is definitely a lack of...
Re: Confirmed New Pokémon Discussion
Gen II had the Legendary Beasts, though. So it did have a trio. Plus, Gen I had the birds and Gen III had the Regis and Gen IV had the Lake trio. There are a ton of them.
Re: Confirmed New Pokémon Discussion
Coulda sworn I read something somewhere in this thread about the two being one being once. Might have gotten it from another site though.
Re: Confirmed New Pokémon Discussion
Has anyone else noticed how four of the Legendaries seem to be based on energy sources? Victini on nuclear power (I think this one is well known), Zekrom on thermal energy, Rashiram on electrical energy and Kyuremu on cold fusion. Hear me out on this one...
Re: Confirmed New Pokémon Discussion
Hiya guys! First post.
While we're (Sorta) on the subject of Sarazon, does anyone else think he might be based on King Ghidorah? The three headed, armless, flying dragon is a fairly uncommon way to draw a hydra, and fits in more with the Kaiju than...
